humbleinspirit -> Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/19/2008 6:40:03 AM)

I know that in the past that I have met one or two women who felt that way, but other women just see it as a general term towards women in general. How do you feel about these everyday terms?

rgod -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/19/2008 9:35:25 AM)

Chick doesn't bother me. I refer to myself as chick sometimes. I guess because it is used in other ways (i.e. chick flick, chick lit [books geared towards women], and the like). I've never been referred to as "babe" (at least not within earshot) although I'll get "baby" a lot. (Either baby or ma'am :) I personally don't like someone calling me baby unless it is someone who is very close to me, because I consider it to be intimate. I guess babe would be ok although I've never really thought to apply that term to myself.

I-Luv-My-Flowers -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/19/2008 10:11:46 AM)

I hate them both. I hate pet names from guys in general. Guys that have felt comfortable calling me "sweetie" or "girl" have also been comfortable telling me what they thought of the way I dressed, my hair, and even asked personal questions about my lack of a steady boyfriend.
One of them even told my mother that I had to "have something on the side" that I wasn't telling her about because of something I was doing with my hair.

The only exception that didn't bother me was one of my college teachers, who called all of his female students Pumpkin. Getting a pet name from a cocky-old-guy-thats-been-happily-married-since-before-you-were-born is different than getting one from other guys who are trying to push your buttons.

I know that a lot of men don't mean anything by it but I've only had bad experiences with pet names. [&:]

I don't care if guys call me babe. A few of my guy friends call me that.
But that bothers me, because I would only a boyfriend to call me that...no one else.
Or husband. Whichever.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan when guys call me "baby".
My last boyfriend called me "boo".
I'm like, "WHAT?!" hahaha.
& I absolutely hated it and I told him that, but he didn't respect me so he kept calling me that.

Prairiehiker -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/19/2008 12:27:40 PM)

I posted this same topic in the male forum. Yeah, it bothers me when a man calls me sweetie or baby. Unless I'm dating him, I don't want to be referred as those because it feels somewhat condescending. I guess I get this thing a lot because I have a few male friends that i hang out with and most of them test the waters.

GTMA Prairie! Honestly I had been thinking about this topic just this past week then I saw your thread as well.

ebony101 -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/19/2008 1:13:56 PM)

I'm listening to my Jon Secada CD as I write this so I hope I express myself well.

Firstly, I don't like the word "chick" at all. Ugh! (shiver) Don't want to be called that at all.

On the other hand "babe" is tolerable, but as usual it depends on the circumstances. If I'm walking down the road and guys in a "respectful" way refer to me as "babe" I'll tolerate it. After all they don't know my name and they want to make a positive (not crude) comment. In these circumstances I prefer "babe" to "it".

I don't really like to be called "babe" by guys who are my friends. If I'm called "babe" in that situation, I will think that they're trying to change the relationship from friendship to something more. If that's not their intention then they will just confuse me.

Being called "babe" by someone who I'm in a relationship with - is not tolerable at all. I think that they could put a little more effort into coming up with an endearment. I prefer some other less common name with more meaning attached to it e.g. sweetheart, my love or those cute french terms (blush, blush) [8|].

Having said all that what I really like is when I'm called by my name, I think that's really powerful. Whenever I want to get my guy's attention I call him by his name, then tone of voice, intonation, mood etc. play a really important part. I used to date a guy who would always call me by my last name prefaced by Ms. - that is not acceptable at all - not good at all. After a while I began to wonder if he knew my first name at all [:o].

That's my input humbleinspirit - so it's back to Jon Secada for me [;)][sm=dance.gif]

Thank you everyone for your input so far!

betterisoneday -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/19/2008 9:41:26 PM)

I dislike both those terms. We raised chickens when I was young and to me "chick" is a little, yellow fuzzball. It will not elicit a positive response from me.
"Babe" no, just no.
Though for some reason I've never minded being called "girl", which seems (to me) to be just as ...inconsiderate (not quite the right word, but close) as chick or babe.

saraimay75 -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/20/2008 1:09:27 AM)

Don't care for either. But there are worse names that I could be called.

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/20/2008 1:32:33 AM)

At my age, I think I would fall on the floor, laughing! But don't call me sister (I'm not your sister!), don't call me lady (that's a dog), don't call me Mrs. (my husband's name) (I have a personal identity), and if you like me at all, don't call me ma'am, I don't care how old either of us are. Don't tell your babies they must call me ma'am either. I go by my first name with everyone.

Oh, yeah, and I am not a "girl" or a "gal."

stellaluna -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/20/2008 10:21:34 AM)

Chick doesn't bother me in the least. I use that word a dozen times a day.

Babe is for your significant other.

The rest fall into some gray area in the middle. I have some very close guy friends that I've known for years and years and years. I've been known to address them as "Sweets" or "Honey" or whatever and likewise.

sudden -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/20/2008 1:26:56 PM)

Not at all, just as long as a guy doesn't mind me calling him "doll-face". [:)] (which I do in my mind but not out-loud unless I know them).

PrincessButtercup -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/20/2008 4:51:31 PM)

I agree with Stellaluna.

Chick doesn't really bother me, because I use that term myself. But Babe and other such sweetsy names are used by my guy only.

slushie -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/21/2008 4:51:18 PM)

I don't like to hear it... it's too boyfriend/husbandish. That's just my opinion. Yeah, they're sweetsy.

I've never had anyone call me either, though.

BugLady -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/21/2008 8:05:13 PM)

I don't care to be called either. Especially chick for some reason, even though I am a good egg. [:)]

LaVidaBonita -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/22/2008 12:06:34 AM)

I don't like chick at all. It just sounds disrespectful to me.
The only person that I want calling me babe/baby is my husband.

ChiefWannahakaloogie -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/22/2008 12:30:58 AM)

i dont care about either [8D]

BugLady -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/22/2008 12:37:00 AM)

Good gravy! Chief, your screenname is hysterical.... in a disgusting sort of way.

ChiefWannahakaloogie -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/22/2008 2:02:43 AM)

thanks [:D]

car2ner -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/22/2008 7:34:11 AM)

It is kinda funny that we are commenting on Babe and Chick considering what some of us call ourselves online...[:D]

BTW, if you ain't m'love, you best not be calling me chick or babe. There is another thread about being called, "the wife" and usually I get only "wife". But he means it affectionately.

I don't care about chick. I call girls that myself. [:)]

Babe, I think is weird. Unless coming from another gal or my dad. [8D]

People have nicknames based off of my first name and I like those the best and those are what is most commonly used by my friends and family.

Focusing -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/22/2008 10:52:56 PM)

Depends if they are friends, and how close of a friend. For a man that I don't really know, I do not appreciate it. I prefer to be called Babe only by my BF though. [:D]

Funny story: I used to work with a woman who every time a man called her "dear" she would call him "buck" in return. [sm=Llol.gif][sm=Llol.gif][sm=Llol.gif]

BugLady -> RE: Does It Bother You When Men Refer To You As Either Chick Or Babe? (7/22/2008 10:54:18 PM)

Buck. Beautiful. [:D]
