so covering your head keeps you humble? is that you why you do it? i am still understanding why you do this. but i am thinking you just do it while you pray?

When I go to God, whether in prayer, worship or study, I personally feel that I need to put aside anything that can get in way of my focus on Him. I need to be obedient and humble and covering my head helps me in this.

Head covering is an interesting issue because we are given one command. It translates in different ways for many women. It took a couple of years of covering before I truly understood what it meant for me and it's purpose for me. God opened my eyes to it at a specific time and after prayer I came to the feelings I have on this issue. I encourage you to continue reading this thread, continue to look into this issue and ask questions, but most importantly pray about this and ask God what we wants from you in respects to head covering.

Uh, no, only God and God alone can keep a person humble. In fact, a person could wear a head cover and have it be a source of pride.

I would say that if one does cover (wholeheartedly) the decision to cover is a result of being humbled by God in that area, but simply covering one's head won't make you humble..so I would say humility makes you cover, not that the cover makes you humble.

I AM NOT SAYING that people who don't cover aren't humble. PLEASE don't anybody misinterpret what I am saying that way.

Good point Rebekah.
It's not the covering that makes us humble, but the heart of obedience to God's Word and will on this matter.

My husband has grown to love my covering. He finds it attractive, that I hide my glory and show it to him only. Sometimes when we're on the webcam, he asks me to take off my covering and let my hair down...

and the common reason for covering seems to be in relation to your husband -- does anyone cover for different reasons?

I cover (just for church services or my off days until I'm a civilian) and am not married, so... yeah, for reasons other than having a husband. My reasons are more just that when praying I feel as though I should be covered. It's also a reminder to me that I am accountable to G-d for my actions (not saying that anyone isn't, it was just something in my life).

(Sorry if this was too long ago to reply to.)

I attend a Messianic congregation and both Jew and Gentile there bring there prayer shawls. When the lady lights the Shabbat candles she covers her head while doing it.

I have been inconsistent but I do want to do it more often, mainly when I am praying and/or having a private quiet time with the L-rd. I have one of those white ones with blue trimming and there is Scripture on it in Hebrew. The blue color means Immanuel.

In OT times, when a man was annointed, his head was annointed...the highest point of the body. When we cover our heads, it shows submission and yielding to G-d. The Holy Spirit was present in Samson in his hair. When cut, the HS left Him. The Amish use a piece of Scripture in the NT (forgot where) where it says that women should cover their heads when they pray. They do wear it most of the time though. Like anything else, I believe that if we have a heartfelt desire to practice what G-d taught the people it will bring much blessing to us. The blessing here is knowing that we are willingly covering our heads for Him. It makes you closer to G-d.

Rebekah, I'm finally here.

First question, no we're not Mennonite. Before our cult adventure, my family was Mennonite and I still have many, many friends in various Menno and Brethren churches. Josiah didn't know what Mennonite was at first. Apparently the Mennonite Church uses an entirely different name in Ethiopia.

quote:

BTW, Maggie, I was wondering...does Josiah want you to cover, or is it more just your own conviction, and he's just like "Whatever floats your boat?"

I think it's the latter. It's not something he ever struggled with or had to deal with himself. Growing up, covering was just the norm. Decent women wore dresses and covered at least in church and that was that. Here, as I said, he was a little worried about "standing out" but I think he's realized that if we stick to all our other convictions, that's unavoidable anyway. People seem more curious about our prodigious fertility anyway.

Oh..so, may I ask what denomination you are now..and to keep it on topic..do many of the women cover?

I always wanted to hear more about that...do you have a blog or pfy or anything anywhere telling about it, or can you pm me?...you probably can't get too into it here..we don't wanna go to too far off topic..although I guess you could tell me if they covered...

Oh, good grief..I could understand that if you were up to 10 kids, but 3? Good grief. And to keep it on topic..if you have a girl will you require that she cover, or will she make that decision..if you do require it..at what age will that be?

