Narnia, I have a son that was doing second grade work at 5 (possibly two sons, but the older son wasn't doing "grades" then). He only worked less than an hour and half a day, and if we did 5 days during the week, I was having a REALLY good week. He also pestered me to do school. Really, one has to be naturally inclined to go THAT fast. An hour to an hour and a half of "school" type stuff (notice I didn't say workbooks and paper) should be enough to have a child of 5 years going at a level that they are made for (whatever that level is). If they do more than that, it should be because they ask for it. *sigh* I hate it when a spouse forgets that just because they are now one that the other person isn't obsolete. I saw a clip of a marriage builder thing that our church is promoting. It was about just this thing... spouses attacking the other. I think it was called Auto immunity marriage disease... or something like that. They had a great analogy... Maybe Donna can remember IT. Better, are you in the service?? I am still dragging. Russ is taking time off on this Thursday to get my blood drawn to have my levels tested to adjust my thyroid med. The weather is killing my knees (not the same as when I was running) and I had to take something for another migraine which I seem to be getting more of lately. David is still fighting a minor head cold. Sarah has meds for a different kind of rash thing which is getting is better. Rebekah is doing well, and so aren't the other two. Fred is making positive steps toward independence (I think). Mom is getting ready for her mission trip to Mexico coming next month. We have Caleb's B'day gift ready to buy. Rebekah's gift was given to us. It is one of those little organs with a few octaves on it as well as these buttons for chords. It is beautiful. It comes with a bench and books. It looks new (but isn't). I am a bit stressed about Christmas. To make schooling easier and with all the changes at BJU, we are trying to get the kids laptops. We need three of them. Russ has taken on extra classes this semester to pay for them. Unfortunately, we are floating AS financially because of circumstances out of her control. that should get better starting this month, but I am worried that it won't be soon enough. My mom is also having difficulties because of changes that are going on. She is considering getting a job when she gets back from her trip. So things are REALLY tight right now and it is hard to make ends meet, say nothing about buying laptops for the kids. That is the only thing except for a few stocking stuffers that we are getting them. We haven'/t needed to turn on the heat which is great. Russ is still working on that chimney. We have got to get that up soon... and running. Russ fixed the computer desk so the boys can watch their laptops while working on their books in front of them. Then he made a divider. Yes, Donna, just like ACE schools. The big difference is that my kids don't have bad memories or preconceptions connected to it, and they need something to separate them so they can each pay attention to their own DVDs and work. I also like them because I can sit at the round table and see if they need any help or whatnot. They seem to love the set up. I am really getting organized this year... well it gets better every year. This year, though, is going exceptionally. the clutter is all finding places and I can find what I need much faster this year. YAY!

Ellie, Are you going to try for used laptops or refurbished ones? Because my Dad retired from IBM, he can get a discount on computers, laptops etc... I don't think the discount is for Macs though but I can look into it for you if you want. He can sust say he's getting them for a family member. I don't know if there is a limit on how many, but I figure even a discount on one would help., right? Are you going to try and celeberate Hanukah this year too? Cause it coincides with Christmas-starts on the 22nd our calendar, I beleive. Also, Chag Sameach! Happy Yom Teruah!

Gifts--Nate is easy this year, unless I have a job NOW and can buy him what I want for his bday next month. But I think anything I give Brandon will go unused out of spite, so I may just have to give him money, or give him something that can sit there being unused, lol. I don't know what he wants anyway.

Cool deal on the k'nex, Donna! For bedding, have you tried overstock.com? They are having a bedding sale right now. I am feeling crampy, which is odd, as it's day 4, which for me usually means just the tail end of AF's visit. I think I need to go for a walk. We have to go to the library anyway, so maybe after Nate is done with the math he's working on we'll walk over there. I also feel very sleepy. I took a nap yesterday, not on purpose, and then stayed up late, and then didn't get a full night's sleep. Also, while I have been sick I have not been taking my Levity.

