Last year was my most difficult. I wasn't lacking in materials or in desire. I was lacking in support. But I was also lacking in motivating my children. My six year old is like a constant tornado and the four year old follows his brother even though when he's alone he's quiet and easily entertained. No matter what I did I couldn't get them to leave the 10 and 8 year olds alone long enough to do anything. And dh wanted a clean house every day so I was always stressed and frustrated. I considered sending only the six year old to school but the others wanted to go too and I worried about him feeling like I treated him differently. Dh has told me since June I had to enroll the kids in school. I offeed to try an online charter school but he said no. I have run the gamut of emotions about it. I'd like to say this is temporary and I'll homeschool again, but I'd probably be kidding myself. I've struggled very deeply with personal loss (my mother in 2003, then brother and grandfather within months of each other last year) and health problems and depression, so I am sure some time to myself will help me. I know public school won't kill my kids and I can still teach them.

I haven't posted here in awhile but I read often and I used to post.

So for now, I say goodbye to being my children's only teacher. I say goodbye to homeschooling.

I have materials I need to go through and hopefully sell on vegsource.

Sorry that your leaving on such a sad note, I'm sure it all feels very disappointing. But God is good, He turns our sorrows into joy, He is our peace and His Word is a lamp to our feet, trust that He is there on your family's journey.

It looks like you are your husband are in conflict with your views on parenting. That makes it hard to accomplish anything. I hope things improve for you.

Crown, don't give up, it's not the end of the world! We sent Ds to a Christian school last year...(dh's idea!) Dh found out that I really wasn't "playing school" (dh's words for homeschooling Ds)..[sm=icon_smile_faint.gif] after all.
Think of sending the kids to school as a sabbatical for you![:D] What do you want to do for the next year? Don't sit home and mope around! (Keep in mind, that you will still be homeschooling after school because of ALL the homework!!!)

Find something that you would like to do or maybe find a part time job. Tell Dh that you are going to look for a job so he will have to help pay the day care for the 4 year old and ask him what household chores will he be willing to do since you will be working.

Thank you, those are great ideas. As I school shopped today I saw all the great materials I wanted to buy and felt melancholy. I know it doesn't have to be forever, but I don't know if my kids would ever want to go back to HSing.

Here's a bit of irony. In over five years of homeschoolig, I never spent as much as I have spent on "back to school" supplies and clothes. Even when I used the whole Lifepac curriculum, homeschooling was less expensive than public school. And I still have to send the money for the kindergartner's class logo shirt and scholastic fees, not to mention school food when they eat there. Next time someone says they can't afford to homeschool, ask them how much they think it costs.

I sent my kids to public school last year after 4 years of homeschooling. My youngest had never experienced public school and wanted to see how it was. It was an experience we will never forget. Neither one of the kids want to go back to public school and are looking forward to homeschooling again. I'm sure that fact that this was an experimental year and they knew that the possiblility that we COULD homeschool again persuaded the decision to homeschool again.
You will probably be surprised at how easily your kids will fit into school and will make friends. The teachers usually love homeschoolers because they know how to behave and actually enjoy learning.

Ds has mixed feelings about going to school this past year. He enjoyed being in a class with all boys. There were only 13 kids in the whole school and the only 2 girls that went were in the other classroom. He loved being in a couple of plays.
OTOH, he said that the teachers "dumbed down" the curriculum. He meant that if they were studying something interesting he just couldn't spend lots of time reasearching what they were doing. He also didn't like not being able to " go ahead" of the other kids when he got bored.
He wants to homeschool in September and try to do two years of high school this year.
He turned 15 in June. We didn't start homeschooling until he was close to 7. he figures if he can get 2 years done in one year that he can graduate a little bit before he turns 18.

