My husband is perfectly capable of fixing just about anything around the house. I appreciate that about him. However, he simply does not have the time. He has to put a lot of hours in for work right now.

Our hot water heater has not been working for about 3 weeks. It produces lukewarm water once in a while, but for the most part...only cold. The problem is a relatively minor repair. It's just a matter of getting the replacement part and installing. That's what he told me.

I am tired of waiting for him to do the repair. Would it be disrespectful of me to suggest that I just have my dad come over and help me fix it?

I don't know that it would be disrespetfull for you to ask, but if he refuses and you do it anyway, yes that might be percieved as disrespectful. Otherwise, I'm not a home repair do-it-yourselfer, for the most part any way, whilst I can and will do somethings, plumbing and I are enemies of the deepest sentiment, so if'n you was my wife, we'd call a professional!

It sounds to me like he likes cold showers and has forgotten about making the repair. Why don't you suggest going out for supper one night, that you'll do the driving, and while you're out, let's get that part for the water heater so the two of you could install that afterwards? Really put down your foot, that you really Enjoy a warm shower, that you neeeeeeed hot water for the washing machine. That you don't want to have to bathe over at mom & dad's to be comfortable.

If it's just the heating element, which sounds like it is, I see no problem or disrespect with having your Dad to the repair. If your husband is that busy, I'd think he'd appreciate a little help and a hot shower for once. It's a simple repair, but will require getting the make & model, then a trip to the parts house, and a trip back to do the repair. You are talking a minimum of 2 hours in my area, and I would have to charge you at least $180, if not $250, for sending one of my guys out.

Thanks for the advice guys. I really appreciate it. Actually, I found a temporary way to resolve the problem...sign praise songs in the shower! [sm=angel.gif] I swear the water was a little bit warmer this morning!

APZR - thanks for the "free estimate". Sounds like you're in the right business! [;)]

I was just wondering... do you two just pull up alongside the Wal-Mart building when you need water and then use some tools to attach on to their tap? If you are going to sing praises in the shower, then maybe you could hire someone to hold a hat out on the steps and take up a 'love offering'. Or are the days of RVin' it thankfully over? I just saw your note under your avatar there. [:D][:D]

Yeah...good ol' Wal-mart... No, we're not really at a Wal-mart, but we have seen plenty of them when traveling. And I like the idea of a love offering. Might get the kids involved in that one. [;)] We are presently in the rig, however, it's at a job site that DH is working at. So the water-heater in question is, in deed, the one in the RV. The only saving grace is that it's about 95 degrees out right now. Hot water is usually only an issue early in the morning or when I'm doing dishes.

APZR -> RE: Outsourcing home repairs (8/6/2008 11:55:14 AM)

Oh man... in that case, double the quote. RV parts are not cheap, and you usually have to be a contortionist to get to the mechanicals! [:D]

JJB1222 -> RE: Outsourcing home repairs (8/6/2008 1:30:37 PM)

DH did say the part is only about $25-30. It's some temperature pressure valve thing... Yeah, with RV's there's always more things that go wrong. [8|]
