ORIGINAL: WhiteRoseBlessings Kristin, I like to spoil people also, and I also like to extend hospitality as well. I think I may have mentioned earlier in the thread . . . I don't consider hospitality to be the same thing as the topic of this thread. To me, it's like comparing apples to oranges. Aww! Gotcha! I need to read the op better... I think I said it in a later post, in trying to clarify what I meant in the OP. This may come as a shock to some of y'all (gasp) but I can tend to over-explain things . . . and when I try to simplify, I under-explain.

ROFLOL Between the two of us, I'm sure we could fill many posts discussing brevity. I can be succinct when necessary . . . it's just rarely do I find it necessary.

ORIGINAL: WhiteRoseBlessings Interesting book, Kimberly. And you're right . . . sometimes a perfectionist deals with things by not doing anything. Kinda along the lines of, "If you can't do something right, don't do it at all." Which is me . . . and which is something that I've been overcoming for a couple decades now. (Hey . . . sometimes I take giant leaps in things; sometimes I take tee-niney little baby steps. heehee). Now this is something that I can relate to also.

Oh, I wasn't trying to direct y'all to clean your houses. I just thought the timing of that particular thread was funny in regards to our earlier conversation today.

ORIGINAL: CoeurdeLeon I could have written this! But, what I am on the road to realizing is that, while the 2 people who should have cherished me didn't, there are tons of people, and always have been, who think I'm semi-great. I'm convincing myself to listen to them and not to those lying tapes in my head recorded by people who shouldn't have been allowed in in the first place. The other thing is, I've been praying to see myself as Christ sees me. Or as God sees me through Christ. For a long time I had a warped view of God as someone who also demanded perfection from me. He happens to be the One who cherishes me more than all the others combined, so I want to listen to what He says about me. And I could have written this, especially the first part. Sometimes I do put more effort into cleaning when people are coming over, but most of the time I don't. For me it has to do with how my family behaved during my childhood. My grandfather was an elected official in our county so we were a political family. Everybody watched us and you never really knew if kind words were because of who you were or who your family was...strange way to live really. Because of that, I had to think of everything as WWCT? (what would the county think?). UGH! I hate to think what the kids of really famous people have to put up with. So, now I have a (usually) neat and clean house and don't put much extra into getting it ready for company. Having said that...lol! About a month ago our friend and thread host came to my house for the first time and my house was really messy. ACK! I'll admit I was a little embarrassed for about a day or two, but it was an unexpected visit and that's just how my house was looking at the time. She loves me anyway. Cool thread, SharMar!

Just read through this thread and want to put my own $.02 in. It really does go back to that "if anybody in the world thinks I'm less than perfect, then I must be the scum of the earth," thing, and that is certainly caused by childhood experiences. But I want to stress that my good, loving parents did not do that to me. They did not judge or shame me. The only thing they did was send me to public school, where I got shamed. It even changed my vocabulary, as I learned as a first grader that one of the unwritten rules was that no one is allowed to be different from other children in any way whatsoever. I always called my mother "Mama," as did all nine of my brothers and sisters. But when I went to school or watched TV, I discovered that no other child on the planet called their mothers Mama. I could not stop calling her that when I was talking to her. It was our family's loving name for her. But I could not allow anyone else to know that I did such a weird, strange, insane thing (so I thought), so I taught myself to call her "Mom," just like the rest of the world did, when I was talking about her to people outside the family. It became such an ingrained habit that, even when I grew up and my peers didn't punish me anymore for not being exactly like them,or more truthfully I didn't feel punished by them so much, and I learned (at around the age of 40) that people didn't really care about things like that, I still did it. She was Mama within the family and Mom without till the day she died. I'm not sure this story was what the OP had in mind. It's not about cleaning or leg shaving (though I relate to both those things). But it is about doing something different in front of other people because of what they think of me, or rather because of what I thought they thought of me.