Our Lord is gracious. Your children will be taught by the Lord anyway - that's what His word says. I am not saying we are to sit back and forget we have children. God is able to love them unconditionally, teach them, protect them, keep them. It doesn't matter where we live or what our circumstances are - He is able. I've been in several countries and in several difficult environments, yet, like David said in Psalm 37:25 "I was young and now I am old, yet I have NEVER seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread." Smile, and remember He loves them more than you can. Just think what a prayer warrior you will be for your children and those the Lord puts on your heart. Perhaps they will draw closer to Him and each other. As mothers, we all have a lot to accomplish in one day. It doesn't matter if we have one child or 17. Our circumstances are all different, but the Lord never changes, nor does His love for us. Remember also that the Lord has given us our husbands as a covering for us and our children. Trust God to work through your husbands decisions, even when they don't make sense. Isn't that how the Lord tends to work? Put your expectations on God. Expect God to work through your husband in all things. (Obviously if there is abuse, etc. seek shelter) That's not what I'm referring too. I think we can forget sometimes, and put our expectations on others, or ourselves and forget that they belong on the Lord. : )

The Lord chose to use me for 14 years caring for my brother with Aids. Through the Lord's grace I ministered to many,many dying men. The medical center he was cared for in was started by homosexual men and doctors, nurses, etc. My brother and several others are rejoicing with the Lord now. Praise God for His tender loving mercies are new everday! I cared for my grandmother as well who died shortly after my brother. My father died a couple of years later from lung cancer, and my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of years later. We've had suicide, murder, adultery, homosexuality, tragedies, long term illnesses etc. Our Lord has had a "colorful" lineage as well. In all of this His hand has been mighty and fruitful. I've been around the world, there are many different cultures out there much worse than ours. Some are much better than ours. However, ask God to give you an eternal perspective.

I am now home with two children who didn't witness most of these events. I have much to share - when they are older. Many beautiful testimonies from the Lord. I have been homeschooling for 8 years and see it as an oasis! We love it for now, however, I am always before our Lord for His direction. Because I have seen first hand, as many of you have, that He may choose to use us in a different way. Homeschooling is not for everyone. It is difficult and time consuming during difficult seasons and not so difficult seasons. To lead these precious children is difficult especially in this culture. We don't always understand everything - but He does. He is able, more than able to abundantly bless your family no matter where they learn. How wonderful for the children to come home to a tidy haven, with a well-rested-invested mommy who loves and adores them. Any educational institution will be difficult and will bring new challenges. He is faithful.

Here's a funny story for everyone: We personally know a man who is a Harvard "top of the class" graduate and has been unable to get a job for years. We also know a man who never graduated high school and "goofed - off" alot. He built a multi-million dollar international company that has been around for over 20 years. :) (don't you love those stories!)

Have a season of rest without guilt - especially the guilt others will try to inflict on you. Stay close to your Father and He'll give you piece as He leads you. You may even have to stay "quiet" for a while. God bless you as you continue to be faithful in following the leading of the Holy Spirit who teaches us all things. Psalm 37 is a beautiful piece to memorize, don't you think?

I am laughing because that is such a great object lesson. So many times there are dorky little "keys" such as that which will unlock a roomful of understanding.

I hope it goes well for you. I want to send my dd to a private school and go back to work full time. She at first wanted to but has now changed her mind. She is my only child left at home with her brother leaving for college soon.

My daughter decided last year that she was lonely and wanted to go to school to be with all the kids. She loved the kids but she was bored to death. My husband had wanted her to go to public school and always talked about how great his school years were. It took one week for him to tell her, "Maybe you do belong at that private school your mom wants to send you to." She was at the public school a total of two weeks and wanted to come home. The math teacher called her "stupid" in front of the class because she doesn't know how to do Chicago Math, she does division the old fashioned way. She could get the correct answer faster than they could but the teacher would ask to see her work and then make fun of her in front of the class. Many of the kids were little hoodlums. My husband couldn't believe what was going on in the schools. We live in supposedly one of the best school districts in the area. Hubbies eyes were opened to how good her homeschool education actually was. She is two to three years ahead of them in math, and five to six years ahead of them in the language arts. She took the a portion of the MEAP test and sailed through it. The teacher asked her if she wanted the advanced test or the regular test. She picked the harder test and talked about how easy it was(most of the kids took the easy test and struggled through it). Anyway, all of that to say, chin up!!! I'll be praying for you. This may be just what you need!!![8|]
