My brother and his family moved to Houston recently. SIL says that she is going crazy because the kids haven't been to school since the Thursday before Ike hit.

That's great Tinkerbell!

Praying for the needs mentioned.

Garsy, I think it would be nice to pass the artwork on.

I got a pile of shirts for my son at a garage sale this afternoon, for 25 cents each. I love garage sales!

Hey everyone!

they were just like "normal" kids, excited and happy to be there. Second brag, my girls usually don't talk much, even at home. They have been so excited about this and learning about the dino's that they can't stop talking about it.

Oh Kim, that made me so happy! You may remember I'm a step mom to a downs boy, I basically raised him as his mom would go months without getting him, and those things just touch our hearts. I'm very glad for you.

Roberta, I imagine the stress of just moving and then being in the center of a hurricane must be pretty overwhelming for the family!

Tink, would you send me a PM with the link? :)

Aryn is on a roll lately!

Today she won a Apple Baking contest at a local Johnny Appleseed festival! She made a Caramel Apple Cheesecake and was one of three in the 5 to 13 year old category. She was so excited! They announced the honorable mention and it wasn't her. They announced the 2nd place winner and it wasn't her. At this point she was bouncing in her seat she was so excited! She won a gift basket full of goodies and a family pack of tickets to the Zoo. She may also have her recipe printed in the local newspaper! I'm going to blog about this tomorrow!

But now with all the busyness and excitement of the day, she is not feeling very well at all. Stomach ache big time and a slight fever.

This festival is a big festival/craft show/civil war encampment reenactment/pioneer days/farmers market/antique show. It's huge and so much fun! We go every year! It's the only festival that my husband actually enjoys!

All of us are just exhausted!

Blessings,

Garsy

Yes it was! My SIL and the kids actually moved there late July and my brother joined them on 9/09 when he started his new job there. Their oldest came back here for college on 9/10.

They felt very blessed not to have any humans harmed in their area, but the property damage has been pretty high. They are in the north west area of Houston. SIL said that there is talk of sending kids from Galveston to their schools because Galveston is pretty much gone. In their area of Houston, schools could reopen as early as Tuesday.

Since I still have flight benefits from my ex, I'm considering flying down there to help out with the clean-up. Just have to get over that fear of flying first.

Oh Robertta, a couple of clonozopam or xanax and you will be just fine. Especially since you know you will be going for a good reason.

WTG Aryn! That is exciting! (And sounds delicious! I loves me some cheesecake.)

Dana was accepted into the Gifted and Talented Program this year. I haven't sent in her signed permission slip yet, I've got an email in to the coordinator with some questions about it first.

Jacob (4 yo) has expressed many times that he wants to know how to read, so Dana sat down with him at the chalkboard last night and taught him letters A thru F. He's so tickled. Nathan also tried to teach him a "science lesson" but that didn't go too well. He definitely doesn't have the patience with little ones that Dana does.

I got my etsy shop set up last night! Right now I have four pieces up for sale, I'll probably be working on another one today. I just need to figure out which Scripture I want to put on this one. I also got the big piece finished that I was working on for a friend of hubby's who got married recently. It has a poem that I woodburned onto it, so it took a while. I'm really pleased with the way it turned out, I hope he and his wife like it.

Kathy (or anyone), I was trying to upload a new avatar pic last night and I kept having to shrink it to get it to upload. By the time it finally would upload, it was so small you couldn't even see it. (Seriously, it was like a half inch tall and wide.) Any ideas how to fix that? Also, I read over the TOS and can't figure out if it's ok for me to post a link to my etsy account in my signature or not. Do you know if that's allowed? Thanks!

Can't believe it's almost October! We're going to be talking about Christmas trees before you know it.

Yes, you can not only adjust the size but the pixels. So if you decrease that, like by using less color (64 instead of 128 for instance) you can get it to fit. Once I get the size I want I start to decrease the pixels.

Yes, that is allowed. TOS is unsolicited advertising. You cannot start a thread but you can put it in your sig. Also, if someone were to ask you about it you could link to it then too.

Thanks Kath! When hubby gets home with his zip drive (my pics are saved on there) I'll see if I can get it figured out. And I've added my siggy link.

I guess the G/T thing ended up being a moot point. The email didn't go thru, and then Dana came home today chattering about how much fun she had in G/T today. She said they'll meet one day a week, the only classtime she'll miss is pullout (which is either computer class, or class counseling) and about five minutes of math. As far as she can tell, only one grade meets at a time, it was her and four or five other girls. So that all sounds good! I'm glad she enjoyed it.

Yay for Aryn!

Danas_mom, that's so cool that Dana is teaching Jacob how to read!

N is still getting into the routine. He had to stay after school yesterday to do work, but he was mad because he had to miss reading out loud time to do work. His teacher had told him he'd have to stay after school, but that he wouldn't have to miss recess. So he thought he wouldn't have to miss the reading time, and felt misled. He needs to learn to be flexible, and teacher needs to learn that he'll function best when he knows exactly what is expected of him.

