My friend used to put rice cereal in her baby's formula bottles from 2 months on. He didn't sleep through the night until he was just a little over a year old.

ORIGINAL: alaskajamaica did anyone else start rice cereal? Did you? (hoping you gave it separately) Be aware though, that rice cereal has less nutritional value than breastmilk and is not likely to boost anything at all.

How are you defining sleeping through the night. Generally that means 6 hours. ALl 3 of mine were doing at least that by a week old. No cereal needed.

ORIGINAL: crankius Our babies were on "routines", and both slept through the night by 7 weeks (starting with 7 hour stretches and growing into 11 hours). They did have growth spurts where during the day they would eat a lot more, but their night sleeping stayed consistent. All 4 of ours as well. I am a big believer in flexible "routines" - I had to to keep my sanity. It worked for us, they have all slept extremely well.

In real life, I have only met one person whose children did not sleep through the night on a consistent basis by 4 months. Only on this thread have I "met" people whose children were still nursing through the night up to age 1 and beyond. Since you asked I will tell you that in my opinion (and it is only my opinion- and that of my doctor) that often babies wake more out of a habit then actual hunger. Sure, every baby goes through growth spurts, teething, not feeling well, thing which cause them to wake up. However, once they are used to that midnight snack, they will continue to wake up. It is up to the mom whether or not they want to break that habit. Some moms don't care and are fine with it. I, however, needed my sleep, especially when the number of kids grew. For me, months of sleeping through the night was well worth the few days of crying that it took them to break the habit.
