joannepir -> So, when does your school year start? (8/27/2008 11:18:47 AM)

We started our homeschool year this past Monday. We like to get a good head start so we can be finished by Memorial Day. When does everyone else begin?

cynthia -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/27/2008 11:21:26 AM)

We will start on September 2nd, then we are going on the vacation the following week and will get back to it on September 15th.

Bagel -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/27/2008 11:24:29 AM)

We are starting on Sept. 8, as Dh will be on vacation the week before.

dianetavegia -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/27/2008 11:28:10 AM)

We school to coincide with the middle school where my hubby works. We began last Friday, looking over material and planning, and will finish when we finish. Monday was our first day of classes.

Generally we've gone along with the county calendar just so Nick would be off the same time as his friends but hubby's school system doesn't take off a lot of teacher work days so starts much later and ends a day or so earlier.

shadowspring -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/27/2008 11:36:07 AM)

We started Monday because it's easier to stay on schedule with the public school now that Sol's freinds with so many ps kids.

Homegrownkids -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/27/2008 11:58:04 AM)

We started for real on Monday. I tried to start last week, but we only got one day done[8D]. I have yet to start 6 yr old though. Today is Wed... maybe tomorrow with her (I hope)

Consecrated2God -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/27/2008 12:48:57 PM)

We did a test week mid-July, and I started with them Monday of last week. It's going well so far. I'm enjoying our new curriculum.

Jenny-Fair -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/27/2008 1:03:39 PM)

It's rather arbitrary for us--we begin when September begins. We school year-round, though, so it isn't like we are on vacation until then, lol. And we almost never begin and end a book at the beginning and end of the school year (that is...when we even use textbooks).

zoebob -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/27/2008 1:40:27 PM)

We started on August 13. Pretty much when the kids start getting board and VBS's end...and after my birthday. We at least take my birthday week off

I try to be done around Mother's Day. This year was crazy with a separation and a death in the family so we went until mid June this year

Ellie-Mae -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/27/2008 2:21:25 PM)

Yeah, You needed to take your b'day week off.[;)]

We started doing school a week ago Monday. School officially starts on the 8th though. So the kids start official school already two or three weeks ahead!

amybreit -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/28/2008 9:01:27 AM)

We usually start after Labor Day (which is what will happen this year - so next Tuesday). But last year, we started mid-August & it was nice to get some things done before all of our activities started back up. This year, we were on vacation until mid-August & I had just ordered our new stuff, so it's back to starting after Labor Day. Also, many things came up last year & we ended up finishing up some things after ds went to scout camp (we usually try to finish before then). So, in the end, starting early didn't really get us "ahead" (whatever ahead is since we make up our own schedule[;)])!

his_chosen -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/28/2008 12:08:54 PM)

We used to start the first week of August. However, SOMEONE decided that the first week of August was the perfect time for a retreat... So we now start the second week of August. We try to be done the last week of April/first week of May.

Wow! I didn't know that I had such a power of influence![:D]

joannepir -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/28/2008 2:00:42 PM)

Wow, that would be nice to finish the end of April! What a nice break that would be!
The nice part about starting this week is that all the other activities don't start until September - music lessons, sports, co-op. It feels nice to just ease into it this year.

cynthia -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/28/2008 2:09:25 PM)

Around here, April is cold and wet. Often times it's still freezing at night. Too cold for vacation!

joannepir -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/28/2008 4:17:12 PM)

Here in NY, April isn't always predictably nice either. By the time we take a week off for Easter break (yep, its still Easter for us - not Spring break) and get a taste of "no school" we are anxious to get our school year over.

his_chosen -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/28/2008 4:22:54 PM)

April is when ds1 and I are ramping up our bicycle training, preparing for the big tour Mother's Day weekend. So that works well. However, now that we're back in school, ds1 and I are still in the heart of our race season. Five weekends in a row of races! Two down, three to go... So this isn't working out too well. I vote for a shorter school year so we can get all of our play time!

cindybode -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/28/2008 8:45:38 PM)

Starting assumes that at some point you have finished. We don't. We school year round.

bzirk -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/28/2008 8:55:00 PM)

We'll start on Sept. 2nd, but my oldest high schooler has already started a couple of courses.

elliemaejune -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/30/2008 8:32:48 PM)

Our school year always began January 1 and ended December 31 :-)

If I were going to pick a date for the fall term, it would probably have been around the Tuesday after Labor Day. Spring term would have been around the middle of January (we took off Thanksgiving through January-ish).

bzirk -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/31/2008 2:02:10 PM)

Most homeschoolers I know educate year round. Homeschooling is just conducive to that, but I do not have as structured a "school" in the summer as I do during the traditional school year.

As for April, it is totally unpredictable in Colorado (same thing with October). You could start out on a beautiful, sunny day and 70 degree weather and end up with a blizzard. I have actually driven out to a nice spot to picnic only to hit a wall of white when I was driving home and being stuck in a white out for two hours. [8D]

Let me put it this way, vacations to Colorado are cheap(er) in April and October. The potentially horibble weather makes it big time off season.

judii1 -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (8/31/2008 4:58:28 PM)

We were going to start Tuesday but I think I am going to wait until next Monday.

singingmom -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (9/1/2008 9:35:14 PM)

I'm ready for a break!

We do year round, and we started at the end of June. We'll be tracking out in a week, and going back on 9/15 for another 9 weeks.

at-home -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (9/3/2008 11:55:26 PM)

*After* Labor Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Always!

wylyne -> RE: So, when does your school year start? (9/4/2008 10:05:17 AM)

We school year round, although lighter in the summer, and usually start the new school year around the 2nd week of Aug.

We started our new school year on August 11 this year.
