You know Garsy - every time you talk about your projects, I wish I could do SOMETHING. I just lack space. And time. No time at all.
Kath - you could take a picture of the picture, rather than scan it.
I 'killed' a printer at work today. Not my fault. I put ink in, it tells me to 'reseat' it, so it knows I have changed it, but it can't read it.
Ironically, I was printing 'that girls' drawings at the time. She asked why I didn't have a spare in storage. Um. I bought a 'spare' March of 07 and it expired in July of 08. I put it in today. It doesn't work, I assume because it is old. If I had bought two, they'd both be old. So I expidited the shipping.

My parents have several of these shots! In a few of them, since my parents only have 3 acres, you can actually see the dogs in the kennel, and in one of them you can see my mom at the mailbox! We also have a couple of these photos of my grandparents property, one from the 50's and one from the early 80's right before Grandpa died and before Grandma had to sell the farm. Lots of memories in those photos!

Kath saw the story about the storm that said that folks missed the game. Apparently, the cable in town went out before power.
Doesnt' matter. Funny story.
Fellow Poppa works with was going to listen to his car radio when his son reminded him that had a 4 inch tv that plugged into the cigarette lighter. He took it and and his neighbor was driving past, saw the glow, and slowed down and asked if that was the game. Next thing he knew, there was a bunch of them in the yard with a six pack of beer watching the game.
The neat thing is I don't know that I have EVER watched a game with it being with family. It is neat that they came together for a while.
That family will not have power until Friday. I am blessed with my lights and computer.

larry wants to get me one of those little tvs that run on battery (not car battery). I'm all for it. maybe for christmas!

I am extremely blessed that I am able to help out with all that I do. If it weren't for the teacher workroom at the school I wouldn't have the space either!

Momma-Bee...I'm glad that your power is back on. I hope that all services are restored soon. My sister is not returning to her house yet due to food and fuel shortages.
Kath-I want to live on your land!!! That's a lovely picture!!
We had another tragedy here yesterday...a local retired pastor and family lost a son and brother Monday evening when he was struck by two cars and killed. This family were the founders of a Christian school for special needs children. The young man who died was only 28.

Well, I am fighting a virus and have to go to work today. I could handle it if it were a "sit down" type of job, however, I will be on my feet from 9:45 until 4:00. That is extremely tiring. Hopefully I will feel much better by church tonight.

That's so sad. 
Thing 2 got his midterm results. He has 5 A's and 4 B's. His B's are in reading, social studies, grammar, and spelling. So apparently we need to do something more at home.
My mum usually does their homework with them but she said lately that Thing 2 has been such a brat that he's constantly back talking her, smarting off, and throwing a fit when she makes him work. I told her to start spanking him, making him drink 'sassy juice' or something to curb that attitude. She said, 'No. He listens to you. You do it.' I know as his mother it's a no brainer, but not getting home after 6, having to feed and bathe him, it always made more sense for him to do his homework before I got home. I mean, he got home at 2. That's PLENTY of time to take care of what he needs.
So he and I are going to start the battle of the homework and pray we come out of it unscathed. 
It just drives me nuts that she won't discipline the boys when she has them but has the audacity to get all shocked and shook up when they're brats. The last time Thing 1 was horrid to me he had a good dose of 'sassy juice' and lost his phone for a week. Heaven forbid she do that.  She'd rather whine about them being brats then do something about it. *sigh*
I'm also having to deal with Thing 2's dad. *sigh* He's visited Thing 2 twice since I filed for child support this year and while that's great for Thing 2 I'm VERY uncomfortable with him; the last time he was here, without his wife, he hit on me. *groan* So I try not to talk to him. Last night I had to talk to him about the holidays. As soon as I got on the phone he started flirting with me! Gah! Makes me wish I had a REALLY big, single guy friend who could pretend he was my boyfriend whenever he came into town. *snigger*
Other than that...praying for everyone here whether you want it or not!

I hope you make it through the day OK, Julia. Garsy, I hope Zoe is feeling better.

I hope all goes well with the battle of the homework Tinkerbell. Maybe he'll figure out that it's in his best interest to just get it out of the way sooner rather than later. I definitely agree that it would be nice it it was done before six.
MBee, I wonder how your co-worker will feel when there is no water. Well, I think I know how she'll feel.... When the ice storm hit last winter I realized how unprepared I was for the loss of electricity. Actually we have a kerosene heater, but no water would have been a bigger problem. Thankfully we were not on the grid that lost power for days. Those times do give a new appreciation.

Julia - Get through your day - and then get some serious SLEEP tonight. So sorry to hear about the young man.
Momma - The co-worker you described sounds a lot like a former co-worker of mine. The type you seriously consider grabbing by the shoulders somedays just to shake some common sense into.
Tinkerbell - Don't know what to tell you about Thing 2 and the homework hassles. My kids start losing all privileges when they start becoming belligerent little smart mouthed brats, and if they were doing it with grandma - well let's just say the punishment would be even harsher. Of course they wouldn't dare smart off to my mom, as she would put them in their place toot sweet.
Dee, we need to get a kerosene heater too. Just in cast one of those nasty ice storms come our way again. We've had issues of our water pump freezing solid before and if we were without electricity for our electric space heaters in the winter, it wouldn't be long and we'd have rupturing pipes.
I took Zoe to the doc. this morning and it turns out that she has bronchitis. Severe bronchitis and he wants her out of school for the rest of the week. So in all she's been to school one day this week and really probably shouldn't have been there that day. She's on an antibiotic that should both clear up the bronchitis and her cankersores too. But as usual, antibiotics make her extremely sleepy. I need to e-mail her teacher soon too and just have her send home any work with her big brother or sister.

