techne -> so sublime...(lookin' fer quotes) (8/25/2008 1:12:33 PM)

i'm working on a project exploring the relationship(s) between the following:

1. "the sublime",
2. representations of landscape, and
3. the nature of photography (i.e. it lies)

could anyone recommend any relevant books, articles and (most coveted) quotes on the subject(s)?

please?

My personal fave: “There is only one step from the sublime to the ridiculous.” - Napoleon Bonaparte

As far as photos lying - I would check out some quotes regarding the program Adobe Photoshop. Since any photo can be modified to look differently than it was originally captured thru editing, the already deceitful nature of photography is now outright untrustworthy. [:D]

Edmund Burke wrote a longish essay on the subject of the sublime. I am too tired to look it up but I will look for references later if you would like. There is also a late 18th century female writer who wrote quite extensively on the sublime but I cannot quite now recall her name.