We go to a non-denominational charismatacostal megachurch. Waffling about whether to stay. A few of the older ladies cover but it's with the fancy hats. One lady asked me about covering and says she remembers when she was a little girl in a Pentacostal church all females covered with lace doilies or reasonably plain hats.

lol. Three seems to be the absolute acceptable limit for intact families around here. Blended families and single moms get a break. But if you're married with three kids you're supposed to say "We're DONE. Thank GOD!".
I don't know what we will do with a little girl. I have a whole bunch of baby bonnets all packed away and ready. Probably won't actually require coverings for little girls, I doubt dh would want that either.

I'll pm you about the cult thing. Right now I need to head for bed. Ummm...actually, remind me, 'cause I will forget between now and the next time I'm on here.

Reading Maggie's post gave me a thought....maybe I asked this already. (If I did just point that out to me, it's very early in the morning.)

What will be your expectations for your daughters to cover their heads? Will you require it or let them decide for themselves?

I dunno Lexie.
Our girls are getting older....and we've discussed it some, but not really, it's a back issue right now kwim?
On a related topic, I do dress my girls (especially my oldest) in dresses 99% of the time. My oldest already has a full figure (she gets that from Justin's fam) and pants cling tightly to her in places that should not be clinging on a 6yo Dresses just fit better and keep her sweet little self covered.
As far as covering. We haven't 'required' it. Amanda will actually ask often if she can wear a scarf like mine, or a headband. I always allow her too. She has asked me a couple of times why I'm always wearing a scarf...and we've kept it simple so far, "Because God's word tells me to" kind of a thing.
As she grows, if she shows more interest, we'll encourage her to seek God and read on her own about it.
Sandy

I get compliments too and rarely a why. I had one person ask me if I was Russian though. Actually, he didn't ask me...he just started speaking Russian to me.

That is interesting, just a few months ago when we were traveling, there was this Russian guy at a truck stop who asked my sister and I if we were from Russia because of our headcoverings. He really had an accent and I didn't understand him at first so he may very well have been speaking Russian! Anyway, this may be off topic but, it was a real blessing hearing how he said his life is completely turned around from what it was. and he is now a born-again Christian.

okay that is what i thought by a woman covering her head it does mean being submissive and it does mean keeping in mind that God is over us and we are not over him. and i thank you so much for explaining it, even though you were not neccesarylily talking to me...... again i do appreciate it.

Yep, I guess I guess it's pretty commonplace among Russian Christians to cover all the time.

I have been going back and forth over covering as well. I believe the Word just as it is written so I am convicted to cover my head. Here is my struggle: My husband is not a believer, he is seeking. He totally doesn't get it and quite honestly, finds it kind of odd. So, at this moment in time, I don't choose to cause my husband and discomfort by covering my head.

That said, God brings me back to this topic regularly (as evidenced by my coming back to CW after a long absence and discovering this thread immediately) So I need to pray more and trust Him more.....I think I will start to wear a cover at home again and see where it leads.

Jen, do you attend church regularly? Could you begin by covering in church only?

For some reason, I like this thread. I'm already tall and 'stand out' I cant imagine on top of that broadcasting a head covering.

Funny you should mention that! I covered today in church. DH even complimented my outfit, lol. We are new at a very small church, I was the only one with a cover and I didn't feel strange at all, I felt, well, right with God. Isn't that cool?

That IS cool. I'm the only one at my church who covers too. It's obvious (to me) but I don't care, and I like it.
That's rad Jen.
What type of cover did you wear? Just a scarf?

A friend of mine who covers sees no problem with not covering when you are at home with your husband. He is to see your glory-it is a pleasure for him to see it so she does not cover when she is at home with her husband.

I wore a long, almost opaque, white gauzy type scarf wrapped around twice, knotted at my neck and pulled wide from the top down the back of my head....does that make sense?

I am a covering gal too. Just recently having been moved/convicted to cover. My covers vary from the traditional veil to a bandana to a kerchief and even to an amish prayer bonnet. Today its freezing outside so I have a skull cap type hat on with my hair in a bun so the hat covers all my hair. Honestly I try to do plain boring colors...black, navy, brown and white though my hat today is pink

For me its been a sign of reverence and submission to God. Faith in God and a constant reminder of who is Lord of my life. It something that has been on my heart for quite awhile and after lots of prayer I made my decision to cover. I think for me its also a way of teaching me humility as my hair has always been my favorite feature and something i spend lots of time on!
