How sad that the American marathon runner (woman) had to drop out so quickly due to injury. I hope she's ok.

The interviews they have with the athletes sooooo get on my nerves.

"How does it feel to break the world record?"
What do you think?

"Tell us what you were thinking as you won."
Uhm, I was happy.

Arg! Oh course they are happy they won.

I pretty much fast forward through them all.

I agree. I mean, how could the 'Lightening Bolt' know that he was on course to break the record?

Thank you. I haven't heard how she's doing (but then a couple of the Brits both sustained injuries and I haven't heard how they are either). She, along with a few others, just seemed to be in so much agony.

Awww...

There's an American shooter (Matt someone) who was set for gold in Athens ~ as long as he hit the target with his final shot. He hit the target, but it wasn't his! The Croation woman's commentator (who was also a commetitor) went to offer her sympathy...

And now they're married.

I think she won gold. He was in medal position before his last shot ~ which went wrong again and he dropped to fourth. He says he'd do it all again because she's worth 1,000,000 medals.

Gotta love a love story.

I guess Deena's foot is broken and she didn't know it.

I guess there's a few days before the men's marathon. (I don't like the olympics website). Its not until next week , one of the last events.

One of the runners is an evangelical Christian (Ryan Hall) so if he wins will they censor him ? he said he's running for God.

Hopefully they'll show the triathlon, supposed to start tonight although you wouldn't know it from the nbc website since they are boohooing cause swimming's over and gymnastics is almost over, so they are stuck with the traditional olympic sports like track and field and there are ratings will go down.

People don't like the drug factor and the fact that the athletes are now mostly professionals who devote full-time to their sport. In the old days (pre-'84 olympics), the US athletes were mostly college students (especially the basketball team), and for most of them it was their one shot at glory. It was more pure, at least on our side. It was always the American kids going up against the drugged up, amateur-in-name-only Russians and East Germans, who always seemed to have a judge or two in their pockets.

Nodding head firmly in agreement! If some of these folks had to hold down full-time jobs & train, like those who competed before the 1984 games, they wouldn't be able to compete. Just think about those from the 1932 or 1948 games. WOW!

Think about Jesse Owens sticking it to Adolf Hitler, or the American college all-star hockey team beating the professional USSR team in '80. Try NOT to think about the Russians stealing the '72 basketball gold from us, or how the U.S. sprinters that year got dq'd because somebody changed their heat start times w/out telling them.

My apologies, m'lady!. How presumptuous of me... just never met a woman who like Foghorn Leghorn. It's never even come up in conversation
So as a woman, what do you think of the human interest stories?

I had to watch it on the Canadian channel because NBC wasn't going to broadcast it except online, and I wasn't sure how long the triathlon was (the ironmans can go on for 14 hours +). I wish the course took them more out on the road than a loop in front of the spectators though.

I did see the crash though, ouch.

So it ended at midnight eastern time which was my limit.

That crash looked bad ~ they never said how the casualties were. I know one was holding her wrist.

It is a pity there were so many laps, but I guess they had to take into account the roads and hills in the area. I think in 2012 it's going to be in Hyde Park and that will be pretty.

The canadian girl did break her wrist. I think the others are ok, just bruised and shocked. They're taught how to fall and they weren't on concrete.

They may be taught how to fall, but some of them seemed to travel a fair distance ~ and learning something is no substitute for the real thing ~ things like that can shake the most experienced up. I hope the Canadian wrist isn't badly broken (ie that she doesn't need an op to reset it etc).

Yup, straight over the handle bars, I saw that! Ouch! Eeven if you know how to fall and have been taught you can't always execute what you've been taught on the spur of the moment. It takes a lot of drills to get it into your muscle memory and I don't imagine it would be that big a deal with cycling. People don't usually fall cycling. It's unexpected so falling would not be so natural.

How is it that Cheng Fei can land on her knees in the second vault and get a higher score than Alicia Sacramone to win the bronze? One of the commentators on NBC called it a "rip off".

I agree.

Possibly difficulty levels and while she landed on her knees, I think there's a set number of points you lose for a bad landing, or any other fault. It may have been the only thing that she lost marks for in that was the landing. Sacramone could have lost marks for different elements of the vault.

No one ever thinks that the approach is important ~ but you can lose marks for that too apparently!

I think that the two marks they're given for each of their jump are averaged too and this may have put her ahead. I think it was a Russian who went before the green light (from the judges saying they were ready) was on and she performed a brilliant jump but scored 0.0 because of it.

I'm confused. Are you talking about gymnastics from recently (today)? I thought they were done with the women's all-around last Thursday.

Yesterday, I was watching the female weight lifter competition, and all I can say is... WHOA!

Last I've checked, the Korean athlete, Jang Miran got the top (gold medal?) honors. I mean, these ladies are built for this sort of sport... and I'm impressed!

They are through with the team and individual competetions. Now they are competing on individual apratus. For the wome it's the vault, uneven bars, floor and beam.

As agaptos said, it has to do with the start value of the skill they are doing. This new scoring system is so confusing .
