Almost 2 years ago I saw Gold City, when Steve was unable to sing.
His sub was Jay Parrack (Kind of hard to beat THAT, huh?)

About a year later, I saw Gold City again, when Steve would not even TRY to talk...but his singing was great.

A few months ago, the last time I saw GC, Steve was the BEST I had ever heard him.
I talked to him after, and he told me...."Jim, I've been HEALED".
He didn't have to convince me.....

When you sing for a living, your voice is your most precious asset.

After reading alot of the posts, I realize that, yeah there probably were circumstances, and I'm sure they "tried" to work this out so that it didnt happen.. Still I would be upset, but I really do understand that stuff happens.
I would be less disappointed with a sub than just leaving that part out. I mean how weird would a quartet sound without the bass, especially singing songs that need it.
A question for any who saw them with no bass, did they just re-arrange the songs, or did they not do songs that had a large bass part?

The only odd thing I have seen is one night when the Kingsmen were at my highschool and they forgot thier mikes, so the second half they had no drums, and did mainly softer harmony songs.

A couple of years ago...more like 3 to 4 years ago...Jeremy Peace had just recently joined the Kingsmen and the Kingsmen and Gold City was scheduled together at the Martin Theater in Douglas, GA. That night, Gold City sang first(Steve Ladd, Johnathan Wilburn, Daniel Riley, and Bill Lawerence) and the Kingsmen(Jeremy Peace, Tim Surrett, Jason Selph, and Ray Dean) followed behind. When the Kingsmen got on stage, Ray told the crowd that their tenor singer, Jeremy Peace, had larginitis and couldnt perform that night so Ray called on Steve Ladd to fill in for Jeremy and Steve sounded awesome on those Kingsmen songs! [:D]

I agree, if you are wanting certain members of a group there, I'd call ahead.

I can see both sides of this conversation. There are times when emergencies happen and substitutions are necessary and last minute. I'd rather have a concert w/ a sub then no concert at all.

However, if it's a planned event, I don't think it's too much trouble for both the promoter and/or the group to announce that they would be performing without group member 'x'. They could even tell the people selling the tickets.

Most groups like BFA have their dates schedule close to a year in advance most times. So with him being new and having his wedding planned already it is easy to see how the two events didn't coincide. Like it was said earlier, I admire any group who continues on with their appointments. When Doug Riley passed away we were suppossed to see Gold City with the Crabb Family and Crossway in Chattanooga. Gold City naturally couldn't be there and that was expected but most groups will fulfill their appointments unless there is a death. You have to admire them and the ones that fill in when certain members can't be there.

Singing gospel music is a job like the rest of us have, and usually a low-paying one as well. They miss over half of their usual family events, they miss church on Sunday. They keep hours unlike any of us at home ever see. Many struggle to be content with their spiritual life because they're on the road so much. Many call this a ministry, but in my opinion, there ain't any ministry to it when many of the so-called "fans" keep passing the plate come love offering time or some of our so-called "promoters" won't pay them their flat. They go home with little to feed their families on a seemingly regular basis anymore.

Now we're complaining because one wants to go on his honeymoon and it's not scheduled to OUR best convenience???

Sounds like we really have the right to complain, don't we?

Yes, I saw Gold City one time without Tim. They didn't have anyone replacing him during that concert. I remember them singing "God's Building A Church" and "When The Holy Ghost Shows Up".... boy you could tell the difference. Gold City just isn't Gold City without a bass singer!

You're making a big deal about groups having a SUB singer. Would'nt you be more disappointed if they just decide to cancel instead?
Give them a brake. They are human and things happen.

If you go to very many concerts you will see subs from time to time. It is just a fact of life. People get sick, things happen, etc. We usually just enjoy the ones that are there. Sometimes it keeps a particular song from being sung, but occasionally it opens the door for a different song featuring the sub. We have also seen a group perform with a member having voice problems. The last time we saw the Dove Bros., they could not sing "I Can Pray" because Jerry Martin was not feeling up to par and McCray said they would not be able to sing it for that reason.
We have seen Derrick Boyd sub for Brion Carter with PSQ, and Tank Tackett "subbing" for Dave McVay with 3 Bridges, and Bill Lawrence subbing for Tim Riley (before he actually replaced him) with Gold City. There are others, but these are the ones which immediately come to mind.

I remember one time when the Kingsmen were in Roanoke. Big Jim Hammel was sick & they had sent him home earlier in the day. Eldrige Fox was not feeling very well at all. They got through part of the first set when Earnie Phillips tried to sing & nothing came out at all. He had completely lost his voice. One of the singers from the local home town group came out on the stage & took over Earne's part. Did very well at subbing & had never praticed with the Kingsmen.