betterisoneday- #1- would he be telling the truth if he said you were depressed enough to be suicidal? I pray the answer is that he would be telling a lie. #2-it is probably a good thing that you did say you homeschooled. he might have taken a flat yes to mean that you were saying he was IN school and when he found out your child was not IN school have assumed that you lied. Gotta look at it from his side. he is thinking PS 100%, when he said in school he meant PS not Is the child being educated? #3 Believing that I am going to get a good answer for #1 let me also tell you about LEVITY <-- link vitamins here- A couple of us here take them and they work!(We do not make any money on the sale of said vitamins at all.) I have been diagnosed as having Dysthymia(Chronic Mild Depression) way back when--- 1994? anyway- it kicks up a notch from time to time and I have been on prozac and another antidepressant. I am a Military wife and mom of 6. My husband is deploying to Iraq at present so you can easily say I am in the midst of a situation that is causing issues for me. I have been taking the Levity now for 5 weeks and It came on slowly, I had not really noticed the difference but my sister and husband have said it is helping and after them telling me the changes in the last 5 weeks I can see them now. praying for ya.

To give you an idea of where I am coming from, I will explain what I did when my husband got to the point where he was what I considered out of control. He was making some very bad decisions. Previously I had thought I had to obey him, but had been in serious and constant prayer and Bible study. Finally, I realized that I could not go along with his decisions any longer, but that I had to do something and it had to be done in a respectful and submissive manner. I went to my husband and apologized for leaving all the responsibility on his shoulders and putting the pressure of “final say” on his shoulders. I apologized for not being the helper God had made me to be, but an enabler instead. I then told him that from now on I would work to be in agreement with him and take on the equal responsibility as well, but would not ever do anything again that I disagreed with. This did not include anything I didn’t particularly like or not desire, just what I didn’t agree with. An example of disagreement is when I think something is wrong or a bad choice, I won’t go along with it, but will try to work together to find the right course. I will listen carefully to him and expect the same from him to me. If we do not see eye to eye we will pray, research, and whatever else it takes until we do agree. If my husband doesn’t want to work to unity, I cannot make him, but I will do my part and will not participate in anything that I consider to be wrong, dangerous, sinful or similar. However, if my husband wants to do something that I don’t and it doesn’t fall into the above category, I will generally defer to him and do whatever he wants. Fortunately he is pretty much the same, so it’s a balanced relationship. I will favor his desires over mine, when it comes to things that are not moral or life type choices. For example, if we have extra funds to work with and he wants to spend it on rides at the fair with the kids, great. I won’t go on the rides, because I cannot physically handle it, but I’m happy to see him and the kids enjoying themselves. If I need a new pair of jeans and so does he, I’ll buy his first. If he comes home sore, even if I’m tired, I’ll draw him a bath and encourage him to go to bed early. If I have time, I’ll give him a massage. None of these things are dependent on how he is behaving towards me. I do them because he is my husband and I respect his needs and desires. I want to build him up and encourage him. I will arrange myself under him and consider him more important than myself. This is often a lot more difficult than obedience. In order to be truly submissive, it must come from the attitude of the heart and be a desire to bless and help my husband. I’ll give you some examples of how I would respond to my husband if he said the things you listed. This would be based on the aforementioned apology coming first. quote:
ORIGINAL: narnia Here was dh's response to my concerns: "The schedule is rough, you will need to adjust it to fit. But I apologize for accusing you of not keeping the old schedule. The problem is not that you are accusing me of not keeping the schedule. The problem is that you are demanding that I follow what you want, that you are trying to force me to do something and that you expect me to go along with something I disagree with. I cannot in good conscience do that. You are demanding that I go against my own judgment and to violate my conscience. That is bullying and ungodly behavior. (Frankly, at this point I’d begin to pray aloud for my husband and rebuke the devil and ask the Lord to break down the strongholds. When I began to do this with my husband, he became infuriated for a while, but he did repent of it. quote:
ORIGINAL: narnia The evening snack time should probably be a fixed time so that she can be in bed, but she doesn't seem to stay up all night now that Disney is gone. I would remind him that a standard bedtime routine and a requirement that she go to sleep be enforced. quote:
ORIGINAL: narnia It is more obvious that she is growing into the subjects than it is that that you are not teaching. Don’t be so easily discouraged, that is what she does. Like her, you need to learn to press on and keep trying. The only real defeat is surrender without a fight." Learning should not be a fight. Teaching should be gentle. I am not discouraged by any lack of progress on her part. I am discouraged by your attitude of superiority and the unreasonable demands you are making. quote:
ORIGINAL: narnia I told him that what he doesn't understand is that hearing comments all year long about how she is behind is demoralizing. I also told him that we've been doing this for a year already, so it is normal to be discouraged after a year of hearing how behind she is. I then repeated my assertion that I will not put up with another year of negative comments. I also asked why are we homeschooling? He wants a traditional school at home environment, so why not just put her in that traditional school environment in the first place? That makes sense and sounds reasonable. Keep in mind that this is my approach. I am not telling you what to do, but trying illustrate what my approach is with concrete examples. In my own life, I try not to dump too many things on my husband at once. He has asked me not to do that and I try to honor his request. However, if we had a conversation like the one above, it would probably end after discussing the first comment, because I try to address one issue at a time, like my husband asked and we try to work through it. I try to avoid nagging and instead work to resolve the issue when it comes up, as much as possible, then only bring something up when it occurs and needs to be addressed. For a while, my husband wasn’t trying to work through things with me, he was just angry that I was “defying” him. That is the word he used, since I refused to obey him any longer, he considered me to be disobedient and defiant. I felt really bad for him at the time and just prayed constantly for him and for our marriage. We came through it and are now doing much better about six years later. We are still working through things. After growing up with wrong ideas and making a lot of mistakes in adolescence and in marriage, we have had a lot to work through. Over the last six years, I have learned a lot about showing respect and submitting to my husband, as well as striving for unity and trying to work with my husband as much as possible, always taking into account what he says and trying to find answers that will work for us together.

