Very few. LOL. My dad had to learn how to sew buttons in the army though.
Anyway I don't know how to sew so I have to buy some grocery bags. However they have some nice ones at Target and Macys that are actually fashionable to carry around.

Discipline is one thing. Shopping style another. I am monthly shopper.

The great thing about a paper sack is that blood circulation is not interrupted to the fingertips when carrying it, like one of those urban tumbleweed plastic bags. Now, some cloth shopping bags that same size could be interesting. There'd be a wood platform bottom to them to help them stand upright? Plus, you'd get to tell the cashier to fill the bag, and fill it properly- some cashiers put one or two items in a bag and then its on to another one.
Have there been more forest fires since paper bags went out of style? Kraft brown paper is strong stuff, and doesn't have to require the most choice woods? If someone would say save the trees, use these paper sacks made from bramble and mess that help spread forest fires so easily, that wouldn't be such a bad thing.
Styrofoam has been talked about least. Bicycle helmets are made of styrofoam, but no one is going to glue together their own helmet. I see it used mostly with carry-out boxes at restaurants. Has anyone read if it's been studied in using as an insulator in an attic? Recycled paper is popular for this. No one would want food-caked trashy styrofoam in their attic, but if it was shredded up and washed?
Just take your old sleeping bag in to the grocery and ask them to fill it up, except for your eggs. That would give the man a new accessory- the man egg purse! Also there'd be the man bread clutch (in team colors with logos).

I don't like brown paper bags because when I put anything more than 1 2-liter bottle in them and try to carry them they rip. I don't want to use my whole arm (or both) to carry a bag. Even the ones withi handles seem to rip.
I do have some green bags but sometimes I don't have enough.

I had bees in my bedroom chimney a few years back. I had honey dripping down it until the landlords got rid of them for me.

If a store in our area started doing this, all it would do is cause us to find a store that did not charge for their plastic bags (if there was one hopefully).

The twenty cent charge is on plastic and paper so no options. It is government imposed for ALL grocery store facilities in Seattle.... I am sure it will the 'burbs by next year and the whole state the next.
There is no opt out other than bring your own bag. Admittedly they are convenient but what if you buy more groceries than you have bags.... buy another or pay .20 for nothing (although they work well when cleaning the litter box)
The styrofoam issue is ALL... take home boxes for leftovers or take out meals. Meat trays in the grocery stores.
Also plastic forks and stuff at take out will be outta here.
Not to mention the Mayor now declaring "car free" days in certain areas of the city.
I think Seattle has caught what California has had for years....

When I spent time in Germany (Meckenheim), most stores did not supply plastic bags - you bring your own reusable bags or crates.

Sam's Club doesn't supply bags. The have old boxes at the front of the store in which to put your stuff/

The grocery stores we use around here all charge 5 cents per bag ... or you can bring your own (or use the boxes by the checkout). These stores also carry products at a lower price than the bigger name stores (ie. Food Basics vs. A&P) The other option offered by the stores is to bu one of their large plastic boxes (similar to a laundry basket) ... they are super durable and hold a LOT of groceries!

But there's nothing to stop you taking bags that you've already used back with you when you go shopping is there ~ a point that was also raised in the OP.
I do have mixed feelings about people being charged for cheap carriers, but then I have a problem with people getting new carrier bags every time they go into a store and then using them for rubbish or to pick up dog muck. I don't see why I should pay higher food prices to save them money in this way. I have less of a problem with people being charged for carriers that are stronger and can/shoud be reused many times.
There are few people who are unable to take their own bags to the store when they go shopping.

Hey! Thank you! I like the bottle-pockets idea. I plan on making some more bags, and that will help me.
Often, of Fridays, I go to a deli to buy some of our Friday night Sabbath meal, and I really like my insulated grocery bags. Great for keeping the good hot until I get home, but I have two, in case I buy my husband ice cream.

Then what do you suggest I pick up my dog's messes with? Either way some sort of plastic is going to end up in the garbage can. Now if the dog would keep her messes to my yard it wouldn't be so bad, but there are times when we are out walking OR to dog gets over to the neighbor's yard and well makes a mess. And if you think about it - the mark up on products pays for the grocer to buy the plastic and paper bags, so in a round about way I AM paying for them. It may help a bit to reduce the plastic problem IF the people bagging groceries would learn how to bag groceries.
And to the styrofoam issue. Yes there should be more efficient means of packaging that would still keep the meat wrapped safely and keep the juices from leaking all over my other groceries or my reusable bags.
I also go shopping as few times a month as possible - considering the nearest grocery store is 11 miles away, and the nearest WalMart- 20 miles or so. So when we go shopping we make as many stops as possible and often end up with 20 to 30 bags in back of the van from various shops and stores. And what if I end up being short a few bags when we hit the grocery store as our final stop?
Oh another great use for those plastic bags - Barf bags for a child that suffers from car sickness and we all know that sometimes you simply can't pull over fast enough. Having a couple plastic Walmart bags stashed in the cubby holes of the van have saved us a number of times!!
I do have a few reusable bags that we do use, but I think those of us that have the biggest beef with it are those of us that do large shopping trips just a couple times a month - Even at $1 a bag - for folks like me with large families and always lots of groceries, and strict budgets - $20 or $30 is a big chunk of our grocery budgets. And then there's the storage of those bags and the guessing of how many I would need to bring in the store with without having to run back out to the car.
