Good Monday Morning Everyone

Hey..that get-together sounds fun!! Lets see what we can figure out.
I would be intrested. Just can't take off too much work days. I don't get paid for them. Sigh..
A Fall get-together sounds like a nice drive, with all the color's on the tree's.
I'm sure I could talk Pam into comeing along with me. That way I won't have to drive alone.

Good morning, Barb . . . I trust you had a good weekend? Yes, the get-together DOES sound nice. My availability would depend on the situation with Garrett, though.

We're starting a kids crusade today. I do pray it's successful. We're hoping to get more kids in our church, and have tried various things for Sundays, none of which have worked well, so Pastor decided to try this Wednesday night thing. Our plan is to start holding kids services on Wednesday night.

I need to make some phone calls pertaining to that, then go to the gym. While I'm in town I'll go by the church and finish fitting the curtains on the puppet theater -- that is, if Pastor has the theater finished.

We usually loose church attendence with our teens/young adults. When they are between the ages of 17-25 years. Wish we could figure out something to attract them during them years. But they usually come back when they start haveing children.

My week-end was very full again. Held a rummage sale by my daughters house on Sat. Did'ent do so well with my stuff tho.
Then Sunday we celebrated Isabelle and Brandi's birthday.
Brandi (my oldest child) was 30 years old yesterday, and her daughter, Isabelle, is 2 years old today
This grandma had to call her up today and sing Happy Birthday over the phone. I bought her a dolly and a doll buggy. Also got her some childrens garden tools with her Dora garden gloves.(she loves helping Brandi in the garden)

We could plan to get together on a Saturday/Sunday and use the Friday and Monday for travelling. For those who are working, it would mean fewer days off work. If autumn is an appealing time for folks, perhaps sometime in October would work? The kids are settled into school and you Americans aren't busy with Thanksgiving preparations yet.

Barb, your post about kids coming back to church when they start having kids gives me hope. Maybe that's when my two eldest will decide they want to follow God.

I'm scrubbing the basement stairs (taking a break at the moment). We throw wet laundry down the stairs--supposedly to the basket at the turn of the stairs but stuff always misses--and because there is grit in the paint to keep us from slipping and falling, the dirt collects more easily and is much harder to clean. I haven't cleaned the basement stairs in ages so I'm getting a very good workout. And I'm seeing places on the walls along the stairway that are also in dire need of cleaning. So I've cleaned five steps and one corner of the wall. I need a break and then I will return to the task.

I just looked at a map. Wisconsin and Missouri border Iowa. If Jeanie can come, so does Minnesota. (I guess it does whether Jeanie can come or not.) I'm thinking Iowa would be most central.

I've done a bit of investigating. I think Pam/Barb, Linda/Ginny and I are the ones who are on the far reaches. Dee, though further west, is closer to Iowa than Linda and Ginny, I think, and Jeanie certainly is. If others in this thread are interested in joining us, I'm not sure where you live so I've been basing estimations on those I've listed here.

I looked at two cities that seemed central: Omaha and Des Moines. (Yeah, I know Omaha is in Nebraska, but it's right on the border and the interstate goes right past it.)

To get to Omaha would take (according to maps.google.com):

  • Pam and Barb about 8 hours
  • Linda and Ginny about 7 hours
  • Me about 9 1/2 hours

To get to Des Moines would take:

  • Pam and Barb just over 6 hours
  • Ginny and Linda just under 7 hours
  • Me 10 1/2 hours
  • Dee 5 hours
  • Jeanie just under 4 hours

Des Moines seems the most central. Those who live further away (such as Bill) could always fly in if interested.

I haven't a clue what there is in Des Moines worth seeing or even if we want to do anything other than sit and chat. Here is a link to check out:
http://www.seedesmoines.com/asp/visitors/attractions.asp?Cat=ALL

http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191501933-des_moines_vacations-i lists the following as the top ten things to do:
Des Moines Botanical Center
Blank Park Zoo
Iowa State Capitol (said to be one of the nation's finest)
Mathias Ham House
Des Moines Art Center
A. H. Blank Golf Course
Jordan House
another golf course
Hoyt Sherman Place
Heritage Art Gallery

The covered bridges of Madison County are just south of Des Moines.

Link

Either of those places would probably be doable by me if hubby could get off work that weekend at least. Or better yet if hubby and my oldest could get off work so we could all come. No way am I leaving my 17 yo at home alone for a weekend. No way now how.

He could take the kids to the zoo, or whatever while I did my thing.

That looks interesting, Dee. For that matter, perhaps we could find someplace to stay near there. We don't have to go to a city.

Good Tuesday morning, everyone. It's going to be a busy day, but at least this week is cooler and for that I am so very thankful!

We have an appointment this morning with a disabled veterans rep to get the process started for Bill to get VA medical benefits after he retires -- well, he could have been getting them all along, but we've never tried. That appointment is at 9:30. Then at 1:30 I have a doctor's appointment for my yearly med check. I'll be glad to get home from that, but won't be home long before I will need to leave again to go to the Kids Crusade tonight.

