The purpose of this thread is to contribute to and contemplate what a church is- what ingredients of it are absolutely necessary, and what aspects of it are 'just because they can be there'.
For some reason, I get to start the list off, so part of a Christian church- the major and most necessary part, is the assembly of believers for the edification and building up (maybe that's a repeat of the same notion) of one another.
At the end of each submission, simply just restate your contribution to this list of construction 'material'.

Thank you, Liveloved. This is the body of Christ, a body of born again believers (church...no matter denomination or non).
The body of Christ (church) welcomes skeptics, seekers and sinners into their assembly (time of worship) or gathering together.

Acts 2:42, right after the birth of the church, states, "And they continued steadfastly in the apostles doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread and in prayers."
So--sound teaching; fellowship; praying--I've heard some say that "breaking of bread" has to be with practical sharing of necessities, as in "they had all things in common", and others that it referred to the beginning of the ordinance of communion, still others, that it refers to the breaking of bread for the Sabbath.

Thanks for the responses so far.
Necessary ingredients at this time are...
an assembly of believers
who confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God;
let's add on that unite together for worship of the Triune God;
and in fellowship and the spurring of one another on towards love and good deeds;
and in prayer;
and in remembrance of God's provision through sharing of the sacrament of communion;
and welcomes skeptics, seekers and sinners into their assembly;
of which those with the gift of teaching would teach;
and also that others with other gifts might benefit in the sharing of them with others, and benefit those others as well.
So there's room in there for teachers, helpers... all the good gifts of the Spirit.
A pastor can be considered a teacher, but was it Pastor Peter, a disciple appointed by Christ. Anyone have anything from the Word that sets up a pastor or senior minister?

Thanks for the additional input- very good.
Creating a virtual church is what this is starting to become, and I'm thinking there's more of a reason for everyone to consider their own church and their individual role in it for the building up of the kingdom.

Ok, Bible genuises, did Christ build the church on Peter, while at the same time taking the cornerstone position, or was it built solely on Christ, with Peter somewhere in the mix?
I was thinking of Christ's renaming of Cephas, and the reasoning for giving him his new name when I typed the subject line, yet I know there's specific reference to the cornerstone position of a structure- that without a strong cornerstone the whole thing can topple.
After some thought on the above, I'd just as well let this be a reflection of the early church for comparing to today's church- and future ingredient listing cease.

Matthew 16:18
And I tell you, you are Peter [Greek, Petros--a large piece of rock], and on this rock [Greek, petra--a huge rock like Gibraltar] I will build My church, and the gates of Hades (the powers of the infernal region) shall not overpower it [or be strong to its detriment or hold out against it].
There is a not so big rock and a Big Rock in this passage. That makes two rocks, and Peter is not the Big Rock.
The simple answer is that Peter is one of the Apostles who make up the foundation and Jesus is The Rock, The Cornerstone.
This is, of course, not an interpretation that all agree with, and that is putting it mildly.

Healing for the church specifically. Man people who have the gift of healing give it to anyone and then the church misses out. Christians should have more access to that healing, yet it is often given to the dogs over and above the people of God. This annoys me. Yes grace is free to all, but Christ is not a doormat, not just someone to use up.

I'm not sure what you are saying? But throughout scripture, healing (such as physical healing) was done so that people would see, know and believe in Jesus. . . it was a work done to bring about belief. Believers already know healing because they have Jesus. The physical healing becomes irrelevant because their eyes are fixed on Him. Bless ya, LL

How many people in the church do not get healing? How man who have no interest in the church get healing? This is what I mean. Jesus just gets used up and His people are not always healed. I don't think people are necessarily drawn into the church because of their healing. I know what I am saying but am not sure I am making any sense to another ear.

I dont understand why you would think Christians dont have as much access to healing.
More than that why do you think a Christian deserves healing more than anyone else.
Would it be easier for you to watch someone suffer or be sick if they didnt know the Lord
I would pray for someone who didnt know the Lord to be healed ,the same as I would pray for someone who did know the Lord.
As a Christian we should rejoice and have joy anytime someone receives healing.
With ALL Praise and Glory and Honor being given to the Lord

The Church is an organism not an organization. It is made up of individual born again believers all over the world. That is why Jesus said,
"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father." John 14:12
Jesus does "greater works" now because He indwells believers all over the world. Through us, He is able to reach more people than He could when He walked the earth prior to His death, burial and resurrection. The Church is not were we congregate. The Church is who we are, the Body of Christ.
