My great aunt went nuts on me because I said my "goodness gracious alive" because she believed I was taking the Lord's name in vain.

I must admit that I kinda cringe when I see or hear Oshkosh B’Gosh.

Maybe that too is in the concsious of each individual.

We can all go completely nutzoid on all this stuff and still miss the mark. Certainly, there are many terms and words I will not use, but most have to remain inside my own personal boundaries, because they are my own convictions.

But there are plenty of people who say they are believers and yet can curse someone without using a single swear word and walk away enveloped in a huge smog of self-righteousness. These are a major puzzle to me.

It is all a matter of intent. I can say, "Cheese and rice!", and it could be sinful based on the reason I said it. Just my humble opinion.

I do have a problem with people who say that alcohol is wrong while they drink copious amounts of caffiene-laced drinks (to the point of having withdrawal symptoms if they cut it out.

LOL - I was right with you up until this point.

To quote the punch line from an old joke, "now you've quit preachin' and started meddlin'."

(For the record, caffeine is a vitamin. Vitamin deficiencies are known to cause physical ailments, which is the reason I get the headaches, OK?)

I use caffeine for medical purposes. New research has found that people who drink four or more cups per day reduce their risk of diabetes and heart attack.

Great! I get my first pot in by 10:00 am, so I should be good to go.

Let's step back a minute... I am not saying that caffeine should be banned or that people shouldn't drink it. I drink coffee sometimes. And yes, some drink it for medical reasons too.

But there are many people who will condem the drinking of alcohol while being totally addicted to caffeine.

Talking of only legal substances here and for people who are generally healthy ~ there are very few things when taken in moderation that will cause us harm. It is when things are taken to excesse or when we become dependant on them to get us through the day that they are harmful. Naturally there are some people who need to avoid certain foods and drinks ~ I am not suggesting that someone with a nut allergy would be fine eating a few nuts.

A little alcohol now and again probably isn't going to kill you. A lot may well, if not straight away, eventually.

I think we all understood the point - just took a brief humorous detour for a bit. (At least I thought it was funny....)

I concur!

Absolutely, hypocrisy is commonplace. Repetition of the plank in the eye disease affects nearly all of us to some extent or the other. That is one of the reasons that this discussion is so involved. We can examine just drinking alcohol, but the reactions are not constrained to that by any means. It is merely a common example of how something can offend anyone, and it is an impossibility to not offend at some point or other.

I suppose that what controls you is the fundamental question, now, isn't it? Actually, not a bad way to frame the question.

This sounds like a good plan, IMO.

My response to people like this is "Are you writing a book" if not you don't need that information. If you are writing a book just leave that chapter out.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your glass of wine or even the second glass of wine at night. And this from a non-drinker.