Only 5 kids showed up last night, but it was (IMHO) very bad timing to have it the week the kids started back to school, and last night was open house for the kids & their parents. The pastor has put some work into this, but I don't know what his reasoning was for having it this particular week. Anyway, in spite of it being only 5 kids, one little girl in particular made it all worthwhile. Her name is Jessica, and she's four years old. She sat on the front row with the pastor's wife and granddaughter who is 1½. She was entranced from the first moment, and giggled so loudly and so delightedly at everything! We got so tickled listening/watching her. The pianist, hidden behind a 'puppet theater' sang in her little puppet voice to a synthesizer, and this just delighted all the kids --- Debbie is very good at this, even tho it's been years since she's done it.

Pastor dressed up in a graduation cap & gown (likely borrowed from our latest high school graduate, Joe), and came out as Dr. LivingSTONE to give a whimsical rendition of creation. He's a big man, and used exaggerated gestures while fussing with the mortarboard tassel hanging in his face -- the kids found this hysterical, and were very entertained. After the story, we had them do some crafts then fed them snacks. All in all, it was a good evening, and I'm looking forward to more kids being there tonight.

The trip sounds like lots of fun -- and I'd love to see the covered bridges of Madison County.

Please pray. Ds3 has not had a regular job since Christmas, though he is living on his own. He's had the odd job that lasted a day or two or even a week but those have been few and far between. Finally he got a job with a large company doing the thing he loves to do the most. He was to start yesterday. But when he got up, he had such a terrible allergy attack he had to go to Emergency and he didn't know how to contact the person who hired him. He's lost the job. So this afternoon I will be going with him to help him apply for welfare. This has upset me more than I thought it would (I knew his going on welfare was a possibility). Please pray for him, that he WILL get a job that he can do and that, until then, that God will provide all his needs, whether it's through welfare or some other means. Thank you.

Thank you, Dee. I finally got to see him briefly this evening and he seemed to be doing better. I finally told him that I'm worried about him and he'd better answer me everytime I phone, or I'm going to be asking the caretaker to let me into his apartment. He didn't argue with either my fears that he might harm himself or my insistence that he answer the phone, which is good. And I took him a large container of fresh blueberries, some peaches and romaine so he'll have some healthy and yummy food to eat.

Maggie, I'll keep DS3 in my prayers today.

I am using tough love on my son. For weeks now the socks have not been washed. I've asked DS3 to turn his socks the right way and scrub off the grass that is on most of them. And I've not washed any socks. I had decided they would wait until dear son figured out I wouldn't be doing this chore for him anymore. Now he's started school and has football practice at 6:00 in the morning, it's his first year at the high school and he's adjusting. He doesn't get home until 7:00 pm from all the things he has to do with football and last night he was so tired he went straight to bed. BUT I am not doing his socks!

He told me this morning that he has none to wear and when am I washing them. And I reminded him that they are waiting for him to prepare for washing.

Barb, working tires me out. There's no way I can do ALL the housework, laundry, meal planning, preparation, grocery shopping, etc. without any help from my family. The house is a wreck because no one did anything when I was sick with my abscess teeth. No one cleaned up anything. I have to train my family to help by taking care of some things they should be responsible for. For instance, putting their dishes in the dishwasher instead of piling them up in the sink. Making sure their laundry is ready to be washed so all I have to do is sort and load. Picking up their litter.

Ginny

Good Wen. Morning Everyone

Maggie, sent up a prayer for your son. Glad you got to visit with him last night.

Ginny, you just keep that "tough love" going. No reason he can't put his socks right side out. And their is nothing wrong with haveing the kids help out with the chores. I had a regular chore list going for my kids when all five lived at home. I just could'ent do it all. Now that I am home during the day, and only have one child liveing here, I sort of do it all tho. But if I need help with something, all I have to do is ask. I do Cody's laundry..he is suppose to put it away. Usually once a week I will ask him to take the pile of his clean/folded clothes, and put them away. Otherwise they would sit on his chair forever.
He also takes out the trash when asked and anything else I ask him to do. School has'ent started here yet...but football practice started this week. Every morning from 7:30-12:15 he is there.

Hi Dee, how you doing?

Well today is my Katie's 19th birthday. She came home yesterday to spend the day with me. Then last night all the kids and grandkids came over for cake. They brought her gifts to open even, and we sang Happy Birthday and the grandkids blew out the birthday candles.
She was here when I had to go pick up Cody from football practice. I left her here with the daycare kids. When I got home she came out to the van with her hand all wrapped up in a bloody washrag. I asked her waht happened. Guess when I first left she went out to James truck to get her laundry. She slamed the truck door on her finger! Her pretty white shirt was all splattered with blood because she ran around the yard shakeing it. Poor kid. It looks like she will loose the nail. It's all black and blue, and bleeding from under the nail. And it has to be her right hand..the one she write's with. So neadless to say I had to drive her to the DMV to get her licence renewal, because she did'ent want to drive by herself, and use the hand. It worked out alright because I needed to get my prescription in that town anyways. So we did alittle shopping while we were there.
But she did her laundry while she was here, and I made supper for her and James. It sure is nice when they come back home for a visit tho. I missed her.

