Groups subbing members??? (Full Version)

I read in a different thread that BFA played a show and bass singer Jeremy Lile wasnt there, but was getting married.
.
I would be terribly disappointed to go see a group and one of the members not be there, especially if I had traveled along way. I can see subbing a piano player or drummer, but one of the vocalists?? Do the groups just not do thier solo songs, or does the fill in do them? I have never experienced this, so I am unfamiliar with how it works.
I confess I am a bit taken aback. I guess we need to check with the groups not only to be sure they are going to be there, but that all the members are!!

I went to see the Kingdom Heirs at Dollywood once when Steve was out from having gall bladder surgery. Josh {former lead singer with the Florida Boys whose last name escapes me right now} filled in for Steve. They didn't sing the songs that feature Steve but did do a few songs to feature Josh. He did an outstanding job and the show was still great.

I don't know. Do you make it to work every single working day of the year? Probably not I know I don't. Things happen that I cannot control and have to miss. The same thing happens to SG Artist. I admire a group that will fulfill their commitments even if they have to use a fill in.

To me, your example is easier to understand than the BFA reason. You'd think groups could make sure that weddings and such were planned for. I mean BFA just had a 2 week summer vacation. What a great opportunity for a wedding!!!

I have seen fill-in singers many times with major groups - and enjoyed them.

For example, I saw Kirk Talley fill in with the Cathedrals one night when Ernie Haase was sick and it was great - a blast from the past. Also, Roger Bennett filling in for the recently deceased Glen Payne was something I was privileged to see.

Sometimes things just happen and people fill in. Jeremy probably had his wedding date scheduled before he joined BFA.

Your idea of calling ahead is a good one. As the Singing News recommends, please call and check before traveling long distances.

And I do understand Illnesses and unforseen situations. Its just something like a wedding??!!!??
That I dont understand. Not that occasionally someone would be physically unable to sing or have a family emergency.

So he needed to plan his wedding around his fans? I know he probably loves his fans, but he has a life too, you know.

Yeah, I definately will. Jeremy is my favorite BFA member. If I had drove 100 miles to see them, and him not be there to sing "Save Me a Seat" and "Jesus Will Pick You Up" that would really dampen the evening for me.!!!

That would be Josh Garner. And I agree, he did a great job filling in for Steve.

He may have planned it ahead, but he has been with them for well over a year. You'd think that in that time, he or the group could have figured something out. Since they were just a week or so back from a 2 week vacation, you'd think the group could have came together to work thier vacation out around his wedding. I'm not putting the blame on him, just saying that it would be awfully disappointing. I wonder if he only had to miss the one show, or if it was several for a honeymoon and all. Please dont think I'm bashing, just wondering if bettter planning all the way around could have been done.

I was blown away when I got to see them in concert with him. We were in the 3rd row at a small church on the bass side, so he was almost in our laps. Loved it. I dont think CD does him justice at all. He is very good live, especially the real low note he hits at the end of King Jesus

Jeremy and Nikki have been engaged for a long time...yes, since before he joined BFA.

It does sound like they did their planning. They had someone to replace the missing singer. Things do happen, people die, get sick, have babies, have family emergency's, & even get married. No one person can be expected to be there evey time the group takes the stage, but you will always find someone singing the missing person's part & usually doing it well.

I also would think you might want to call ahead to make sure that all of the regular singers will be there singing when you attend a concert.

I totally agree. He sounds like he's way back in the background rather than one of the 4 main voices on the CD.

He's very talented and one of the good guys for sure.[:)]

Amen. It's not the group's responsibility to let everyone know when a sub will be there. They've got enough on their plate. If the fact that a sub was there for one night upsets you, I'm sorry. But I don't see the big deal.

I see what you're saying and I somewhat agree. If I drove all the way down to Dollywood to see the Kingdom Heirs and Arthur Rice wasn't there, then I'd be somewhat disappointed. On the other hand I would understand that he had his reason and if the fill in was a quality singer (such as Josh Garner) then I'd still enjoy the show.

I can agreee with that last statement. Not the end of the world, but when you go to a concert, you naturally expect to see the people in the group.
I know some people think it was good planning to have a fill in, and it is better than turning into a trio for the night, but seeing how they just had a summer vacation, you'd think te group could have planned thier schedule around the wedding...that's all im saying.

Just maybe there was something on the brides side of the family that made changing the date to an earlier date impossible, or could it have been that this was an important date for the couple and they wanted to be married on this date?

Let Lile take off for his wedding. As a worker, would you want your honeymoon to use up your already scheduled vacation time? No, you'd want to be given your own excused leave of absence for such a special occasion.

Singing gospel music is a job like the rest of us have, and usually a low-paying one as well. They miss over half of their usual family events, they miss church on Sunday. They keep hours unlike any of us at home ever see. Many struggle to be content with their spiritual life because they're on the road so much. Many call this a ministry, but in my opinion, there ain't any ministry to it when many of the so-called "fans" keep passing the plate come love offering time or some of our so-called "promoters" won't pay them their flat. They go home with little to feed their families on a seemingly regular basis anymore.

Now we're complaining because one wants to go on his honeymoon and it's not scheduled to OUR best convenience???

Sounds like we really have the right to complain, don't we?
