A gunman opened fire on gay 'church' Today in 'rare' human show of support for 'lucifer's kingdom', for it is written Love your enemies as self; therefore will he get the life eternal penalty, also? Must we love him to death like he loved others unto death?

Have all the facts come in yet? This episode might have happened because the guy was targeting a gay church, but that isn't necessarily the case. It could be a random shooting.

Knowing the Unitarians, I would be surprised if they supported the DP on this one.

I hope the families involved are OK.

Stephanos -> RE: Unitarian Church in TN Assaulted by Gunman; 1 dead, 8 injured (7/28/2008 1:07:44 AM)

No one, even Unitarians, even homosexual supporting ones, NO ONE, deserves this happening.

Unfortunately I would not be surprised if the nuts from Westboro start coming out and praising the nut who shot this gathering up.

FurGodWurLivin -> RE: Unitarian Church in TN Assaulted by Gunman; 1 dead, 8 injured (7/28/2008 5:54:20 AM)

Here's hoping that doesn't happen.

I, however, wouldn't be surprised if on the other side of the curtain we find out that God allowed this happen because that specific church has placed a seal of approval on the homosexual lifestyle. I wouldn't hold my breath, but it wouldn't tremendously surprise me either.

God allows all sorts of random acts of violence to happen. Eventually, we're bound to have a random act of violence occur at a liberal church as well.

The fact is that in the world we live in, bad things happen to good people all the time.

This is local news, here[&o]

Apparently there was nothing "random" about this. He had planned this for a while, and did it while the children were doing a play which had brought in a large number of people from outside the church. He did not plan to leave the church alive.

I do not agree with the Unitarians, but no one deserves to have their children attacked by some frustrated congenital loser who doesn't have the guts to kill himself but somehow *does* have the guts to shoot up a roomful of strangers[:@]

Further details on motive

"The shotgun-wielding suspect in Sunday’s mass shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church was motivated by a hatred of “the liberal movement,” and he planned to shoot until police shot him, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling P. Owen IV said this morning."

Yes he was very disturbed, no they didn't deserve it. When fundamentalist Christians are victims of crime do they deserve it as "God's judgement"?

Sad indeed.

Thou Shalt Not Kill.

bluestone -> RE: Unitarian Church in TN Assaulted by Gunman; 1 dead, 8 injured (7/28/2008 3:22:20 PM)

According to this article the man had a problem not only with liberals, but with Christians.

drussell52 -> RE: Unitarian Church in TN Assaulted by Gunman; 1 dead, 8 injured (7/28/2008 4:27:34 PM)

Hi. I posted elsewhere in this forum, temporal security? asking, should houses of worship start thinking of installing cameras or other cdevices to create some semblance of safety for those who attend? My question was prompted by the reporter's remarks on the NBC nightly news, July 27, who in essence said this is one place one would not anticipate such behavior occurring, i.e. a shoot-up. Yes it's sad, and fully agree no one should kill his or her neighbor. I guess where do we as professing believers go from here? Maybe "inclusion" has its price to pay also.

colliefan -> RE: Unitarian Church in TN Assaulted by Gunman; 1 dead, 8 injured (7/28/2008 7:49:52 PM)

With the current situations of churches being "shot-up" and robbed of offerings, the only solution is to have armed guards (or parishoners with weapon permits)

Very true. [&o][:(]

Of course.... there are some uncouth folks blogging and joking about him taking advantage of his "Liberals Hunting License".

I surely cannot be the only one that has seen the window stickers on trucks.
[:'(]

Folks really, really need to tone down the rhetoric when it comes down to violence against those that are liberal.

We don't have to agree with them. But that doesn't mean the solution is to kill them.

....and before folks say: "C'mon... it's a joke"

Thinking it in one's heart... and all that.

Jes' sayin'.

One bright shining note: The Espiscopal church in town has been ministering to the congregation.

Praying... Lord, please have mercy.

Somehow, I strongly doubt that Jesus would approve of His believers carrying weapons in His Father's house.

