You know, with no disrespect to the many who are apalled by the concept of a Loving God and an Eternal Hell, C.S. Lewis's book "The Great Divorce" is an eminently readable logical fantasy on WHY Hell must exist for beings that have immortal souls. It is a FANTASY only, but depicts a time at the end of the world when those who have chosen hell get invited on a day trip to the outskirts of heaven... well, not to ruin the plot, (and I hope you realize that this is NOT a theological treatise, but a FANTASY), the creatures who have chosen hell, even when faced with the wonders of heaven, CHILLINGLY return to their place of torment! Ah... but there's more, when we see the reasons WHY these poor beknighted creatures can't choose heaven, we SEE OURSELVES in so MANY of the LIES that they deceive themselves with.. (at least I do)... and it prompts one to say... there but for THE Grace....!

I believe in "hell" but, I more so believe in what is known as "Gehenna" in the NT. Gehenna is way different from what we think it is tho...

whether a person believes in it or not does not change the fact that hell is a very real place. the bible teaches us about the existence of hell........ will "not believing in hell" keep one from going to heaven?

So.... it is reasonable to say that Hell won't be physical fires, insofar as physical bodies are going to be changed to something else.... unless you think that ONLY the bodies of the "saints" are going to be changed to something else, and not the bodies of the "infidels" even if you were to adhere to this improbability, would God somehow fashion a form of flesh that, in the case of the infidels, would always be concious of pain, but never get consumed? Does it not seem more likely that "fire" is a metaphor for the unrelenting anguish of an immortal soul cut off from God forever? THIS kind of suffering is not unfamiliar to human beings...on earth sometimes caused by a tragedy (rape and death of a child), sometimes caused by our own willfuness, (drunken spree ending in quadriplegia)... This pain does NOT give up and it does NOT go away, except by the grace and healing of God... now, take that healing grace away... and you have.... HELL!

Does it not seem more likely that "fire" is a metaphor for the unrelenting anguish of an immortal soul cut off from God forever? Actually IMO it is all that and more. Consider this: a body much more sensitive to physical pain than our own, but indestructable. Pain beyond the point that would instantly kill us, never ending and never diminished in perception of it. (we don't get used to it) Add to that the pain of being in a "God vacuum," devoid of any sense of His presence. I am not sure that even begins to scratch the surface. Exactly how much pain theoretically could an infinite God, all knowing and all powerful, inflict on an individual and be able to sustain him thru it?

The word "Hell" comes from Scandanvian Mythology...Hel was the goddess of the underworld. So when the question of Hell is posed, do you mean Hade, Gehenna, or Tartarus of the NT?

Revelation 20:14 heralds "Death and Hell were cast into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death". Hell in this instance is the greek word Hades. From this verse, Hell is differect from the Lake of Fire.

Do I beleive that there is a seperation from God through unbelief? Yes it is clear many are already demonstrating the consequences of their unbelief by trying to create hell on earth. Can there be a worse place than some of the concentration camps men have built on earth? Hell is but a consequence of judgement. If there is no hell there is no judgement. Why would men then want to believe there is no hell? Unbelievers don't believe in hell.

Instead of opinions...use scripture concerning Hell. Then lets discuss it. How about Psalm 139:8 David said "If I make my bed in Hell (Sheol) thou art there". Whoa...that blows away "eternal seperation" from God.

If you end up in the bad place, if you really concentrate really hard, maybe it won't be so bad. That's what some psychology teaches. Or how about what some religions teach us: Command G-d to get you out of there! Or negative thinking is what makes negative things happen, so think possitively! Or pay your way out. Or . . . . quote:

The only problem there is that David is clearly using poetic language, not didactic. David could not literally make his bed in Hell, so how can we jump to the conclusion that God literally is there?

Then, when Jesus said the Gates of Hell will not prevail against my church...are you on the inside or outside of those gates?

This is another example of Christ using figurative language to teach a truth. He did not literally give keys to the Apostles, anymore than Peter (or Peter's confession, if you want) was literally a rock. Inside or outside doesn't come into play in that passage.

How about a spiritual interpretation? After all, the Bilbe is a spiritual book, inspired by the Holy Spirit for our spiritual growth...

To be established in the present truth ( II Peter 1:12). Truth evolves as you continue interpreting the Bible with the Bible.
