Does anyone have a SilPat? I love mine but it feels really greasy, all the time. I've tried washing it in the sink of water, and just by squirting Dawn on it, and even tried the dishwasher.

I like it a lot, but just don't know how to take care of it. Any suggestions?

That's the silicone baking stuff?

I use those professionally. Wash in mild detergent and let air dry. I wouldn't think yours really are greasy. The material has a sort of slick surface. Did they always feel like they do now or is this new?

Well, when I wipe a clean finger on it I can see a smear of grease.

I do love the thing, and bought some for baking breads and such. I used the sil pat on a cookie sheet and put chicken on it. It didn't stick and really turned out good but I just can't get it clean.

If I scrubbed it with a scour pad would it wreck it?

Kathy, did you use a degreaser? Dawn should do the trick. You know what really works good is that dawn that is in the pump where you wet your sponge and put one pump on to do your dishes. Do you know what I am talking about? That takes grease off of things really good. If you use that and a plastic scouring pad, I am sure that will clean it and not wreck it.

I have heard of it but I've not tried it yet. That is a good idea.

Kath....IME silicone works best for things like desserts and pastries, not meats. If you plan to do lots of meats, etc, I suggest you invest in a stone. I LOVE my two cookie sheet stones from pampered chef....nothing sticks to them after they are seasoned (and it doesn't take much to season them).

Kath, I'm no help . . . initially, I didn't even know what you were talking about. [:D]

I never would have thought to do meat on it. How about, keep that one for meat and get another one for bread/pastry?[sm=icon_smile_approve.gif]

Did you put Dawn straight onto it? That's what you may have to do. Other than that, I have no idea. I wouldn't use anything but plastic on it. No steel wool, etc.[&o]

silpat care instructions HERE

quote:

Easy to clean!:

Wipe the SilpatŪ with a damp, soft sponge, then rinse with clean water.
Shake to remove excess water and dry in open air.
A weak solution of detergent or soap may be used if needed.
Note: the oily feeling after washing is normal.

Do not!:

Do not use scrapers or brushes to clean the SilpatŪ
Do not cut the SilpatŪ or ON the SilpatŪ
Do not fold the SilpatŪ
Do not grease the SilpatŪ

Caution!:

Never use a cut or ripped SilpatŪ as glass weave could migrate to the food.
Please avoid the use of automatic dishwashers, as they may harm the SilpatŪ

bolding is mine. The info is taken from the link above. Hope this helps Kath! =)

Actually, I did buy two, so I wouldn't have to go buy another one when this one wore out. That is a good idea though.

I like to 'oven fry' chicken and the silpat keeps it from sticking and the crust turns out nice.

Thanks Gina! :)

I did run it though the dishwasher this last time. [&:] It doesn't seem wrecked. Here's hoping.
