Okay I warned Ty. No zero's or a haircut will be gotten. I printed out paper for him last night that he had written. I thought he said it was due today. I found it sitting on the end table this morning. If it was due today he's gotten a zero. AND I will be making an appointment for a haircut! Blessings, Garsy

After my kids being in a bad school last year. We moved to a different state and the school here is awesome the kids love it and can't wait to go to school every day. I am so happy that they are learning and enjoying learning they also don't allow the kids to pick on each other so lets hope that the rest of the year goes along the same lines.

I am still waiting for school to start. That is good because I am not looking forward to it. My exchange student is getting on a plane tomorrow and will be here Thursday. I don't know if he is nervous or excited about the possibility of being placed in a Christian home because he keeps asking me if I am a Christian, but he wants to know like everything about my faith, and that is definately not a conversation to be had over the e:mail with somebody who has a limited grasp of the English language. I so totally can't wait til he gets here.

I don't like BigBee's guidence counselor. That sounds awful. In a nutshell, my community group gives out $3000 in scholarships/awards each year. A few years ago, no one applied (well, very few and not certain people who would) - Turns out she only announced it once and if you wanted to apply you'd go to the office. So, if you missed that day... We decided to mail the form to the students, have the office collect them and add their transcripts. I called to get the addresses and she acted like it was a HUGE favor and inconvenience to get us the addresses and collect the forms. She was too busy to do it that day and who are we kidding, the secretary did it. Well, last year, BigBee asked for a study hall and she told him that 'we don't have study halls in SENIOR HIGH' and he utilizes his for group projects and to keep up with math. He needs it. Well, she put him in Geometry rather than Algerbra II. She told him it didn't matter. I talked to the teachers during IEP, she said it did matter, but did not get it changed, so I sent him in Monday to change it - they only do Juniors / Seniors on Monday. Fine, Tueday he goes in and she told him how it would be almost impossible to do what he wants unless he wants to take BOTH Alg II & Geo at the same time. Then she said she was joking. So, last night I had to tell my sensitive 14 yo who was determined to work both classes to prove something to this woman that it isn't a good idea when he is also doing spanish and has Scouts. And do it without him feeling like a failure. I hope she retired before DeeDee gets there.

I hope she does too. I don't like Linz's guidance counselor either. I just think she is rude and doesn't explain things well.

I can't figure out why they only announce things on the PA, and only do it for so many days. When I was in school, they sent out announcement sheets every day and it would have college fairs and meetings and scholarship deadlines and came in during second period. That teacher would read it too us (or at least the important stuff) at the end of class. It took a minute. Then, the English teacher would read it to us and THEN a teacher who had a pet cause would repeat it. So, it was nothing to hear 'who is applying for that community scholarship? Why not?" or "Who's going out for the play?" several times a day for several days. Now, if you are studying you may miss something important. And, with the internet - there is no excuse.

Our school does post the daily announcements on the website. I can even have them sent daily to my email.

I get to meet my exchange son's guidance counselor on Tuesday. I hope he is better than the principal. The principal acted like it was a huge inconvenience to have him. Then he complained about the company we went through because it wasn't AFS, and tried to make it so that the only exchange students they will take are AFS students. I don't even know if that is legal, but if I have to, I will find out. I got an e:mail from him today. He gets on a plane in about 8 hours so we should see him late tomorrow night unless flights are late or he misses a connection. The bedroom is mostly put together and we still have to go shopping for his birthday. I still don't know what to get him. So far he has a book for his birthday and a sweatshirt for a welcome gift. I need ideas!!!!!!!! I can't buy him anything big because he has to get it home, and I wouldn't even know what to get my son if it were him turning 17. They don't play with toys. They do play games, but I am not getting this one a game because then he would need a game system to play it on. I don't want to flood him with T-shirts. My mom already got him a t-shirt anyway. But I did order him a cake and we are having a birthday party for him. Anyway, I surprised my kids today with a trip to the water park. I have such a headache though. Too much sun. But they had fun. I had never been to this park before so it was interesting. I need to get motivated now and clean my house.