Ouch, bummer for Katie to get banged up on her birthday. Did she get her shirt clean?

I'm OK Barb, I was up earlier because I woke up when my daughter had to go to work (dad took her though), but thankfully I was able to go back to sleep for a while.

I had to quit doing my oldest daughter's socks for a while; hers always ended up in the wash not turned right. I'd remind her and turn them myself, but that did no good. So I finally quit doing them unless they were turned properly in the laundry. I figured everyone else in the family could get their socks in the laundry the right way, she could too.

LOL...I just wash them the way they get thrown in there. When I fold them I will turn them the right way. If they don't get clean...well to bad.

I'm over worked today. Have my two grandsons over. Boy..they keep me running. So all together I have five children here...oldest being three yrs old..youngest being three months old. And three of them are my grandkids. The other two are my great neices.
The bad part is I have to drag them all along when I pick-up Cody in 10 minutes. Ever try loading five babies/toddlers into car seats?
But when I get back it's nap-time for all of them

Good afternoon Barb, Ginny, Maggie & Dee.

Ginny, stick to your guns . . he'll grow real tired of wearing dirty socks, or going without them. I don't bother to turn mine & Bills, but a teenager can get theirs really dirty, and I don't want all that grass & junk in my washer, so yeah, I'd insist they turn them.

Barb, sounds like you definitely have your hands full! Ouch! for Katie -- on her birthday, no less! That had to really HURT! Wish her a late happy birthday for me, & give her a hug for her owee.

Garrett showed up at 7:45 this morning . . . I was not even awake. Bill & I had the awfulest night trying to sleep -- if one us wasn't awake the other was, and I think most of the time we both were . . . I was awake quite a bit early in the night, then woke again at 5:00 & didn't go back to sleep until after the alarm went off at 6:30. Then I guess I REALLY went to sleep cuz I knew nothing else until they knocked on my door with GArrett . . . . . but I was so glad to see him --- Gosh I've missed him!

He & I sat outside for a bit early this morning, then he 'helped' me water my flowers, after which he had to come in and get some dry clothes on . . . later we made a trip to the bank and by McD's for my coffee -- figure I'm gonna need it today. I'm hoping to take him with me to the kids crusade at church tonight. It's our last night of it, adn it's going to be good. Right now, tho, it's time for our nap(s)

Yeah, that's what I did too. I haven't done kids' laundry for ages and even dh has been doing his own for the past several years.

I cannot immagine loading five babies/toddlers into a car. I think I'd find a way around that if at all possible.

Hi Dee!

Linda, I'm sorry to hear you didn't get enough sleep last night but so cool that you've got Garrett back. He's such a sweetie.

Hi Barbi!

Well ds3 seems to be doing okay. I called him around 11:40 to invite him out for lunch. He was sleeping and said to call back in an hour so I did. He was still sleeping so I said I'd call him back an hour later and THAT time I said, "I'll be at your place in 7 minutes to pick you up," and didn't give him an option. He was out at the car within 12 minutes of when I called. I was impressed. We went out for lunch. After lunch we saw that one of my tires was flat and he quickly offered to change it for me. I'm feeling better about things though I told him I will be riding him closely for the next while. He rolled his eyes but didn't object.

Thanks for all the support everyone.

I didn't get started on my way home from work until 5:40 this evening from main campus an hour away from my home. Linda I came by your house but it was 6:30 by the time I got there and your van was gone. I figured you had gone to church. Was going to share my notebook with you so you could copy my notes on Swaggart.

Made it back home at 7:00 and then right away hubby wanted me to take my son to Wal Mart for school supplies so we went there. I am finally home and its 9:00 and I am tired. Hubby now wants me to fix him something to eat. Seems the chicken noodle soup I made for him before I left for the store got spilled when he asked my 5 year old grandson to bring it to him. Go figure.

I have to think he really really needs to lose weight if he is that tired that he has to ask the 5 year old to wait on HIM instead of the other way around. He says he is not feeling well. I can see that but he still needs to try.

I broke bad and bought Zak a pair of socks at the store while I was buying supplies for him.

We are babysitting our grandsons this evening so i got do nuts for breakfast in the morning. Everyone will be getting ready for school and me for work at the same time.

Barb, I felt sorry for your daughter. Her finger probably throbbed that night. Zak did the same thing with his finger a few weeks ago and it got all black, pus built up under the nail and then he would squeezed the pus out. It hurt bad for a while but it is fine now. Too bad about this happening on her birthday but am glad she was home with you so you could enjoy her company.

Linda, I know you enjoyed your day with Garrett. Hope you get a better nite's rest tonight and Bill too.

Hi Dee, Barbi, and Maggie.

Ginny
