A few months ago I purchased "The Power of a Praying Wife" and "The Power of a Praying Woman" by Stormie Martian. My mother suggested them since the "other" marriage books weren't really working for us. These books are awesome. and I now see God answering my prayers from them. They have led me to look at things different and are teaching me the way to pray for certain areas in my marriage and life.

The 5 Love Languages is good. For wives I highly recommend The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands. These are only two and I am sure you will get a whole list from others. Marriage books should come with a warning label though that reading them will not make your spouse follow the advice given. You should only read an advice book for what YOU can get out of it. Your spouse may or may not choose to read it or follow it no matter how much you love it. If that is going to frustrate you or if you are inclined to hold that against your sweetie then you are better off not reading marriage books at all. In that case these books can do more harm than good.

It depends on what area of marriage you need work on.

"Love and Respect" by Eggerichs
"His Needs, Her Needs" by Harley
"Five Love Languages" by Chapman
"The Gift of Sex" by the Penners

"Marriage" by Rabbi Pliskin (orthodox Jewish perspective)

Ditto to many of the suggestions above, I now want to read "Love and Respect" - it's the third time I've heard of it this week!

I would add:
"Marriage on the Rock" by Jimmy and Karen Evans - for husbands and wives

"Your Husband, Your Friend" by Bob Barnes - for wives, really had an impact on me as a brand new Christian after being married less than a year

Blessings!

Thank you for the requests so far! I'm not actually married, right now. I just want advice for the future!

"For Better or Best" by Gary Smalley has helped me tremendously...and I'm not even married!!

The book is to women who want to make a God-inspired change in their marriage. It's all based on scripture (instead of the author's own opinion), and I believe many of the techniques, so to speak, can be used in all relationships, not just marriage. Also, it really talks about the differences between men and women, which I have found really helpful. It helps you understand that when your man does such-and-such that hurts your feelings, he's really not doing it purposefully, or even knowingly. He's just reacting on his nature.

And this book is written assuming that the husband has little or no interest in improving the marriage. It gives advice about how to improve how you treat him, talk to him, etc., which will more than likely inspire him to improve, as well.

Although I'm not married, I am in a somewhat difficult romantic relationship with a man. God led me to this book, and it has completely changed the fabric of our relationship!

all of the books mentioned are good ones.
Another one that is good for any kind of relationship is "Boundaries" By Dr. Cloud.

Yes. But, it's not a book on marriage. It's a book on learning to think as Christ wants you to think. If you look behind most of the threads in this section where marriages are in trouble it's plain that there are two reasonably nice people that simply let the past control their present. They have not let their minds be truly renewed by Christ.

If you truly would like to start with one book that will make all the others make more sense, then I suggest "Who Switched Off My Brain" by Dr. Caroline Leaf.

Virtually all people enter marriage with baggage from their birth families. Some bring troubled childhoods and others bring equally difficult memories of rejection, etc. These memories form the strongholds from which we evaluate and interpret every new experience. Learning how to take these thoughts captive so that they do not poison your relationships is the best foundation that I know for building a strong, loving marriage.

Book of Romance by Tommy Nelson - explains love and marriage based on the Bible and Song of Solomon. Very good book.
