dozermom67 -> No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/22/2008 6:38:53 PM)

I am on a strict no-sugar, no-starch 'diet' for the next few months to get rid of yeast overgrowth in my body. [&:] (yeast feeds off of sugars and starches) Basically, I can't have anything with sugar, corn, peas, potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, etc. I need ideas and recipes, please. (prayers would be great as well!)

Miss Giggles -> RE: No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/22/2008 6:40:11 PM)

Did you get tested for diabetes? multiple yeast infections can mean high blood sugar levels and can be some women's only symptom.

Did you try diflucan from your doctor?

That is an extremely restrictive diet (the candida diet) and I have heard that it doesn't always work. Because yeast overgrowth means something in your immune system is not working, so when you reintroduce the foods back into your diet you'll get it again.

The only thing I can think of is vegan. That's no grains, and no dairy, but no meat either.

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/22/2008 6:59:15 PM)

Can you have agave?

In case you don't know what it is, it can be purchased at health food stores and grocery stores with a health food sections. It is made from the same cactus that tequila is made from. It is sweeter (in my opinion) than honey, and it does not have that fake taste that artificial sweeteners have -- probably because it is real. Agave nectar is a natural sweetener with the lowest glycemic index (glycemic index of only 27 - 31; 90-percent fructose sugars and 10-percent glucose sugars respectively).

There are usually two kinds sold: a light-colored agave and a dark agave. Re the light agave, it tastes like sugar; the dark has a lite flavor. I use the lite only occasionally, because I like the dark for most things. I use it mainly for tea, homemade root beer," and making ice cream, sorbet, and sherbet.

Is this 'diet' something that your doctor has told you to follow?

If so, you need to go back and find get a diet plan of foods you can eat, not just the foods you can't eat. I agree that it sound incredibly restrictive and while you may treat the yeast overgrowth, you're going to be setting yourself up for other health problems.

It can be very difficult to think of ideas when people list only the foods they can't eat. You may want to list foods that you can eat too.

For instance, can you eat any fruit?

Roberta_ -> RE: No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/23/2008 4:50:44 PM)

Wow, that is a lot of restrictions on your diet. I do agree that it would be much better if your doctor would tell you what you can eat instead. I did notice that you can still eat meats and most fresh fruits and veggies.

monamie -> RE: No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/23/2008 10:01:23 PM)

Once you find your way around, it's not that difficult to do. Tonight I had a lasagne made with strips of zucchini instead of pasta, and homemade sauce (to avoid the high fructose corn syrup). You can also use long strips of zucchini or eggplant instead of crust to make pizza. Just brush it with garlic infused olive oil and broil it until almost crispy, turn and broil the other side, then top and heat until the cheese is hot and melted.

Tomorrow for lunch I'm taking chicken salad with lettuce leaves for a roll-up and some carrots and cucumbers as a side dish.

Just be creative with foods that are already your favorites. You can pm or e-mail me and I can help you modify recipes if you want.

Also taking a good garlic supplement and an oil of oregano supplement will help speed the long tedious process. Our office also carries a produce called "Candaclear" that you may google and find a source. Your local health food stores will probably have several choices of products to help kill candida overgrowth (which is waaaaaaaay more extensive than I would have imagined!!!). Oh, and kefir is great too.

Harvie -> RE: No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/24/2008 12:56:48 AM)

You can make all sorts of great meat dishes, of course.

And all sorts of great egg dishes ... with cheese and veggies.

And some fabulous stir fry dishes with fresh veggies.

And some awesome salads.

And you can have pork rinds instead of chips or popcorn.

And some great veggie soups and stews. And pot roast in the crock pot.

Can you have sprouted grain breads? (No yeast?) Can you have whole grains?

EEEEeeeeeeewwww, Harvie! Seriously? Isn't there something else?

monamie -> RE: No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/24/2008 6:26:37 AM)

Nope, no grains of any kind--sprouted, whole or otherwise (at least not at this point). Maybe in the future. And pork rinds are acceptable on Atkins but I wouldn't recommend them. They still have an acidifying effect on the body, which creates a hospitable environment for candida (and viruses and bacteria and.......).

Do you check your pH, dozermom? Keeping at 7.25 to 7.5 would help tremendously.

There's a recipe at the bottom of THIS page that's REALLY good!!! Since it's a chicken dish, I also added a little sage. I change the recipes periodically and sometimes they contain raw honey, which you might need to avoid for now until you really get a handle on the overgrowth.

You're doing a good thing. It will revolutionize your health. A systemic overgrowth affects SO MANY areas of your health---even causing depression, etc.

monamie -> RE: No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/24/2008 6:37:35 AM)

Okay, just two more things then I really have to log off and be at the office at 6.

