I wouldn't classify CCR as Southern Rock. Their style doesn't fit. Plus, for all his Cajun posturing, John Fogerty is a California boy.

Looks like their main criteria was somebody in the band had to be born south of the Canadian border. Screaming Cheetah Wheelies??????????

Nobody thought Blue Oyster Cult on that list was a bit strange? Good ol' Long Island southern boys. Bad Company is on that list which stinks because a friend of mine said they were southern rock because he saw their tapes everywhere here in Florida (yes, that was a part of his evidence). I understand that they have some stuff in common with southern rock but Bad Company is from Britain and don't "honky tonk". With all the bands on the list how come REM didn't make it?

The Eagles are from CA, James Gang are from Ohio, Grand Funk Railroad and Ted Nugent are from just outside Detroit MI. Some members of the Traveling Wilburys were from England, as are the Cream, Derek and the Dominos, Humble Pie and the Rolling Stones. They padded the list.

Traveling Wilburys have no business being on there. They were a super-group, anyway (Jeff Lynn of E.L.O., Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, George Harrison of The Beatles, and Bob Dylan), and I don't think any of their stuff sounds even remotely like Southern Rock. I like the music that's playing, but Dave is right... this list is padded, big time!

So, geography doesn't necessary make a band a certain type, according to that list. That's like saying Keith Urban can't be country because he's from Australia. kd

Janis Joplin was from Port Arthur, Texas, so she was a southern girl. I guess the question remains--what defines a group as "Southern Rock"? Style, geography? If style, what style, exactly, is "Southern Rock?" If geography, is it where you were born, where you were raised, or where you first got your start? Or is it all in the eye of the beholder?

I don't agree with some on the list, but wasn't Janis from Texas, I may be wrong, and she would be maybe southern blues?

The following is MY opinion...ONLY...based on being a southern rock fan... I believe "southern rock" is first of all...SOUTHERN...it's a fusion of country, bluegrass, rock, jazz and blues... Skynyrd's double lead guitar is a hall mark (later used by the Eagles). The songwriting...the songs are more like stories... And...they just flat out ROCK... But that's just my southern redneck/hippie opinion :) NDY

Here's the general description of the genre from an article on Southern Rock on Wikipedia.com "Southern rock is a subgenre of rock music. It developed in the Southern United States from rock and roll, country music, and blues, and is focused generally on electric guitar and vocals." The reason it gets its name is from the fact that originated in the south, but what makes it distinct is how it blends country, rock 'n' roll, and blues and the focus on certain instruments and sounds. So just because someone is from the south (say Texas or Oklahoma) doesn't necessarily make them Southern Rock musicians. Conversely just because a band or singer is from say Canada or California doesn't mean they AREN'T Southern Rock. Like uncabeeil said, some of those artists on that list like James Taylor and Janis Jopin don't fit the Southern Rock genre at all, but not because of where they're from.

Southern rock, to me, is at least two lead guitars with a third playing rhythm, lots of piano, and a vocalist that sound like he (or she) gargled with Jack Daniels. It helps if one of the guitar leads plays some slide. Skynyrd is definitely the benchmark.

I would put the Allman Bros as the benchmark. (back when Duane and Berry were still alive) I have always loved the guitar duets done by Duane and Dickey. Their new guy - Derek Trucks - is really good too.

I grew up with Southern Rock as my soundtrack for life. Skynyrd was my favorite but I also listened to a ton of Molly Hatchet, The Outlaws, Danny Joe Brown Band, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Rossington Collins Band, Charlie Daniels Band, .38 Special and some Allmans. I was a Skynyrd fan through and through and even got to play with the band live on the radio in 1991, but I hardly listen to the stuff any more. The term "Southern Rock" is a bit of a misnomer, although it did become a sort-of sub-genre of rock. The guys in Skynyrd would say in interviews that they preferred the term "rock from the south" as they were more influenced by English bands like the Rolling Stones and Cream than by their non-Yankee culture and locale. Still, the marketing folks thought that the Confederate Battle Flag would make a nice back-drop... Lest anyone think that the guitar playing in Skynyrd is "repetitive and bad", I challenge you to learn to play a few of their songs correctly. Most people I've come across in 28 years of playing can't even correctly play the intro to "Sweet Home Alabama", much less anything else. While both Allen Collins and Gary Rossington formed much of their solos from basic pentatonic scales, they usually were well crafted solos that fit the song as perfectly as a violin solo in a Bach piece. Then you have guitarist Ed King and, his replacement, Steve Gaines; each was a powerhouse player with few peers back in the day. Leon Wilkeson's bass playing was, like the guitarists, under-rated and, again, often incorrectly reproduced by most every bassist I've ever come across. Who am I kidding...I'm still a fan.
