A few years ago during a holiday gathering, my aunt made a statement to the affect that her nieces and nephews were in a competition to get married. God shut my mouth so I did not tell her that I had better things to do with my time than worry that my cousins might get married first.

I think my aunts were competing to see whose daughter would be married first.

Is anyone in a competion to get married? Do you know anyone who is competing to get married? Does anyone else have relatives who compete by proxy?

I have never been involved in a competition like that. Some of my older cousins were though. The worst ones are twins one got engaged and set a wedding date, not to be one upped his brother got engaged within a couple weeks and set his wedding date before the brother who got engaged first.

Edited to make less confusing.

I was certainly never involved in a competition like that. If I would've been I sure would have lost! I'm the oldest unmarried cousin on both sides of the family. On my Dad's side I'm probably either looked at as strange or I'm felt sorry for! That would have used to bother me but now I kinda feel sorry for people who have such a narrow view of life!

Thankfully I have never felt that pressure in my family. They've always been very supportive of me in my desire to wait on God in this area of my life.

One of my grandmas did tell me just last week that I was stuck with her until I got married and had kids and then did remind me she was 75 and I might need to hurry it up a little. Of course she was just kidding.

Men have their competitions. I guess this is the female version? lol

Yes, it is rather silly. Not unless you are just joking around about it. But if you are serious isn't that kinda prideful?

The more I thought about my cousins the more I think it was their now wives who were competing as to who would get married first.

Well, you'll definitely beat me - because I truly don't know if I'm supposed to be married. It's not something I'm looking for - by any means - at all! IF it happens, great, but, I highly doubt it ever will for me. I think God has too many other plans for my life, and whoever I'd marry would have to be prepared to share me with many other things. Not sure there is a man out there who is willing to do that - especially at this point in my life.

I don't think so... and I don't think I ever will! It sounds scary... and yes, prideful.

I have a friend who's sister was like that. My friend got married so her sister got married(She knew the guy for a very short time) Turns out her husband was a member of a psuedo Christian cult. Divorce in record time.

She remarried again a few weeks later. This guy spent all his time at his mommies house. (Every meal!!). Divorce in a couple months.

So competition got her two straight divorces and tons of heartache.

Seems it would be better to wait for someone who is perfect for you.

A competition to see who gets married first?

I think it's things like this that the forums designers had in mind when creating this smiley:

And possibly this:

Agreed. The idea of a contest to see who gets married first is the worst idea in the history of bad ideas. Period.

I have said on these forums that the most miserable women I know are the ones who thought they could change their spouse. However, the other most miserable married women I know are the ones who rushed into marriage just to compete with a sister or friend or cousin. If you happen to get engaged the same time as a close family member or friend that's ok, but don't get married just because of trying to win a race. My older sister and my younger sister have both now married, but I don't consider myself losing a race, I consider myself wise to wait for the right person. They made good choices to, but again they married because they loved the guys, not to win any race.

I have one going on in jest with a friend, but I think she's going to beat me.

Which is fine because if she torments me into wearing a hideous bridesmaid dress I can pay her back tenfold.

Red vinyl anyone? *giggle*

Vinyl is for slackers. Go all out. Do Duct tape bridesmaid dresses!

After all duct tape is like the force. It has a dark side, it has a light side and it holds the universe together.

Why do you think I'm getting married just a week after Sharon? Kidding.

I used to think that because I am the eldest daughter, and because I thought it was expected of me that I would be married first. I have not a clue now what made me think that!!! And I think that's why I got married when I did...I was competing without realizing it. The marriage didn't last long (less than a year), and I can see my part in it now. Although it was not the only reason, and it certainly wasn't consciously thought of at the time, I think I got married to my ex because it was expected of me.

But since then, no, I am personally not competing, nor do I know of anyone who is. And I agree that it's just silly. There is far too much at stake in turning marriage into a competition. These women should stop seeking what they want for their daughters and let their daughters seek who the Lord wants for them, even if it means waiting a bit longer than expected. From personal experience, if you rush this or encourage anyone to rush the process, you are just heading yourself, or someone else (which may be worse), for big trouble.

I wouldn't want to get married without God's blessing. So, if He wants me to wait, I'll wait.
