I just came across this thread. I would have to agree. Out here in the Midwest most Church activities focus around eating--and the food they serve is unhealthy.

So, what is it you're agreeing with? That churches contribute to the problem or that it's the responsibility of the individual?

Uhh, no. The church is not responsible for my physical health and dietary habits.

Yes, we're responsible for the choices we make, but at the same time, there's no reason for the church to exacerbate the situation. I may be free to drink beer, but cracking open a 6-pack in front of an AA meeting would be wrong, wouldn't it? -Dan.

How can you blame the church for what is a personal responsibility. Nobody is forcing the food down your throat. We love to blame everything and everyone for our problems.

I totally agree. Weight loss and diet is a personal thing. I'm not even really sure how the Church even contributes to that at all.

I'm a firm believer in personal responsibility and, to be honest, if you are a reasonably educated and informed American...you already know that high-fructose corn syrup and trans-fats are killers. If you continue to consume them on a regular basis you are choosing to value your instant gratification over taking care of the body God gave you. actually i don't think everyone understands the dangers of trans fats and h fructose corn syrup, and one can eat like a bird and get tons of corn sweetener just by drinking sweetened beverages. as for christians, what does the bible say about exercise and its importance and defiling our bodies by what we eat?

Doctors are finally admitting that sugar is just destroying people's brains and bodies. Well people have been saying it for a long time but now It's really coming out how much it's aging and killing peoples bodies.

While the church is not entirely to blame for the obesity rates among conservative Christians, they don't help the situation by offering just the unhealthy foods at their potlucks. I attended an Easter potluck last year. The sight of it just turned my stomach. The serving table was piled high with processed bread, butter and salt cured ham. There were casserole dishes full of candied vegetables, butter smothered vegetables and icky sugary dishes. My husband and I ended up walking out and eating someplace else.

Come on now, it takes more than one or two fellowship meals a month to become overweight. I would imagine those who eat way too much at these meals also do the same thing at home and when they go out to eat. Also if it's a potluck dinner then people can bring whatever they want. The churches I've been a member of over the years always had a variety of foods from healthy to heavenly. If your church doesn't have healthy options and it bothers you then be the one to provide something healthy. That's what I do.
