So what type of paint do you use and why?? I will be painting (finely!) this week--[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

Whatever you do, don't buy the cheapest brand. I speak from experience here. [8D]

I liked American Tradition from Lowe's, but they call it something else now.

The type of paint (latex or oil) as well as the finish (flat, egg shell, semigloss, etc.) will depend on what was used previously, your decor, uses, and family life style. For brand of paint, I never buy from the big box stores. I buy Duron/Sherwin Wiliams or Porter. Mostly because of quality and poor touch up quality, but also because of price. I can get better prices from my regular suppliers than I can at blowes or home destruction.

It's good to be frugal but I agree that paint is one of the things that you buy the best, not the cheapest. With cheap paint you have to give it 5 coats instead of 2 coats. What you save in money you give up in time, and then you'll be mad at yourself for it later. Buy good quality stuff.

We used Dunn Edwards for the oustide because of weather, sun, etc. For the inside I have good luck with Lowe's paints. I take them something I want them to match and it's always come out good. I use different finishes for the bathrooms and kitchen.

First of all, I buy the trim that has already been primed. So once up, we sand and spray all of the trim. Then that's done, finished. Now for the walls... have 3 guys who do nothing but tape up the trim while you start spraying primer. It'll take them about 10 min to do one room, then you can start and they should be able to stay ahead of you. Once all is primed and dry, sand the walls. Then spray first coat, sand again, then spray final coat. It will take you about 15 min to an hour to sand all of the walls between each coat, but that's the only... ONLY way to get a nice smooth professional paint job.
This process with 4 guys, including waiting for 24 hours for the paint to dry, takes us 3 to 4 days.

At work We have been painting new offices for the past two months. The walls are drywall with at least one coat of paint that was previously on it.

We are painting all white for the color scheme. We are using Kilz2 latex for the primer, and then two coats of Glidden latex White Eggshell finish. So all together we are putting three coats of paint on each wall. Thank God we don't have ceilings to do. Our ceilings are all ceiling tile.

The chair rails, shoe molding, window framing and doors, and door frames are being painted with Glidden oil alklyd base, gloss white.

The Oil is a lot harder to work with as it sets up too fast when you have a fan on to blow away the fumes. We are using the Glidden oil Primer as well.

I just tried the Glidden latex primer, (Gripper), as we ran out of Kilzi2 and just happened to have some in the shop. The Glidden Gripper Primer covers just about the same as the Kilz2, but it stinks to the high heavens as it is drying. The Kilz2 has a much less order as it drys.

I don't know. My dad worked for SWP for years and he gets the most expensive stuff he can find for some reason. I don't want to have to do five coats but at the same time, 1. I have kids and it's going to take constant touch ups anyway and 2. I get bored quickly and I'll want to redo it soon anyway. So I can't see buying the "good" stuff - mid-grade at best is what works for me.

Here is a painting tip that has saved us alot of money. Have your paint color in mind before you buy the primer. For primer we use the Premium Kilz and we have them tint the primer nearly the same color as the color of the paint. Ask them to make the color of the primer a shade off, this will help you know where you have missed a spot or two. This tip has saved us so much paint and has eliminated any possibility of a second coat in most cases.

well yesterday we rented a sprayer and primed all the drywall---I think I will prime the one red wall with tinted primer--son is using black so his will be tinted also---our woold work in stained and will go up later----I want to do a faux finish in the great room and dnning room---looks like I might be able to get Sherwin Williams paint for 24 dollars a gallon--not bad --now I must MUST decide on colors!! Never been scared to paaint or pick colors until now!![8D]

Do you have a couch or area rug that is going in this room? or drapes. If you have a starting point then it is easier to pick colors. You don't have to be matchy matchy but a starting color can lead the way to wall color and trim color.

Another hint. Walk through Lowes or Home Depot. They have color combinations already up on the walls, in the kitchen and bathroom department. We chose our kitchen color this way, because it looked so pretty in HD.

Be careful picking out colors. The lights in the store are usually different and much brighter then your house lights. Try getting some paint chips from SW and stick them on your walls. Check them in the daylight, as well as the evening with the lights on. The lights play tricks on you with the color. Your mood also depends on what color you pick.

The wife and I thought we had a color all picked out and then we didn't like it anymore on the wall and went with a totally different color all together.

We finally went with a light ivory for our living room and dinning room. We have an older house with lots of dark woodwork and china cabnets and window seat, and two parlor doors in the living room. The light ivory really brought out the color of the woodwork. The color sceme came out beautiful. The rooms look very stately. The color itself is very warm and soothing. It's easy to relax with it. So take your time picking out your color. Also go to the SW website and use their color simulator. This will give you an idea of what colors match.

The paint I buy depends on where it's going and what properties I need from it-and how easy it is and what it looks like. I just repainted my office--following a flood due to blocked A/C drain that ruined the carpeting...so I had to redo the floors...so while the floors were out, repainted the walls with something called "Belagio Faux" Paint on a flat base color than go over with a tinted glaze, then smear out the little "globules" in the tint. It was incredibly easy and looks great. Will use the same thing in different colors in the other room affected by the flood before putting in the new flooring.