The bible supports self-defense and the defense of those who can't defend themselves and I don’t believe there is a clause that says it cannot take place where people gather to worship. His Father's house was the Temple...

Need I remind people that Jesus stopped Peter from killing the Roman centaurion? Didn't He teach to turn the other cheek? If someone takes your cloak give them your coat as well?

Of course that's just dirty liberal thinking I guess.

Peter took issue with Jesus giving Himself over to those who desired to kill Him... Why Jesus took issue with Peter's action is key... Nothing there supports your view...

What does one's cheek and cloak have to do with defending one's life?

Obviously, people don't listen to the Bible anymore - or understand it's teachings.

Americans believe in Hollywood. So, in the words of the fictitious John Connor, "You can't just go around killing people".

Fundamentalist Christians are as dangerous as Fundamentalist Muslims. Be it Pat Robertson, Eric Rudolph, Osama Bin Laden, or this guy from Knoxville. I can agree w/ tenets from all these men, but killing and destruction is not the answer. It's sad, it's really sad.

Christians need to start focusing on Jesus and the Truth. They need to let go of their hatred of the poor, weak, sick, misguided and those in need. They need to stop hoarding. They need to let go of their jealousy, and selfishness. The things which drive them to kill, starve and hate - all these things in the name of GOD. They need to look away from their political God (man, Satan), and start focusing on the real God. I'm sure this killer thinks he is a good Christian, but he has missed the boat. He has probably even convinced himself that it was God's calling. Most evil things are done in the name of God - Satan is a clever fella.

Rememer Thou shalt not kill? I seem to recall that factoring into God's top ten list. I don't recall that ever being recinded or God saying Thou shalt not kill, unless.... of course since this isn't the great Christian Republican Party stance it'll be ignored, or ridiculed by people who don't actually think for themselves. How's that Republican brand kool-aid by the way?

I remember David KILLING Goliath and not being said to have murdered him, yet later when he sent Uriah to the front lines in order that he be killed he was said to have murdered him... David killed Goliath, and murdred Uriah... So you're wrong...

Who teaches that all killing is murder? The bible doesn't, because if it were so Joshua and Moses would be mass murderers. ..

I would have no idea since I haven't voted for a Republican since 1984...

Kerrlaw -> RE: Unitarian Church in TN Assaulted by Gunman; 1 dead, 8 injured (7/29/2008 8:47:40 AM)

Just a note that the gunman was not a "Christian Fundamentalist."

Today's newspaper (this is local news for me, too) includes an interview with a person who considered the gunman a friend. She says that he had told her that the Bible was full of contradictions, that he resented that his parents had made him go to church, and was enraged when she told him about her daughter graduating from Bible College.

He appears to be a mentally unstable person who was looking for someone to blame his troubles on.

bluestone -> RE: Unitarian Church in TN Assaulted by Gunman; 1 dead, 8 injured (7/29/2008 9:07:27 AM)

thanks for that post, Kerrlaw1.

Bringing guns into a house of worship is a bad idea. How long before someone blows his top during a called church meeting? Pastoral review? church softball game?

There is nothin' like jumping to conclusions before facts are disclosed!

And what in the world are you talking about here??? PAT ROBERTSON and Eric Rudolph and Osama Bin Laden. YEAH GOOD CALL THERE? /sarc.

Just doing a quick google search for Pat Robertson and nut job mass murderer and I can't find any stories matching that! Care to explain? You may disagree with the guys politics and his stand with the conservative party! But to link him to Osama Bin Laden and Eric Rudolph is disgusting and outright deceitful. You need to get a grip and youshould be ashamed of yourself. Then to go on and say:

quote:

They need to let go of their hatred of the poor, weak, sick, misguided and those in need.

I'm sure in your diluted mentality of what Christianity is you may consider yourself to be the perfect Christian, and we should all follow your path to righteousness? WHO do you know that hates the poor, weak, sick and misguided????? WHAT!!!! Give me a break.

WHAT? Where is the outrage of this shooter shooting up a congregation full of believers. jkdjr25, who are you pointing to here????