The middle schoolers play at the HS game tomorrow night. The band that is. So that should be fun for them. They do a half time show.

It's raining!!! I know that most here are probably sick of the rain but we've been in a drought. I'll need to leave a little earlier to drop off my college student. My youngest is out of school today because of a teacher conference.

My dh had downloaded two slide shows of some of the damage in the Houston area from the hurricane. Wow! It is amazing what the news has not covered...there is so much destruction. I am truly thankful for the answered prayers that protected my sister and bil, their home and work.

It's been a busy week around here, for the kids anyway.
Ty had 4 HOURS of homework last night. Good grief! He had something in every class including his theatre class!
Aryn ran for student council this past week and got the position of class representative for her class yesterday! This means every other Tuesday morning she has to be to school early for a student council meetings. She also joined choir so every Wednesday morning she also has to be at school early. Thankfully for choir I was able to arrange a car pool with a couple other 5th graders and I only have to drive every 3 weeks. Still working on a carpool thing for student council but I have to figure out whose for sure on it.
Ethan is working super hard in school and is in the middle of popcorn sales right now. We have a popcorn booth tomorrow morning at a nearby grocery store.
Zoe is doing much better and her smile proves it! She can't wait for our regular art teacher to return to school. I can't either!

I'm off to school today as it's the first day of literacy packs.

Must run to type a short note that goes in all the bags the first week.

Blessings,

Garsy

Wow, that is great.

BTW, I've been meaning to tell you that I LOVE how you use Thing 1 & 2.

My DeeDee used to be convinced that she had to be called DeeDee on line when she gets there.

Went to the funeral home for Lane. Well, for my friend's sake. I felt awful. She seemed all alone. And, her DH told me that she was looking for folks from work and they hadn't been in yet and I talked to some this morning - they didn't go last night either, one was 'too tired to get dressed' ERRR

It is just that Lane was in here for their Wednesday Prayer Lunch. His sister, our co-worker, missed work to take him for treatments. She buys from our kids, she watches out when folks are laying down sick in the lounge. She is good folk KWIM? Burns my toast to hear that folks had better things to do, like sleep.

They said that the 12yo doesn't get the finality yet. So young for such a loss.

How true. And it may take a LONG time. I'm praying that once all this settles and all the help and people have gone away, that someone is there for this child when she finally releases all that is building inside.

Brian was sick again last night - very similar to the time that landed him in the hospital in June, but not nearly as bad. His blood pressure stayed consistent and normal and the cramping was not as severe. He did have a fever this time around tho and after that broke and rose again and broke again, he was fine. I was up half the night, but he was fine. I simply can't sleep when I know someone in my house is sick, especially if I share a bed with them and have to lay next to a icky sweatyiness.

He's fine now - typical.

Tomorrow Brian has carpool - taking Aryn and a neighbor boy into school for their student council meeting. Then Wednesday I have carpool taking Aryn and 2 OTHER neighborhood kids in for 5th grade choir.

Today it's laundry as I try to finish up some scrapbooking projects I'm working on.

Blessings,

Garsy

Now that you used that word - I realize that someone else on here used the same word to describe one of the same two people... just about two weeks ago.

And, I have to share this, just to get it out of my system...My sil & nieces were talking about a young man I know. (they didn't know I know him) His mom homeschooled him in elem because he was being picked on by his peers and because the school 'didn't know what to do with him' behavior-wise. He has been in trouble in our public high school and they were telling me stories. All sounded in-character for him. I can't peg what is 'off' about him. He is forthright and speaks in short sentences. He doesn't seem to like change so he didn't like leaving places. I remember him coming up to me. "I know you. I know you from the library. Where is your son? I remember him. I haven't seen him at school. Where has he been? Where is your daughter?" And hardly a second to answer him. (he is a year younger than BigBee) So, anyhow, my niece proceded to talk about how he is a genius at math and the other said he is like one of those 'idiot-savants'. The other said 'autistic and then a light bulb went off and I speculated that he may have Ausbergers. At this point, I'm thinking they are a bit insensitive and venting frustration about seeing him in every class. To a point, that is fine and no different than what I am doing here.

But, when I said Ausbergers, which I know very little about so I was just talking, they both started refering to him as a 'burger-boy'

My sil did nothing to stop them. And, well, they are in high school, they know better. It must be ok to call less than normal kids names. Makes me wonder what they say about my dancing daughter and studious son when they are around their dinner table. And the family wonders why I don't like being around some folks.

They should know better. And it's a real shame that school didn't recognize Aspergers, and that you, a lay person, knew what it probably is. Something similar happened with my dad, he went to the dr with sores in his mouth and they didn't know what it was, so he had to go to a different dr to get a diagnosis. As mom described it to me, I said it sounds like thrush. She was shocked becasue that is what the second dr told them it was, but the fam practice dr didn't know. Then she was telling my brother and he said the same thing to her. It's pretty sad when someone who hasn't had the trainging can figure things out. The school should have recognized Aspergers, or at least had the kid tested so someone else could figure it out. kwim?