Was it Zoe that broke out? I'm just asking because of all that trouble that we had with DeeDee after antibiotics. The nurse implied it could heighten the response, so if it was, you may want to be more aware what she has eaten for the next week or two, just in case.
Does alum work on canker sores? Anyone???
Some times that beligerient child comes to my house, but he overstays his welcome quickly and kids who don't do homework, do chores and get zeros. Kids with zeros get grounded and have to do extra chores. That kid never stays long...
My co-worker was still complaining this morning. She must be like me - complain until it is out of your system.
I have at least three co-workers that I know of who will be out until Friday / Saturday (midnight Friday is Saturday in my book) My sister in law has no water. (and we can't really help with the shallow well)
A neighboring high school has opened their doors from 8pm to 6am for district residents to shower. Churches are hosting dinners. Fire departments have freezer trucks and will store your meat for you. On freecycle, there are ads for 'free firewood - cut your own' from folks who don't have the tools / stregthenth / time to do it.
It is nice to see folks coming together.

Nick's curriculum night was last night. IOW, a meet the teacher/see the classroom/hear what they're doing this year type thing. We saw his journal and other work he's done. He wrote a little about Brian's accident in there. His teacher seems nice, though she doesn't do email, which would make my life so much easier. Grrr. But she was nice. She's been teaching longer than Brian and I have been alive, and most of that in the 2nd grade.
They have a picture of him working hard taped to his desk, to remind him of what he looks like when he's working hard. They also have masking tape in a box around his seat, to remind him to stay in his space. I'm impressed.
We'll see how well they do with communication with us this year. That was a problem last year, if you remember.
We left Nick a note, an Airhead candy, and some googly eyed stickers. He'll know we were there (and his mother wasn't...for the third year in a row) and I hope know that we do care, no matter what his mother says to him about us.
We got court papers in the mail this week...October 23rd we go. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I just hope the judge sees it.
Sorry I don't comment much on other people's stuff...it seems you all have bigger kids and bigger kid issues sometimes. And since I haven't been there...well...

It took so long for me to write, and pray, and cry that I can't stay long, but I'm going to post the link elsewhere.
What I did not say, so that I can print the thread was that B was born premie and Lane was rediagnosed and H was held back that year - lack of attention under rough circumstances and understandable. But, it may be happening again. She is 12 and in 5th. I can't imagine being 13 in 5th grade next year but she is in an understandable slump now.

Donna...glad that it was a good parent/teacher night last evening and that Nick has a good teacher.
Garsy...I hope that Zoe feels better quickly!!
I had my day off yesterday and spent my paycheck on car repairs. We had an expensive switch (internal) that failed so I had no turn signals or flashers and while the car was in there, they discovered that my water pump was failing. Maybe that's why the lights failed...so that I would not destroy an engine.
I am thankful that the garage could take my car and finish it on my day off.
Youngest ds has his first Jr. High soccer game yesterday. It was fun.

Zoe was feeling so good last night and this morning and had no fever, and I had to go to school for the morning anyway, so I let her go back today. The Doctor doesn't want her to go swimming, to prevent getting that water in her lungs or ears, so she has to miss the final day of swim lessons.
I went in to school this morning just to finish up a couple of things, and to make sure Zoe would do okay. While I was there one of the 2nd grade teachers - not Zoe's teacher- got a phone call - and it didn't sound good. She immediately told the principal she had to go and flew out the door so fast. So say a prayer for Mrs. A and her family. I know she is married and has a little girl that might be nearing 2 now. Both her and her husbands parents live in the area too.
Okay - what do I do? Before Zoe heard that Miss Courtney (art teachers daughter) had died, she had painted her a really sweet picture for her. Do I bring it with me tonight and give it to Ms. C. or do I just file it away with the rest of Zoe's artwork and skip it?
And Tinkerbell, I'm loving your sweet little button avatars! This latest one is too cute!

Good morning all,
First let me say I am praying for each of you and the things you have posted here. I print them and add them to my prayer journal which I look at throughout the day. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
Second, I just wanted to tell you all about my dd's #2&3. On Wednesday they went to a field trip in the evening to a show called "Walking with the dinosaurs" It looked like an amazing production, animatronic dino's, sounds, etc. Several of the teachers got together and paid for this out of their own pockets which is amazing too. Anyway, my brag is this usually something that is big and loud like the dinos were and a big crowd like that would have caused a total freakout in one or both my girls. But not this time, they were just like "normal" kids, excited and happy to be there. Second brag, my girls usually don't talk much, even at home. They have been so excited about this and learning about the dino's that they can't stop talking about it. They know all the names of the dino's, what they eat, all of that stuff. I have never ever seen them retain information like that.
Oh and one brag on dd#1, they tested the kids reading levels for their AR program. My dd is in 8th grade, she now reads at 14.1 which is sophomore in college level...wow!
O.K. proud mommy going away.
