In another thread about things to ask on a first date someone mentioned imagining what he/she would look like when older and then another mentioned meeting and getting to know the parents of someone in order to get a good glimps of what he/she will look, act and be like when older. If this is true I thought it would be fun to share how we see our parents, whether we see ourselves looking and acting like them when we get older, and how could we best sell ourselves, using our parents, to a potential mate. For example.........my mother, at 65, is very active. She still builds fences, works in her garden, paints the house, and even put a roof(did the work herself) on her house last summer. She is always doing this or that and is far from a couch potatoe. I see my mother as a very strong woman who is not even close to slowing down. I am very similar to her now as far as always being active so I imagine I will be the same at her age..... I would make a good wife, based on my mother, because I am full of energy and am not the type to sit twiddling my thumbs.

So when a man meets your mother would you use your differences as a selling point? My mother and I are very different in many ways but the things which are a positive for her are what I think I would use as a selling point......... My mother looks very young for her age.........she has hardly any wrinkles and her hair is still full of body and color....... So if a man imagines me at 65 having the same complexion as my mother that would be a very positive thing......... My mom has a very beautiful face.

My mother exhibited the grace and elegance of the old hollywood movie stars - and always looked like one too. She gave me my cheekbones and skin (for which I am extremely thankful!). She passed along her classic taste in everything. I can't answer much more right now.

So when a man meets your mother would you use your differences as a selling point? Wow! I immediately got my knickers in a knot when I read this, so.....deep breath................................................................... I am not selling anything! If I ever get married again, it will be because there is #1 a man out there that God has chosen for me, and #2 he has fallen in love with who I am. All of me, my good qualities and my flaws. My mother does not figure in at all! The only way I will marry him is if he can't live without me and I cannot imagine living without him. Honestly if he is looking for selling points, I have one thing to say...NEXT!!! Edited : In the words of Gilda Radner.............Never Mind!

how about the grandparents? that's who I take after - have been told I'm the spitting image of my grandmother pictured here. she lived to be 88 and died in her sleep - still living alone and driving! Mom gave me grace and elegance - my grandmother (along with dad) gave me my independent spirit - and my paternal grandfather gave me my passion for soccer. I'm the female version of my father - that is not a good thing.

Yes grandparents are fine as well. Actually please feel free using aunts and uncles.........the point was to share about older family members in our lives, who when meet, would give a glimpse of what we might be like at that age. On a side note it is really strange seeing my mom on here........I read the post, forgetting I wrote them, instead thinking my mom is talking to me.........weird.... LOLOLOL

Still the words "selling points" ... But no matter, that's just me. LOL I probably used the words because I personally think using our parents as a deciding factor in whether someone is date worthy or not is silly.....it reminds me of the attitude, which some have, that finding a mate is like buying a car.........better look at the older models first to see how well they held up against time before buying the newer one.........thus the words selling point LOL

How am I like my parents? Ummm.....Uhhhh.....can I pass? I tried thinking of anything and about all I could come up with is my dad is tall too and my mom likes the Beatles too. That's about all I've got. With the exception of one of my brothers, I am very unlike the rest of my family.

Well, let's see. My mother is 80 years old, have been married for 63 years to one man, and have given birth to 13 and raised children. At 80, she's still pretty agile, though she was never active like me. She's very smart, though, more life smart, than academically smart. She's the best cook in the world....bar none. If I'm ever half the woman that she is, I'll be a pretty good catch! Edit: I have 10 sisters, and all of them ended up looking like my mom as soon as they got married....meaning, they all gained weight like she did. I somehow broke the mold because I'm so active, and I doubt I'd look like her. However, at 80, she's still glowing and her true inner beauty still makes her radiant.

People age. Most people put on weight as they age. Some have their teeth go bad. Others can't perform sexually anymore. Dementia sets in. Part of the thrill of romance is the unknown future you want to share with someone who has become inbedded in your heart. If your wedding vows need to state that you will love and honor as long as your spouse does not gain a lot of weight, never gets sick, hair does not fall out, can perform in the bedroom at 60 as well as he/she did at 25, or DOES NOT LOOK LIKE HER MOTHER, well, you have no more business getting married than a brick does. Shallow is as shallow does.

I thought my hubby was gorgious when we were dating, I thought he was gorgious 80 lbs and 20 years later. Even when he was in his hospital bed dying I treated him as though he was the most incredibly good looking man in the world, because in my heart he was. The smile on his face when I walked into his room and said Hi good looking, with his hair falling out from Chemo and drooling from paralysis, was worth it every time. Sorry Joy, He asked. Don't be sorry Nadine.......I happen to agree with you........I think it is sad more for those people then those they reject........Thank you for sharing how you saw your husband........it is touching.

I frankly can't believe how often this topic pops up in Singles. There seem to be some people around here who are seriously hung up on what their spouse is going to look like when they're 70. WHO CARES? Do you honestly think you're going to look the same then, or even 10 years from now? And do you honestly want your future spouse to look at your mother or father and decide, based on their looks, whether to marry you? Come on.

Stellaluna what I find interesting is how often topics, which aren't really intended to be about looks alone, because such......... The thread was intended to be humorous and a way for us to brag on our parents or older relatives.........if you notice in the OP the question also included act and be like......... quote:
getting to know the parents of someone in order to get a good glimpse of what he/she will look, act and be like when older. The example I gave had nothing to do with what my mother looks like but her activities level and the things she still loves to do. I will introduce a potential husband to my mother because who I am is largely based on who she has become. quote:
So if anyone were to meet my parents after meeting me they would be like, 'Ahh...now I see where she gets it from.' You know? It helps open the door to understanding and grace. Good point Tink.........We all have parts of our parents in us whether we like to admit it or not.......LOL As for the physical.......Someone who cares so much about someone physical appearance, that he would want to meet their parents before deciding if he/she is "good" enough for them, isn't good enough for me to introduce to my familyLOL
