ORIGINAL: Flintejae Well, he doesn't seem content with my milk - like he wants more. He has gone to feedings every 2 hours vs 4. He's wobbly when he sits up, but is getting stronger by the day. He loves to chomp on things (which is also due to teething), etc. I am okay if it's too early - I'm just trying to figure out the timing vs. information I've been reading. Janine, all those things you mention there could just be down to teething. If you remain convinced about trying solids, I'd personally suggest tiny tastes of pureed apple or pear instead of rice. Rice is bland and yukky and nothing like real food. And it can upset their stomachs (it did not agree with my ds's constitution at all). When you and Jason eat, does Jadon make any gestures of trying to grab your food?

ORIGINAL: Royal.Fortress He could also be feeding more frequently due to a growth spurt or teething, too! I have no advice to give, although we're planning to do baby-led solids. (not my original article, but you need to sign in to get to my preferred article - this one has the same basic info) Excellent article! I always use the Wiki on BLS, but I think I might add that one to my repertoire Janine, we are the same as Sarah on solids. We let Gabby do the leading, she never had cereal but did have smooshed avocados or bananas. While she showed some of "signs" of being ready, she didn't really start eating until 8-9 months, and then we just gave her whatever we were eating(minus the salt, which I don't worry about now). We also did Cheerios and Saltine crackers. Part of the theory behind BLS is that a baby won't (typically) need more then they are capable of eating on their own. Gabby didn't need solids nutritionally at 6 months(98% of babies don't) and she wasn't capable of eating that much on her own. But now, at 12 months, she can feed herself an entire meal which is right on target for when her nutrition source will switch from formula/breastmilk to solids.

ORIGINAL: Flintejae Jadon will be six months in two weeks. Well, it certainly sounds like he could be ready. I'd echo the suggestions to try oatmeal or simple fruits and veggies at 6 months. I got the same pressure to continue exclusive nursing "because he was just trying to increase my supply" even though it steadily got worse and worse over the course of more then 3 weeks. I'd finally had it, and I don't regret offering Nathan a small amount of solids. But a very small amount of very liquidy solids (lots of breastmilk to very little oatmeal/cereal), was all I started with. If you feel comfortable, then just move slowly. If he doesn't respond well, then back off and think about trying again in a month. If he responds well, then you have your answer. But I do most certainly understand where you are coming from in this.

Something that i discovered when researching allergies and gluten in particular ( I think ryanne mentioned it before too) is that they reccomend that gluten/wheat be introduced as late as possible, which is why they suggest Rice cereal as it is low on the allergy chart compared to wheat, oats etc.

Jae, I started Chase on solids at 4 months... He was so ready. He was nursing all.the.time. and he just was very interested in what we were eating, he would watch the fork go from the plate to our mouths and just look and look. He had great head control by then too. Could you try putting Jadon in the Bumbo on a chair by the table while you guys are eating? (even before Chase started solids, we would put him in his bouncy seat next to us at the table because we wanted to start the habit of eating together at the table...a little early maybe, but that was one thing that was important to us) Have you talked to your doctor at all? Our doctor told us we were ok to start at 4 months. To answer your question, we started with rice cereal mixed with breastmilk. I mixed it with formula a couple of times, he wouldn't eat it. I waited four or five days and then started sweet potatoes or squash. Then waited another few days or so and started carrots or green beans or whatever. You can get two different kinds of cereal, add milk(bm/formula) or the just add water type which has formula type ingredients in it. Do you have a pump? You could pump like once a week and that would be enough to mix your cereal for a week or so. One thing they did tell us at the hospital class on starting solids was that at 6 months they start needing more iron, so they "need" either iron-fortified cereal, or meat. (so they were even recommending that meats be first foods, ahead of veggies or fruit ) Anyhow, that's not exactly my stance on the whole thing, but thought I would share in case anyone was interested.

ORIGINAL: BlessedMamaofmany I personally think cereal is dumb. I just do. Hey, I have no reasoning behind it, other than *I* wouldn't want to eat something slimy that tastes like cardboard...LOL (no offense intended other Mama's. It's all good K?) I started Zay-Zay on mashed naners. Or mashed carrots with nothing on them. (just fished out a couple before seasoning them) Sandy I started my ds on rice, but it bunged him up and gave him gut rot. So I gave that idea up and fed the rice to the chickens! Pureed apple was great for him, and I then used that to introduce other new tastes, by first mixing the new thing with a little pureed apple as I knew he'd take that. I mixed apple with a little carrot, apple with a little potato, apple with a little fish, apple with a little chicken even, but only introducing one new thing at a time, and trying it for 3-4 days before assuming it was ok. Once he'd taken those and was ok, I started introducing the new things on their own. Funnily enough, my ds couldn't do banana. Or broccoli. Both gave him wind so I gave those up for a while. But he loved cod and he loved sardines! (still loves fish now as a 19yo!)

Okay, I am truely a mama, I am so excited about poop. We were gone from seeing Isaac ONE DAY....just one....and in that time frame he used up all his clothes. I took about 5 outfits and thought that was plenty since they dont just change them for fun, but my boy (I'm so proud) had a blow out on each and everyone!!! The problem is he "fills up" preemie size diapers but the newborn ones bow his legs out too much that its not great for his development. But I am quiet proud of his poop since we had to do baby laxatives every other day at the beginning. Oh and when we change his diaper, he only pees on the nurses, never ever has he peed on mama and daddy. Such a good little boy. Sad note...we overheard a convo on another baby in the unit....the mom hasnt even called and checked on him in over a week. It just broke my heart. Here I feel bad if I miss one day, and on those days I call about 4 times, sometimes more.

That is heartbreaking, Erin. I chose to think those moms are just too overwhelmed to deal with the stress. Isn't it wonderful we have the Lord in our lives to carry these burdens for us? It's still hard, but we have the peace of knowing there is someone far greater than us that has everything under control. Yeah, Isaac and pooping! It is definitely a mommy thing to be so excited over stinky diapers! --Kat

I bought Heinz Chocolate Pudding too, but that was for me, not them (it was nice with ice cream and cold custard!) I used to buy the banana puree and warm it up for myself...tasted like banana bread fresh out of the oven!

My ped was surprised I hadn't started him on meat by 6 months, because by that time he was trying plenty of fruits and veggies. She never pushed solids, but once I decided to start, she was all for the meat. We gave Gabby ground chicken pretty early, and I even tried it jarred to help her sleep through the night. Didn't do a lick of good for that one, and that stuff is gross. We did feed her a small amount of jarred food, it was much easier in the airport or when we were out on long day trips but she wasn't really especially fond of them. Yay for poop, Erin! Sarah, I don't have a study it was just a guestimation.
