I KNEW I had a mommy intuition on this...they cut Isaac's feedings back a little bit (to 28ml from 30ml) I was telling everyone yesterday that the last couple of days he hasnt seemed as content and happy during his feeds. Like SOMETHING was bothering him, and he spit up on me once, and was fussy during the last couple of minutes. He is still tolerating his feeds they just decided that they had given him a little too much. Which would make sense, we are uncomfy if we eat too much, and the poor little guy didnt have any control over how much he was getting.

Erin - Yay for poop!!!

Do you guys do all natural foods and not canned? Meaning - did you do the pureeing yourself?

Here's Jadon's latest video in the bumbo. Let me know if you can't view it through myspace:

Nope! I have made some of my own food, put it in the freezer for times that I ran out of the jars. But *I* found it to be a lot of work, a big mess, and time consuming.
I bought the jarred food, still do. (I know I am in the minority though.) I have a hard enough time keeping up with dishes, laundry etc. I had to put something aside in order to be able to have more family time.

Jae, I've made my own before, but some things don't come out a good consistency. Peas, carrots, yams all come out really good with a food processor. But, I had a hard time with fruits and meat, so I bought jarred food for that. If you do buy baby food, just make sure that the only ingredients are fruit or veggies and water. There shouldn't be anything else in there. Beachnut sometimes puts "other" stuff in their baby food, but Gerber doesn't usually except with the meals and desserts.

Jae, I bought a little canned (when it was cheap).

But mostly I just smashed up a little of whatever we were eating and fed it to them in small bites.

I'm lazy.

I feed jarred, since he pretty much won't eat anything I make. Plus like Yolanda said it's a pain and a big mess.

Since we're talking about feeding, I'll share something funny about Levi. He has consistently refused to eat little bites of green beans, peas, and other vegetables. (he'll eat some of them pureed) But, if we give him bites of whatever meat we're having, his eyes light up and he'll eat as much as we give him. lol--he takes after his daddy! And of course daddy is proud, he says "He's going to be a 'meat and potatoes' man like his daddy!" lol

I didn't! I just took some of what I was cooking anyway for ourselves, if it was suitable, and took out some of whatever would mash down well and froze it in an icecube tray. That way, I only had to pop one ice cubes worth out and defrost it, then warm it, for a meal the next day or whenever. I never once used a food processor/blender (I didn't even own one!)

As I said, the only jars I bought were pure apple puree.

Amber, that's cute about Levi.

My boy loves his veggies. Give him a whole corn on the cob and he goes to town; put a bowl of broccolli in front of him and he goes right at it.

But fruit? That's a mixed bag. He likes Clementine oranges, sometimes grapes and oddly enough ... pomegranates (that's weird, but he saw me eating them so he was going to eat them too). But blueberries, bananas, all that other stuff kids are supposed to go crazy for? Nope, not him. He did eat them a lot when he was eating pureed baby food.

Jacob just started solids recently.

Question for those that pretty much start with Cheerios - don't they choke? We tried giving Jacob Cheerios after he'd been on cereal for about 3 or 4 days (at over 6 months old) and he choked and puked it up. He even choked on Rice Krispies.

So, he's been getting pureed stuff.

I made peas (one bag dried split peas simmered with 8 cups water for couple hours along with a few carrots for better flavour), sweet potatoes, carrots & squash (cut in half, baked, then scooped out and pureed). I put all the pureed stuff in ice cube trays, freeze them and transfer to large ziplock bags marked with what's in them (all those orange ones look the same otherwise!). It's perfect, then I can just take one or 2 out and mike them quickly when he's ready to eat. So far he eats everything perfectly well. Not a huge fan of the peas, but I wouldn't be either - yuck!

He hasn't started fruit yet, I'll start him on mashed bananas soon probably.

with the first we used lots of canned baby food (nearly all)....second we used about half canned and half made by me. By the third and beyond it is easier to just make it myself because we already kept that stuff around for the older kids. So with them it was only canned baby food when it was most convenient (like traveling, or an extra thrown in the diaper bag for emergencies)

Was he picking them up himself or being fed them?

I haven't made my own stuff ever. Only tin things my kids ate though were the fruits and the custards. I dont like the tin meats, vegies and pasta things, I just cut mine up (or mashed) that I had cooked for my dinner and gave it to them.

Timmy choked on anything like that until he was 13 months old. He got pureed and slightly lumpy food until then. He could pick them up himself, and he had some teeth, but still choked. They are supposed to be ready when they can pick up the cheerio with their thumb and index finger, but they aren't always ready when they can do that.

Stick with purees for now, and then try every few weeks with a cheerio or Gerber puffy treat or the like. If he chokes again, wait another few weeks.

He was not picking them up himself.

But he is now and we tried again, and he didn't choke. So there ya go.

Nicole - praying for you and your sweet darlings.

Thanks for the prayers, his temp went down over night so YAY for that. Grace still seems a little sick, and I have a headache, but atleast nathy is handling it a bit better.

That's pretty much what we did for 98% of feedings. Gabby wasn't overly fond of jarred foods though, but who would be? Those things are pretty bland.

Tammy, Gabby is a "choky" baby and it has only now started to taper off. Before that she would sometimes gag and choke on stuff that she had even taken bites of, including soft things like banana.

Chase is a gaggy baby too. He even gags on cereal sometimes. Just seems like when it hits the wrong spot on his tongue or something.

I have C-level CPR (basic CPR, two-rescuer CPR, and infant CPR) and basic first aid.
I have that through the fire department, we have to keep it all current (CPR once a year and basic first aid every three years)
I'm going to be taking First Responders this spring I think. That goes into more emergency stuff (including childbirth! )
