zoebob -> handme down computer wants AOL (8/10/2008 8:25:43 PM)

I have a computer that my aunt gave me for my kids. When I try to go online it says "Internet explorer by AOL" and seems to want an AOL password. I don't use AOL and have high speed cable. What do I need to do to get it to just go online nad skip all this AOL stuff? Do I need to delete this internet explorer and reinstall or something?

Uninstall any of the aol software. Its junk

Go to tools -> internet options - > connections -> lan settings in ie IE

Set it to connect via lan

delete any dial up connections

If your running windows xp on the laptop go into control panel and uninstall anything related to aol. If not then aol will hide itself and cause you problems later. Second is to defrag the harddrive. then go thru the internet setup routine.

The computer is at my parents' house right now and I haven't been there to work on it again. It is a desktop and running on WIndows 98.

What is it with you and computers?? You need to be firm and show them who is boss! As the Human in the house YOU are supposed to be telling THEM what to do! Not the other way around. That computer doesn't know that AOL isn't the best thing for it... that they need to put away childish things and and go with the path that will lead it to the desired location. Be more assertive! Be firm! Repeat after me, "I am the human here and as long as you are in my house you WILL do as you are told, or it is to Freecycle with you!"[8D]

Someone gave me a pc recently. It is not powerful enough for XP so I reformatted and installed W98 se and it was running great until I was goofing around and installed AOL.

It is now NOT running well at all so... I'll be reformatting and re-installing 98. I tried Ubuntu and didn't like it.

My problem is finding the disks to reinstall some of these programs. I did get my other computer working though.

I haven't been able to get over to my parents and play withi this for a while but when I do...

If I delete anythign that says AOL and delete my web browser then how do I download a new one if I can't get online to download? Can I download one to a memory stick and run it from there? I was looking at Firefox 2.0. It says you have to be online to install. Or can I download it here onto a memory stick and then install it from that?

My husband was my IT guy and now that he's not in the picture I'm on my own

Miss Giggles -> RE: handme down computer wants AOL (8/16/2008 7:08:52 PM)

You can download firefox onto a thumb drive as the installer is very small. Firefox 2 is fine but version 3 is out now. I'm not sure if it will install if you aren't online.

With Internet Explorer you have to be online and it should be a high speed connection as it is a pretty big file.

zoebob -> RE: handme down computer wants AOL (8/16/2008 7:29:04 PM)

Well, this computer only has windows 98. Will Firefox 3 work on that?

ETA: This may be a dumb question but when it says you have to have an interntet connection does thatmean you have to have a browser already installed or just have the internet plugged into the computer

Miss Giggles -> RE: handme down computer wants AOL (8/16/2008 8:34:19 PM)

You have to have the connection plugged into the computer. You can't remove Internet explorer from Windows but you can upgrade the version.

Firefox 2 will work. Firefox 3 won't

Firefox 2 requirements
