to share a story..VERY important to read first post before answering
| It shows that invitations should go through the mail. |
| It helped teach me I couldn't always protect others' feelings. |
| The original girl hadn't been taught how to keep a promise. |
| The teacher made a bad decision that day. |
| It shows to invite the whole class, or all boys or all girls. |
| It's just one of those "bumps" along the way in childhood. |
| Invitations shouldn't be a grammar lesson. |

ORIGINAL: OneOfHisJewels Plus, no offense, but that statement to me came across as a little harsh considering I was only in 3rd grade at the time. It's not like I did it that way NOW. Remember I am a parent, thinking as a parent, and posting as a parent. If I'd been your mother, I'd have considered it my responsibility to make sure things went smoothly, I wouldn't have left it to you to try and work it all out on your own and keep everyone happy. Oh, ok, gotcha! I'm not a parent, so though I try, I am lost to that perspective at times.

No, (LOL) but we all have those unfortunate events. Thank goodness we survive and learn life lessons. Once my husband when he was little, looked like the kid on the Christmas story had an unfortunate event. He was in the first grade, and wet his pants, and borrowed the schools underware( who hasn't raise your hand), well anyway his mom washed the borrowed undies, sent them back the next day with husband on school bus in a brown paper sack. The bus had a wreck, some big girl grabbed the bag and ask " What is in here", she threw the underware around the bus to others, laughing at him. The moral of this story is, his mom, when she could should have took the undies back in person, not sent them in a paper bag. My husband shoud have hid the bag in back-pack. quote:

I think it was just an unfortunate event. LOL, did you draw from the title of the book seres, "A series of unfortunate events?"

The rule at our school is that when passing out invites at school it's either the whole class or all boys or all girls. Any of my kids' friends that are in other classrooms get a special invite either by mail or tucked into their take home folder either by me or their teacher. My girls tend to also invite their girl scout friends and those invites are handed out at a girl scout meeting. IF only certain children are invited I either mail the invites or make phone calls directly to the child's parents. My eldest had a sleepover party last year when she was in 4th grade and she was only allowed to invite 4 girls. She made the phone calls and talked to the girls and then handed the phone off so I could give details to the parents. I think she brought handmade invites to school the next day for those girls. My dd has just a few really good friends so she managed to hide it from the rest of the girls rather well. Unfortunately - in my youngest ds's grade there are a bunch of birthdays the SAME week as his. It is very difficult to schedule a party that is NOT conflicting with someone else's party. It's not unusual that we get at least 3 or 4 invites over a two week time span! This is also at the END of the school year. So we postponed his party til after school let out. I handed out invites to the ENTIRE class plus some extras three days before school got out. I asked for RSVP's by phone and we received 3 phone calls - ALL from children who wanted to come but could not for a variety of totally valid reasons (one of his friends' parents had already purchased plane tickets for the entire family to visit family in Germany) 1 child called and said they could come and after that call we received NO other calls and NO one came, except my ds's best friend - and the only child to tell me he was coming. Because no one showed up and no one called my child was devastated, especially since he had been to everyone else's party in the previous month. So in lieu of a party we took ds's best friend and ds and the rest of the family and went to the Zoo, then out for ice cream and then to a local history museum. Then we came home and made ds's favorite supper with cake afterwards. We then allowed his friend to sleepover. Next year I think I'll have to plan WAY ahead and just plan on letting him have a sleepover with a couple of friends instead of inviting lots of kids. I'm done with big full class or all girl/all boy parties after about 3rd grade. Blessings, Garsy

lol That is a way of putting it, light. You're right. Unfortunately we often learn the most significant lessons through the school of hard knocks. Ouch. I know most of what I've learned has been through that particular route.

ORIGINAL: OneOfHisJewels I do think a Sweet Sixteen party would be a lovely thing to do for a daughter, though. Well my girls are like an eighth Mexican and they better NOT ask for a Quinceanera. Kali, the 7 year old has already mentioned it because she went to Ariel's Quince, and I was like no way. While I think that is a beautiful and it was one fun party, it was like a mini wedding. I so totally would love to give them a sweet 16 so we will see. I have no clue what to do with Jake anymore. His birthday kind of gets missed because it is right around memorial day and then his dad takes him on vacation for a week, but over two weekends, so by the time we get him back, it is like a month later after alternating weekends. He still hasn't even had a family party yet. Anyway, I think as far as invitations go, my choice for the girls is up through 5th grade, they invite all the girls in the class or they don't have a party. If they had smaller class sizes, I would let them invite the entire class til like 3 grade, but their classes are too big. Last year, Kali did a princess party and I didn't realize how many parents had parties for their kids, but didn't invite all of the girls. The teacher actually thanked me for doing that and made a bit of a deal over it. But that being said, Kali didn't get invited to every party and had no clue there were parties she missed so I like our school's policy of handing out invites only if you invite all of the class or at least that gender. Otherwise mail them.