Take a high quality pro-biotic. That will replenish the good organisms in your gut.

And you do know you may experience some "die-off" side effects as you kill the yucky stuff, right? It may be unpleasant but not for long, then you'll begin to enjoy the benefits of true health!! The major part of your immune system is in your gut and when you get this under control you'll be sick a lot less often.

his_chosen -> RE: No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/24/2008 9:49:34 AM)

Check your library for "food allergy" cookbooks. It's amazing what's out there! One of my kids was allergic to milk, soy, eggs, and nuts. Even without all those foods, we were able to eat quite well. I know there were recipes for all sorts of restrictions.

Auben -> RE: No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/24/2008 10:34:17 AM)

Just no starch, right? Not no or low carbohydrate?

My son is on the Ketogenic diet. Basically a high fat, very very low carbohydrate/protein diet.

You can have pesto.
You can have something called Miracle Noodles (look it up), so you can have spaghetti, mac n cheese, etc. Or you can make noodles from squash (zucchini or winter).
You can bake with almond or another nut meal to make crusts, cookies, muffins.
You can have yogurt (Dannon Light&Fit Carb and Sugar control). You can make a granola out of nuts and seeds to go in it. It can be very similar to cereal.
You can have cheesecake. [;)]
You can have bacon, eggs, and sausage.

If you're only no-starch there are a ton of things you can eat. Get a GI chart and see what fruits and veggies work for you.

There's also a book called Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet by Raman Prasad. It's a diet for GI suffers and a host of other problems. I found the recipes to be very easy to adapt (they do use honey and limit dairy a bit) and better still many of them are things people would like to eat. Some Indian food as well.

Good luck.

Auben -> RE: No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/24/2008 10:37:37 AM)

Oh, I'm not sure whether agave will work for you, but sucrolose (ie Splenda) is okay on our diet (not the one mixed with sugar...you have to watch the label carefully). The saccarine sweetener Sweet 10 is as well.

Stevia is a toss up. Because it's a 'supplement' they do use carb rich fillers sometimes without mentioning it on the label.

dozermom67 -> RE: No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/25/2008 7:53:27 PM)

Sorry I'm just getting back here...it's been a busy week! I will try to get to your questions, and let me say a big "thank you" for your help!

I did have my blood sugar checked and it was fine.

I have been on diflucan, and although it helped temporarily, the yeast grew back.

I am taking an enzyme that helps break up the yeast (called "Yeast Away"), taking garlic and other naturally anti-fungal suppliments, drinking lots of water and cutting out the foods I mentioned. I can have unlimited veggies, some fruits (not a lot yet as they have natural sugars), and meats. Basically, I'm "starving" the yeast as well as killing it off.

Basically, I need to reduce as much as possible processed sugar, yeast, dairy, wheat, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol, as they are the main culprits because they help candida yeast to grow.

Thank you for your great suggestions! I am taking a garlic suppliment. I am also taking "Yeast Away," an enzyme that breaks up the yeast itself. And, yes, it is SO expensive! I love Kefir and have been getting that when I can, but again, it's so expensive! Plus, my hubby loves it and 'hogs it.' LOL.

If I hadn't read about the "die-off" before I started this I would've thought I was doing something wrong - - I felt like I was DYING the other night! I felt bloaty and just downright miserable from all of the "toxins" being released in my body from the dying yeast. It gets a bit more bearable each day. I'm drinking plenty of water to flush the toxins.

I definitely feel I'm on the right track. Amazing how that, after going to doctor after doctor after doctor (and spending money we didn't have!), I am figuring this out "on my own." I prayed and prayed for healing (not knowing exactly what I was dealing with at the time), and instead the Lord led me to the knowledge I needed to be healed. I SO look forward to feeling "human" again!

Thanks so much! Since writing this thread initially, I have spoken to a friend who's sons are on the SCD diet that you mentioned. She has given me a few tips and recipes. One problem I'm having is it's SO EXPENSIVE to eat healthy food!!! Especially now that food prices keep going up and up!

My friend gave me a yummy 'banana pancakes' recipe that is flourless. I've had them for two mornings in a row.

Once you have this cleared up, you might try agave. It seriously leaves Stevia in the dust with regard to taste. It is great for diabetics who need their sweets.

agapetos -> RE: No Starch, No Sugar, Need Recipes & Ideas (7/25/2008 8:33:50 PM)

If I remember rightly, stevia is banned here. I do use agave though and love it. You can make a great chocolate sauce by mixing agave syrup with cocoa (unsweetened) powder.[;)]

Wow! I hadn't thought of that yet! Great idea! That will be nice for my homemade soy-milk-ice-cream. Thank you!!
