I finally got to Meet DeeAnn, and I got to see Diana. I still haven't met Donna. One of these days. Santa introduced me to Sonya; and I saw Daniel and David Bruce Murray, but didn't get to talk to them.

No a, just Sony. Got to have several chats with Sony and a couple with her Mom and sisters. Good, sweet family.

we just finished our 21st straight year at NQC. Sit in 2nd row floor all 6 nights. When you become a permanent member, they just send you a bill and you have to pay B4 Feb. This is the way to get better seating. Someone earlier asked about the Singing Cookes. The more you watch the whole operation of the convention you find out that logic isn't always there (and politics is) as to who sings and who doesn't. The NQC is a privately held corp with a board of Directors. There is a selection committee which operates in secret. If you have favorites, send them to Clarke Beasley the head of the NQC. The more requests they receive, the more they are compelled to add to the list. If you look at your list of performers you will see lots of Greater Vision, Kingdom Heirs, L5, and the Hoppers. They all have representation on the Board of Directors which automatically gets three nights exposure on center stage. I am not saying the above to be critical, just the facts, and the Board can do what they want. Since the NQC is the best game around, you take the best and overlook what you don't like.

Hidee,
I will return again next year if they include The Melody Boys Quartet of Little Rock, AR on the Main Stage once again. They were not invited to perform on the Main Stage this year after being there for many years. Gerald Williams is in the Hall of Fame, has travelled full time in the SGM Quartet World for 59 years, and has always been known for demanding a high level of quality in his Quartet. TMBQ's Business Manager did attend to represent the Quartet this year, and he believes that many people will voice their wishes to Clarke and the Board about including TMBQ next year again on the Main Stage. I hope they will be invited to sing on the Main Stage next year. I truly missed being at NQC this year!

My plans, as of now, is to take a break from NQC next year. I am planning several other Southern Gospel themed trips for 2009.

I emailed NQC staff about when I could purchase next year's tickets. They said this week as soon as they get their power restored. They were victims of IKE as it went through that area.

We have Mon - Wed season tickets, but changed Wed seat for next year so we already have ours, plus we purchased tickets for Thursday night.

Re: the Melody Boys from Little Rock: I was told last year that if a quartet has high turn-over within the year, they are told they can't perform on the main stage. What exactly "high turnover" is is unclear to me, however Kerry Beatty from PSQ told me that last year. I suspect that High turn-over means at least two members , as many groups lose one during a year. The Melody Boys have had a high turn-over since their two mainstays left about 4 years ago. This could be the reason.

Hidee Upnorthguy,
I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my post. That is often the first reason that someone offers. However, if it is the reason - all groups are not being held to the same standard. I believe Ed O'Neil's Dixie Melody Boys was a completely different group (except for Ed, of course) from the 2007 to the 2008 NQC. (Nothing against Ed and DMB - I usually enjoy them!) Other groups that were on the Main Stage also had several changes.
Caleb Matheny has been with Gerald for almost three years. Terry had been with him for two years (before he left this August - long after the decision was made not to include TMBQ this year). Scott, the previous tenor, was the only change before the decision was made about the final line up. Therefore, there was only one change when the decision was made. Also, once again, if we really started listing all the changes in all the groups on the Main Stage - I just do not think that "rule" is the reason.

If I had to guess, I guess the Board just thinks the Melody Boys wouldn't draw as many people as one of the groups they added.

I still think they should have a classics session, perhaps a 2-hour mainstage set with a bunch of the classic groups that aren't otherwise on mainstage, starting at 4 instead of 6 one evening.

Hidee Daniel,
Thank you for your reply. Once again, I believe The Melody Boys Quartet tour more nationally than several of the groups on the Main Stage, and they consistently "draw" more than some of the groups that were on the Main stage. I would love for there to be a way to see how much they tour and how many they "draw" as compared to many of the other groups that were once again invited to the Main Stage.
I hate to sound bitter and snobbish; however, unless there is true quality issue, which there is NOT with TMBQ, a group should not be "demoted" to any type of "preconcert" Main Stage appearance. Yes, TMBQ is a "classic, legendary Quartet"; however, they are also producing quality fresh Music that completely fits the traditional Quartet style...with modern harmony, beautiful chords, and absolutely no stacks. (Listen to the new project - "Destination Heaven"!)
I really do not intend to be argumentative, and I can admit that I am prejudiced toward TMBQ. However, I would really like to know why they were not invited to perform on the Main Stage. I am sorry, but none of the explanations I have heard "hold water" in my opinion.

