No, I just watched the video; it's fairly obvious what they were reacting to.

How did you discern what exactly they were reacting to without psychic powers? What was your cue?

And are you denying that people laugh and shout and clap at Obama speeches, or that "lipstick on a pig" is a punchline?

The "lipstick issue" is a tempest in a teapot.

The "lipstick on a pig" analogy is a time worn one that has been around for years. McCain used it in a campaign speech months ago. The "pit bull...lipstick" line was a good applause line, well delivered. But it fairly invites the use of the old "lipstick...pig" line in rebuttal. Anybody who is seriously offended by what Obama said should join the ranks of the chronically offended and stay away from politics.

I favor McCain-Palin. I like their stand on the issues better than Obama-Biden. I have more respect for the character of McCain-Palin than for the character of Obama-Biden. But I have a considerable amount of respect for Joe Biden. I mention him not to slight Obama, but simply because he's been in the public eye longer.

This election doesn't have to be one about ultimate good versus ultimate evil. No matter who wins, the US will remain a country with serious problems that can't be solved overnight. And the US will still be, in many ways, the last best hope of mankind. And the US will remain a country that, when it does stupid things, causes more harm to the world than a country like Lichtenstein does.

Thanks for the post, Strider. I think you summed it up wisely, except for the part about respecting Biden... I can't ride that trolly! Like an old pastor of mine says, "That dawg don't hunt"

Btw, here's the latest poll on the Obama's Pig Lipstick issue.

http://www.nydailynews.com/nydn/poll.do?pollCmsUniqueId=obamas_remark&pollTitle=Obama%

So i guess the majority are the sensitive GOP types right Sweedish? IN NEW YORK?????

Yep. And isnt it funny that the WHOLE ENTIRE AUDIENCE behind Obama when he made that comment knew what he meant?

Of course hes gonna deny it now. Does anyone really think a man like him is really gonna come out and say 'yes i did call her a pig'?
Nope. Hes gonna deny. Deny. Deny.
Thats what his whole party is based on and hes just following suit.

I almost forgot. Rush had a good one today about the Democrats:

"They'll tax the pig, they'll tax the lipstick, and then they'll say its ok to marry the pig!"

I almost had to pull over I was laughing so hard.

Hmmm why would you say that Rush was referring to homosexuals as pigs?

Why would you say Obama was referring to Sarah Palin?

Same principle. You interpret what Obama said in a way as to make it sound sexist. I applied the same logic to what Rush said to make it sound homophobic.

Dont start changing this around now. lol
You got offended because you interpreted it the way you wanted too, just like you were saying at the beginning of this thread.
Rush didnt say homosexuals. You just think thats what he meant right? So now you maybe understand why most people are thinking Obama said what he said as a direct insult to Palin. Which he was.

I saw that at the time. IIRC, he responds to the woman's question, dealing with the issue itself.

Except for a small chuckle, McCain neither reinforces nor admonishes the woman's characterization of Hillary. There are plenty of times when he's referred to Hillary as "my colleague in the Senate". I don't remember if he said that in this instance or not. In any event, only the chronically offended would take offense at the manner of McCain's response.

And that has nothing to do with the underlying issue. IIRC, it was Hillary's health care plan. Some people are for that. Others are against it. That's not offensive.

Your characterization of McCain as a hypocrite is not supported by the video you present.

I'm a McCain-Palin supporter. I love Sarah Palin. But I don't think this remark was directed at her and I think the McCain campaign is sort of clutching at straws here. I agree with one of the above posts that say if anything, Obama's calling McCain a pig and Sarah is the lipstick. In saying that, I do think the audience immediately thought it was a reference to Palin and I bet as soon as Obama said it he realised it sounded that way and immediately regretted it. But I don't think it was meant in that way. The McCain campaign is getting pretty dirty with their smear tactics and I really wish they would stop. McCain needs to be showing dignity. He needs to show that he can rise above the dirty smear campaigns previously used by Republican candidates. On Bill O'Reilly, Dick Morris said Sarah Palin should come out and publicly say that she didn't take the remark as an insult at her. That would really show her dignity.

I can no longer keep quiet... I am a born-again Christian... who also happens to be a lifelong Democrat and Obama supporter. How dare any of you question my morals, my motives, and my heart! Especially those of you with Scripture verses tagged to the bottom of your notes. What we have here is the Karl-Rovian style of politics that existed in 2004 and it is wrong, regardless of which party is responsible for it. IF - and I say if - Obama deliberately used the phrase as a slam to Palin, he owes her an apology. But, the McCain campaign also owes Obama apologies for many of the untruths they are saying about him. If Obama is indeed the devil that some of you portray him to be, then the TRUTH should be enough to defeat him.... Can we not pray together that we can have political discussions based on truth, the issues, and that we can learn about the character of the individuals who are asking to lead us. Would either of them be worse than the last 8 years? AND, that is all I have to say. REMEMBER, I am a grandmother of five when you decide to slam my character and morals.

It's an old phrase. Obama used it in speeches before Palin was a blip on the political radar.

McCain used it.

Cheney used it.

NPR has a whole string of politicans, from both parties, using it.

quote:

Who would have thought a Republican campaign would intentionally play the victim?

Anybody who's been watching how they've been using Palin's gender (among other things) to play that card.*

I'm glad Obama's ignoring it; it's silly, and doesn't deserve attention. He is still talking about his plans. I still have yet to hear a word from Palin (or McCain, recently) about what they actually plan to DO, if elected.

*For example, in a March interview with Newsweek Palin complained that Hillary Clinton does women a disservice by whining about excess criticism directed towards women in politics (you can easily find the footage).

But now that she's the one people are turning an eye to, the GOP asks the media to show "deference," and accuses them of being too harsh.

i haven't seen this brought up, i don't doubt you, do you have links to articles about the speeches, etc?

i still don't see any responses to my comments and examples of obama using condescending metaphors against hillary: kitchen sink, 'periodically feeling down', claws out, etc ...

I think people need to grow up and at like adults. Stop turning an innocent statement into something it is not.

You who are against it are the pot calling the kettle black.

Act like adults and represent your party with pride not sink to the level of accusing scum suckers. Be respectable.

It applies to both party lines.