If you are around southern gospel music for long you will see subs in all the groups. It even has happen to our quartet from time to time and we are what most people call part time. We do around 80 dates a year. We have had a sub for our tennor 2 weekends in a row this year brcause of sickness. But I hate to cancel a date so I would rather use a sub. Believe it or not some churches or venues get upset if you cancel even if it is for sickness. About 3 years ago I had to cancel one because of a death and the music minister so of made me feel bad because we cancelled. There is always two sides to the story.

I can do better than that...last year I was scheduled to sing at a church, I got sick a day or so before and lost my voice. The music minister fairly insisted that I come anyway, I did, it was less than good, and he still got mad at me!

Sometimes you just can't win for losing...

I have been there Tafkam. Just last year I had one to insist that we come on because of the advertisement he had did. So we went on with my fevor and all. Even though I had someone to cover for us he didn't want that.

Well, I heard them sing that song at NQC with his solo lines stacked...and that sounded really odd! I guess it would be equally strange to hear the voice without seeing the guy on stage at all.

I saw an interesting Stamps Quartet performance one time. Their bus had broken down in Tennessee. I was in the opening group that particular night.

Ed Hill had stayed with the bus while it was being fixed. JD, Ed Enoch, and Rick Strickland arrived in a car a half hour or so before show time. Mark Lowry was with them as well. Jerry Kelso was already there, having come to the venue in his own vehicle.

The promoter typically had us sing 20-25 minutes on the first half and 10 or so to start the the second. Since Ed Hill wasn't there, they asked us to go ahead and do all of our songs on the first half, followed by intermission. The Stamps began after intermission using our inadequate sound system (two huge Peavey SP-1s for mains and a pair of no name monitors). They'd brought their own mini-disc player and Jerry Kelso played a small upright piano that belonged to the venue. The keyboards were still on the bus.

If you look closely at our mixing board, you can still see where my brother wrote the initials "J D" on a small piece of paper and Scotch taped it under channel 4. (We no longer use the SP-1s, thank goodness!)

When the Stamps took the stage, they were wearing their street clothes. They had the stacks cranked, and avoided any songs where Ed Hill sang melody or had pickup lines. You could hear the baritone part in the stacks, so four-part harmony appeared to be coming out of three people...much like the OTGHQ you mentioned above. Ed Hill got there by the fourth song or so.

The majority of the crowd didn't know Mark Lowry was backstage. He came out and did 15 minutes or so of comedy and ended his segment with "Mary Did You Know?" while Kelso played.

J D did his usual share of comedy as well.

It's probably the most memorable concert I ever attended.

Thanks for such great and colorful stories. I know I started this thread a little upset, and probably more critical than I should have been, but I am starting to understand more about groups. I have never been on the inside and admit that I dont know a ton about the workings of groups, so, I am now better informed about subs.
The closest I have came to seeing a sub, was sub microphones!!!
When the Kingsmen were at my high school about 10 yrs ago, they forgot thier mikes in Asheville. They did a local TV show, and the mikes never made it to the bus. I was helping with the equipment and hanging out with the guys backstage, (actually the place I worked, Arby's was nice enough to let me take about a dozen sandwiches and bunches of fries cokes and sweet teas to feed the group that night) anyway, Greg Fox and I were about 30 seconds away from beginning a mad dash around town trying to buy new mikes, when the group that was going on first offered thier mikes....so all was well.. Greg had to leave after intermission to meet a guy halfway, who was bringing the mikes from NC, cause they were headed from TN north for a tour up there immediately after the concert....Concert was great that night, I recorded it and still watch it alot...

Kinda reminds me of the time we were in Gadsden to see the Old Time Gospel Hour. Robbie Hiner left his piano peddle at home. Had to run over town hunting a music store to find one for him. The store let me buy one for Robbie to use that night and let be carry it back the next moring for a refund. Occaionally groups tend to leave something behind. Makes them like some of the rest of us don't it. [:D]

I've been a huge fan of Brian Free since the first time I saw him with Gold City in April 1982. I have attended hundreds of concerts with Gold City or Assurance within those 26 years, and there has only been one time I've not seen Brian there. It was a Sunday morning a few years ago and the guys had just come off of a cruise the day before. Bill Shivers told me that quite a few people had gotten sick and that Brian had to be taken off the ship in a wheelchair and taken straight to the hospital. Naturally I was very disappointed when I realized he wasn't going to be there. I was organist for the church that Jay Parrack was minister of music at and getting out of a Sunday morning service to go hear Brian Free was as much fun as getting all your wisdom teeth pulled without anesthesia!!!!!!! LOL

A friend of the group drove in from South Carolina and filled in for Brian that morning. I really missed hearing Brian sing, but the rest of the guys sang their heart out and made sure every one in that building got a blessing. I left that morning knowing the guys had given it their all!
