PraisingHeart -> Severe Intrusive Tinnitus (9/15/2008 10:10:09 PM)

I know that only the people who have this know what it is. If anyone here has it, how long have you had it, and do you know anyone that had it go away? All I have heard is horror stories of people suffering this 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years or more.

I woke up in March with my ears screaming like 2 tea kettles. It has been non stop 24/7 since. I had never heard the name of this affliction, or knew something like this existed. It is so loud, I hear it over everything but running water. I've never had any problems with my hearing, not even infections or earaches when I was a kid.

Because of the insane level of noise, and extreme stress it causes, I haven't had an appetite in 6 months. I have lost over 50 unhealthy pounds and still losing. People are shocked (not in a good way) when they see me, because I'm getting too thin. I have to knock myself out with addictive pills to get any sleep at all, which I have never had to do before.

Doctors are no help. I've been to 12 specialists and they all say the same thing. "There's no cure and nothing we can do about it. If you have it over a year, you'll most likely have it the rest of your life." I don't know how anyone could hear the level of screaming I hear all day, every day, and stay in good health.

If you have a positive outcome tinnitus story, please share.
God Bless, PraisingHeart

Firstly, I don't have 'true' tinnitus. I get it sometimes when I have an infection but when the infection clears up the tinnitus does too.

Your doctors are right in that there is no cure and you will possibly have it for life BUT there may well be things that they (or you) can do to help yourself.

I did a quick search online and found Wikipedia had some useful information ~ including treatment.

There's also a UK site (there's probably a similar one in the US or whatever country you are in, so check it out that gives a bunch of info on treatments ~ and comments on them. That's here. You may want to scroll down that page and look at 'Complementary Therapy for Tinnitus' and 'Sound Therapy'.

Finally, you may also want to check this news article out about a new treatment for tinnitus.

Both the Wikipedia site and the UK Tinnitus site suggest that Gingko Biloba may be helpful to some who suffer from tinnitus.

The UK site does stress that the success of treatment varies from one person to another considerably and it can take a while for people to find out what works for them and what doesn't.

I (used to) have tinnitus. My mother has it so it's probably a genetic predisposition. I found that coming off dairy (especially milk) helped it to either go away or get quieter to a bearable level (so much so that I rarely notice it). That wasn't why I came off dairy, but it was a very welcome
"side-effect"!!

just to let you know, there is hope...not necessarily a cure, but it may be out there, but there are coping techniques. i also woke up, nearly 8 years ago, with a noise that was like a microphone put up against a speaker...couldn't sleep, eat, function etc for quite awhile. dr. put me on an addictive drug to help sleep but i didn't want to stay on it. i began reading and getting material for everywhere. went to dr. after dr. and the most i got from them was "good luck, you'll just have to learn how to live with it" not much help. i got a white noise machine, started to take relaxation courses and listening to wave noises and other relaxing music. i thought i'd never sleep or take a nap again nor function normally or enjoy life, everything was just falling apart. over time it has improved or i've just gotten better at coping. when i'm stressed, it is worse and when it is quite it is much more noticeable. out of all the books i've read the best is The Tinnitus Handbook, a self-help guide by Bill Habets. get is asap and pour through it. try everything, i did. Today, i'm still not my old self. in some ways i'm better/humbled through this. i live a full life, which i thought i'd never do, i enjoy my grandkids, my wife and life. it is still there, but soooooooooooo much better than it was....i'd say it took a few years...sorry, it may be longer yet it may be shorter, to get somewhat of a handle on this. i know that the OHSU (i believe that it is the oregon health....not sure the rest...in portland, oregon) has a program for tinnitus and treating it and they have been very successful...i found them after i got my own program going and they do the same things that i had researched and applied in my own life so i decided not to do it....as i said it is something that you can cope with..some folks better than others...i'm a tad OCD and ADHD (my wife would say much more than a tad) so for my type, i believe it is more of a struggle...my father in law has had it for 30 plus years and it never has bothered him badly...he just takes things more in stride...good luck and i hope some of this helps you

I can relate!

Has anyone told you about lipoflavonoids. They do help. The ringing may not go away entirely (that's what's happened in my case), but you may be able to get some relief, my friend.

Here's what I take:

Well, I have had Tinnitus since 1984 when I blasted a Van Halen album into my ears. I only notice it these days when people mention it or I think of it.

As for advice, try to stay away from places or things that have extremely loud noise.