Working in the industry I do, I have very little time for school guidance counsellors. But, having seen how the system works in a school, I don't think they are given the tools to do a good job of it. There are known, functional assessments which can be done with a person which will help them to define the areas they will be good at in a work environment. Why don't govts spend money on those in schools and have the guidance counsellor there to walk the kids through the results, helping them to choose appropriate courses rather than just leave the kids hanging, not really knowing which direction to take except maybe they MIGHT like the subject? We use these all the time at work with school leavers who have given up on the system because it's become a holding pen for those who don't fit the norm, rather than a place where people's strengths are sought out and worked with. OK, RANT OVER! Kylie

I'll rant with you. The priorities seem to be... Pass PSSA tests Graduate Prepare for a job Prepare for a career As long as the test scores are good and no one drops out, we have money coming in from the state.

I am just glad that my only issues with school adminsitrators were the principal at the highschool not wanting to accept my exchange student. And now I don't even have to worry about that because he just doesn't like the company we are using and keeping kids out because of the company they come through I think would be discrimination. One day, he will get what he deserves. Speaking of which, on the way to the waterpark, this car was going like 80 and cut me off. Then a couple of miles up the road, while he was still going like 80, the sherriff was clocking and got him. At first I thought it was me because I was going about 10 over, but then I moved over and he went past and the next thing I saw was the guy that cut me off got pulled over. My kids were cheering. That is the second time in my life that happened to me. Many times you say "where is a cop when you need one?" and twice, I got to actually witness the person who was driving like a dork get pulled over and I got to drive by and smile and wave.

That is gratifying. I was thinking that when I started reading your story...I never see that guy get what he deserves - or what he should get before he slams into somebody! Really gripes me because that's what caused the accident that killed my mom - guy clipped her and ran her into someone else and never stopped.

I'm sorry too, CSL, about how you lost your mom. Thanks for the update about Donna, Julia! I haven't been around too much today. E's algebra text came today. Yesterday she stayed after school to copy problems, so I think she kept up okay. Garsy, did your hubby get his book in time? Tracy, waiting for an update on your student.... Hi Fawihtt, I'm glad your kids are in a better school. Dee

Hi everyone, Sorry to be MIA. Our computer died and then I started doing 8 hour shifts at my internship site 3 days a week, kids back in school, then got sick, DH just went back Monday....arg! too much chaos. Hopefully now that things are settled we can have some normalcy. As far as school, DH has started his (hopefully) last semester. His schedule is all over the place. I am finished and will be starting to job hunt after the holiday. Jessica has started 8th grade, she is back in the choir but we are battling a bit over the homework. She has to develop some discipline or she is going to be in trouble this year. The twins are doing well with the new teacher. I was concerned because they don't do well with transition. It's due to their disability so I didn't know how well they would do, but end of the second week and they are doing great. So if you think of us pray for all the chaos and details to be worked out. My love to you all, Kim Q

We're struggling to get into a groove here too. I was concerned because dd had a math quiz and I didn't realize it until like two days later. They're mostly reviewing so I wasn't concerned about this quiz as much as that I was missing a communications link or that the teacher might not communicate home what to study for these things. I hear stories about the upper grades at the school about teachers not communicating anything home, just expecting the kids to be responsible for it - that's so not going to fly with dd!! But I asked the teacher and, apparently, what I thought was just a homework paper on Tuesday was the review sheet. It's just figuring out a new system and a new routine, I guess. But it's been a crazy couple of weeks too. This week we had "parent meetings" Tuesday with the teachers and all K-2nd grade parents. Tonight was 4th-8th. Of course, being 2nd and 4th this year, I had to go both nights. But I also organized New Family Receptions at the same time as these staggered parent meetings - both nights so I'm just wiped out. I guess I can't be too surprised at something falling through the cracks on Tuesday - I rushed dd through her homework so bad! I hope she did OK on that quiz. I've got to plan a meeting for all the room moms and class volunteers on the 11th - after that things slow down!! We should be able to settle in then. Everyone I talk to, though, just seems to be dragging. I don't know if pollen is high or something is going around. I know it's always an adjustment but it seems a lot rougher all around this year for some reason. Maybe it's just me.
