You can go faster on those but in rush hour it doesn't matter because you'll still be stuck at a light or in traffic.

And you might as well get a scooter or a motorcycle , because cars aren't willing to share the road with bicycles even though they are classified as a vehicle according to traffic laws.

no thanks...

i prefer my A/C when it's 110 degrees outside in summer....

this morning, it was "only" 85....

and, i have a commute of 35 miles each way.....

not very practical.

That looks alright if you have bike lanes on local streets, you report to work and don't leave for the whole shift, and the weather cooperates for most of the year. But there's no truck bed for lumber, and how's the towing capacity to haul my tractors and equipment around? [8D]

Yeah, what about my surround sound system, what about the rear entertainment center with the flip down screen and dvd player. How am I supposed to tow my boat and take the kids camping? How do you expect me to commute without climate control. Ha..ha..ha....ROTFL

You can't use those on Interstates, or most state highway systems.

And I doubt they're very safe in poor light and weather conditions.

Show me that same commute in the middle of a freezing cold snowstorm, icy roads, or the extreme heat and humidity of the southern US.

Nah, that's ok, I kinda sorta like being alive. My husband has to haul a bunch of stuff around for his work, and pretty soon I'll need a carseat.

Laws vary from state to state but anywhere you can ride a bicycle you can ride this. Some states (i.e. Arizona) has speed restrictions on motorized bicycles (20 mph). In California we regulate it by engine size. 50cc and below no restrictions; above 50cc and it is considered a moped and needs to be licensed as such.

I am in awe of the faith of those who ride bikes in city traffic. But what is their faith in? Divine protection? Human kindness?

They seem to believe that all those drivers in all those motorized vehicles are, at all times, aware of their surroundings, never impatient or in a hurry, and full of kindness and good will towards those bike riders.

I do not have such a high opinion of my fellow drivers, and in fact am on high alert to stay alive in my fully-safety-equipped minivan with power steering, anti-lock brakes and all side airbags.

There is NO WAY I trust my fellow drivers enough to ride a bike on the same road they are driving motor vehicles.

Hats off to those optimists who have the courage to give it a go.

Varies. Don't think it would be practical for me to commute with but would be great for getting around town and recreational fun with the boys. There are a growing number of people in my community who have in-town vehicles that they use for errands, grocery store, shopping, etc. and just plain cruising the streets. Mostly, electric cars, sort of modified golf carts and the kids like to use the gas powered skateboards.

I think it would be great riding up to the sidewalk cafe for a Saturday breakfast, the boys and I, taking questions about the bikes, conversing with members of the community and sharing the Word of God. <IXOYE><

nah...we got "sideswiped" by the hurricane...and just got some wind and rain most of Saturday...but, that was it. Nothing severe here.

As far as that "motor bike" thing....a typical summer day is 100+ degrees....and, in the winter, it can be fairly cold.

I commute back and forth from Fort Worth (35 miles round trip...staying off of the major freeways would be even longer)....so, use as a commuting vehicle is 'out'....

guess i just don't see the sense in getting something that is so impractical......you can take the kids anywhere on it.....you can't even take a passenger...

It would spend 99.9% of the time in the garage.......to be used only when it's not scorching outside....not freezing...and, iam going someplace fairly close (most of my time is spent at work)....and, going to that someplace alone.....that eliminates pretty much everywhere.

perhaps an unmarried single guy would get good use of it!

i know that our local SEGWAY store is pretty busy....especially since "mixed use" development in our area has REALLY been popular for the past 5-7 years or so....

I like the looks of that. I ride my bike a lot and having that would bridge the gap for me to be able to commute to the office. It's not that far...13 miles one way... but it's very hilly.
I suspect over the next 10 to 20 years we will see a change in the way we americans see commuting by bicycle.

That'd be cool.

I'm trying to lobby for a scooter, but so far it's a no-go. I'd still need a car in the winter (November through March or April), so buying something else wouldn't save me much on the insurance, etc.

I'd be SCARED to take anything like this (scooter, motorcycle, whatever) on the 401! And a motorized bike wouldn't be legal on the 400-series highways. I suppose one could take back roads if one weren't in a hurry, though.

One thing I like better about a scooter is that it has storage space. Unless you wear a backpack and can fit your groceries in it, a bicycle is impractical to take on errands.

Basically, I think North Americans are too used to their cars and wouldn't want the inconvenience involved in giving up their regular vehicle for something like this.

Nope, its not for everyone. What got me started in all this was the last great gas price hike and the information that came out of that. They were pushing electric cars back then but the problem was the short range of them. That's when they hit us with the statistics that most of our driving was short around town driving which would work out fine. Soon after that the hybrids came along. Lee Iacocca, the former CEO of Chrysler at the time, developed the e-Bike. An all electric bicycle with a range of like 25 miles per charge. I rode my bicycle to work at the time which was 10 miles one way. I thought to myself that I could actually charge the detachable battery at work and I would never ever have to pay a dime for commuting to and from work again. The cost of the bike was high though at betwee $2400 to $3,000.

This is where I stumbled onto the gas driven bicycle. Cheaper by a mile and the cost of gas minimal; not free like the other plan but range has greatly increased as the trade off. The e-Bike apparently isn't being made anymore, too bad because in talking to owners of it they just loved it! The cost of the electric bicycles is still up there but because of the growth of the hybrids the battery technology has gotten a lot better. Since these vehicles are all electric they are gasoline independent and the cost per gallon is zero. Great deal if the long lines for gas ever reappear like in the 80's. Take a look here this guy built this bicycle for traveling and has ridden over 2,000 miles on a trip. He uses baskets to hold stuff. Put a large basket on the front, a rear rack will hold two side racks and a top rack. Heck they even sell side front fork racks. The guy lives in hill country and when the bicycle make it up the hill where he lives with no problems he said he was hooked. Here is his story. [Click Here]

Some more forward thinking individuals have already made the adjustments and reaped the rewards. Not all but certainly most can't think outside the box. There are some that have made changes and more are at least buying small and smaller cars to capture better fuel mileage. Not that there are very many who really care about that or the cost to the environment or dependence on foreign oil but hit them in the wallet and changes come about rapidly.