Another group that was there but was not on main stage or any showcases was Chuck Wagon Gang. The've been singing over 75 years and were not recognized. They, certainly should have had a slot on the main stage also.

While not trying to sound unduly critical, I thought certain "classic" quartet sets lacked the charisma and appeal that they had last year over this weekend. If groups don't perform at the same caliber they used to, I could justify some decisions by the Board to cut back on them - that's just business.

That said, I'm not at all saying particular groups mentioned above should be axed, I'm just saying I can see the Board's rationale in cutting back even some long-standing groups from mainstage depending on the group's current performance level. Just because someone has a name with history behind it doesn't give them automatic talent and stage appeal. Just a thought for whatever its worth, not pinpointing anyone, just making an overall observation.

I've been a permanent seat holder for just 2 or 3 years now and we already had great (IMO) seats this year! They were essentially floor tickets, but just elevated enough so that you didn't have to look around the person in front of you. Considering there were 4 of us in a row, we were ecstatic!

I'm definitely not planning to let such great seats get away by not going next year!

The truth is the National Quartet Convention is a Corporation. It is a business with a board of directors. They can invite or not invite any group they want to. All we as attendees can do is go and support them or stay home. As a business I am sure they try to make the decisions that will be the most profitable for the business.

Hidee Youngartist,
I appreciate your reply. I fully realize that you stated several times in your post that you were not "pinpointing anyone", and I so appreciate that fact. However, I know many people on this Board are not familar with The Melody Boys Quartet; therefore, I simply want to "re-emphasize" that quality is NOT an issue with TMBQ. Visit their website and listen to the songs (songs from the new project should be up by this weekend). They are and always have been a quality Quartet - Gerald Williams would allow nothing else! I'm not saying they should be there because Gerald is in his 59th year of travelling full time in the Quartet World and because he is in the Hall of Fame. I am saying they should be there because they present quality traditional Quartet Music at its best. I fully realize traditional Quartet Music is not everyone's favorite!
Just as it does not give them automatic talent or stage appeal because they have a "history", it does not mean they do not possess these qualities because they do have a long rich history. I simply ask the "powers that be" listen to the current Music they are producing.

Edit added: I fully realize the NQC is a private coorporation and can invite anyone they care to invite. I am simply trying to understand a specific situation.

Gayla I admire your loyalty to TMBQ. I also understand your frustration. However, I think you are looking for answers in the wrong place. None of us have them. You need to express your concerns to the NQC.

As an example, simplified I admit, the stores in my area stopped carrying my favorite After Shave. I can post about it on here all day long and they still will not stock the product. But, if enough people complain to the stores they just might.

What I am suggesting is you get like minded people to join you an dpetition the NQC to put the back on main stage and if enough of you do they may just reconsider.

Thanks for your thought-out responses, Gayla and Qtman. They are both logical and noteworthy.

Jeff & Sheri Easter were almost absent for last year's NQC until enough fans made a petition to get the Board to pay them enough to keep them there. It works.

Maybe one thing we as fans could do is start an e-mail campaign to the NQC asking that they include as many groups as possible. When I attend for the first time next year, I would like to see every group I have ever heard of (at least those that are still around and performing) perform at least at a showcase if not on the main stage.

As far as posting suggestions and preferences on here not making a difference, it just might actually make a difference. I know of at least two NQC board members who lurk on here frequently. I'm sure they see many of the comments that are made and probably pass them on to the others.

Jeff,
This year, every group in attendance that had a booth also had an opportunity to perform on a showcase.

You won't hear every group you've ever heard of, but you should be able to hear every group that is there...if you can be in a couple of places at once! :o)
