Hello everyone I just moved into a new place and we have a lot of plants all around the outside of the house. We also have a lot of spiders. I read somewhere that it is good to have spiders because they help with the garden. Which is great because its not my garden but is there any ideas on how to keep the spider level down in my house?

You can make sure that all of your windows are properly cauleked and that your screens are in good shape. No holes in them. Vacum all of your corners and basement because they like to lay their egg sacks in dark places. The egg sacks look like little white cottonballs and they can hold up to 70 babies in them. Make sure that you use a shop vac or something like that so you can empty the canister outside right away so they don't hatch in the vacum cleaner though. Basically just make sure that they don't have places to get in and get rid of any webs and sacks that you have in your house. That is pretty much the main way bug services get rid of them. Their sprays are more to keep them away. AND I have been told by one (I can't remember which company) there is nothing you can do to kill the baby spiders in the sack so getting rid of them is pretty much the only way to prevent them from hatching in your home.

You can buy sticky traps online. Put them around where little kids or pets can't easily get to them. Behind the headboard is a great place. It traps the bugs and they can't get loose. No poison... just goo. Knock down any webs in or around the house, too. Turning off any outside lights at night will keep spiders from building webs to capture moths, etc.

My philosophy on spiders is if they stay outside and leave me alone, I'll leave them alone. One year I had a big black spider with yellow markings that built a web in one of my iris beds. We coexisted peacefully, and I hoped that it caught lots of flies and mosquitoes and other bugs, but if it had ever ventured inside the house, it would've died a swift and violent death. The sticky traps mentioned earlier work well, and they are nontoxic. They can be rather unattractive if you lay them out flat and several bugs get stuck on them, but most of them have an option where you can fold up the sides so the sticky buggy part isn't visible.

I have had this same problem. I almost stepped on a huge black spider while getting into my tub. I drowned him. I have had several spiders in my tub over the past few weeks and thought the good Lord was going to take me 'Home' when I discovered a black widow on my toilet. And Yes my bathroom is a disaster. They are in the bedroom too... such audacity. I considered torching the place. I live in heavily-wooded state, so I suppose this is normal. Im moving out of this state next month.

Thank you so much! I have to say though if I had the money I would have an exterminator come in and wouldnt be asking people online. The using my foot idea was great! lol Ive done that but it seems like their family members always show up for revenge. Like someone else had posted Ive seen them in the bathroom and in some rooms around the house. I do always get rid of webs. There never seem to be any in the house. The owner of the house has lots of plants outside though and they seem to really like the plants outside. Matter of fact I dont really have a problem with the ones outside. Its the ones that want to share the bed with me or take a shower with me that I dont like. I mean maybe things could be different if they helped pay the bills or something...[8D]

I have a few ideas that may help you out. Bulbs of garlic peeled and placed on each side of the doors and windows. Non toxic to children and pets, if they get curious it won't take long before they spit it out..lol. Cayenne pepper sprinkled along the edges of your windows, doors and walls. There is something about the heat from it, and the powder itself that they don't like. Will also help with other critters too.