I don't remember if someone else mentioned them before me. I found out about them because a friend who had had extremely bad PPD had done research and found them and they changed her life. They definitely help mine, when I take them. When I have a job, I should go on auto-ship just as a reminder to myself to take them (you know, if a bottle shows up and you still have some left, lol, that you have not been doing your job!). In any case, I think it's more than a couple, now. Christina (Mrs. X) even blogged about them.

Walmart doesn't carry it any longer, I am sorry to say. There is ONE store in my town that carries it, Super Supplements, I think it's called. They are a chain, so you may have them in your area. The Geneva Health site has a find-a-store feature. Also, it comes in two types--Levity and Levity Plus, the first being only the vitamins that they found depressed women were deficient in, and the second being that plus your regular daily multivitamin. The first is one teensy pill per day and the second is three larger pills per day.

The local store, which I think is called Super Supplements. I keep associating Whole Foods grocers with you, Cynthia, because I shopped there the same day we visited you. But really it isn't close to you. I wonder, though, if they would have it. ETA--Cynthia, J-Vee's health store and Seattle Super Supplements, both in your town, carry them.

I am not familiar with them, but struggle with depression myself at times. The levity seems pretty reasonably priced.

I'll have to think about purchasing Levity Plus. I ought to be taking a multi-vitamin, but I don't. Do you ladies feel like you have more energy when you are taking it?

Do you ladies feel like you have more energy when you are taking it? Somewhat. 'LEVITY' actually stands for 'Light, Exercise and VITamin therapY' And you are supposed to follow the whole program for best results. Um, it appears Brandon is finally making his 15th emergency trip. It isn't life threatening, we don't think...and it also isn't something any of us would suffer from. In fact, I didn't realize it was a possible ailment. Jody said he'd call after they get professional help.

Describes my dh to a tea! (well I'm just betting he's that much older than you)! Just want to encourage you that we've found a LOT of people in the military who are very supportive of hsing!! Is there a hs support group on your base or in the neighboring community? I'm willing to bet you can connect with some people who are higher ranking (we've met & become good friends with many officers & their families who homeschool). This might come in handy should anything ever come of the one SNCO's threats! I second Cynthia's suggestion of joining HSLDA & you get a military discount too! Narnia - I'm glad you reiterated not wanting to hear all the negative comments. I'm praying he heard that & takes it to heart! Ellie - I'm praying you feel better soon! Who else thinks Cynthia needs to teach a class or write a book on true submission & marital unity?!!! I'm learning so much just from reading her posts! I've been thinking about the Levity vitamins for a while. Maybe it's time to do something about it! ETA - praying for Jake & Brandon!!

More energy. Less tired. Better mood for sure. Less cravings. It is a process. I am still working on the 20 minutes a day of walking in the sun. that gets the Light and Exercise all in one go. Right now my sunshine exercise amounts to purposely parking in the south 40 at the store or at the college.
