Would you go to the service or the viewing?
I had to go to one of those a few weeks ago. I hated it! Poppa wouldn't go, he said he wanted to remember her the last time he talked to her. I wasn't as close so I felt ok that way, I just detest going because I am not the comforting time.
I joke
And that isn't what most people need from an aquaintance. A friend yes, but an around town person - not so much.
I went to a funeral home once and there stood S&E in line in front of me. E gave me a big hug and reminded me how special I was and asked after the kids. S was talking to the widow. The widow told her daughter that S played piano (yep, played my wedding, mom to young man talking to strange woman if you read my story) and S invited the widow to come to church to hear her play. Now, S's church changes every time there is an argument. They spilt in two, one closes after a year, and then they all get back together until the next argument. The widow graciously declines. S pushed. The widow pointed out that they went to to the Meth church in town and S said "they allow you to go to church someplace else, don't they?"
Now, I have known her for 18 years - she was digging for people on her side of something, I doubt she knows she does it though. 
If she had said that she was working on a special piece, come and hear it on this date, it would have been 'ok' in my book, but a PUSHY general invite - not so much.

It must be a family thing because my grandparents read the obituaries, my mother does, and now so do I (well I skim them).
A long long time ago in my mother's small town, they would post the obituaries on a noticeboard on a pole on the main street. My mom says that every day around noon my grandmother would get up and say "well, I'm going to see who is dead on the pole today" and then go downtown and read the obituaries.

The last funeral was for our school's cafeteria manager and the mother of youngest son's soccer coach. She was a wonderful woman that meant a lot to my kids. She wasn't a member of the church down the street but her son and his family attended there and my kids knew their children through youth group activities. We've known Mrs. F since my eldest was a third grader and he starts 9th tomorrow, so for 6 years.
I likely would have taken my children that wanted to go to the viewing then allowed them to go home, then I may have stayed for the funeral depending upon if any of my kids wanted to stay for the funeral.

One of the more bizarre deaths I read about today was former British heavyweight boxing champion James Oyebola who was shot in the neck in a nightclub after asking a group of men to stop smoking. (The shooting occurred in west London in July 2007 and the trial of the accused is now in progress.)
...Witnesses said Oyebola had been "pleasant, calm (and) happy" before the shooting. He had been asking people to stop smoking in the courtyard.

I saw today that Neal Hefti, a Big Band trumpeter, arranger and composer of themes for the movie "The Odd Couple" and the "Batman" television series, has died on 10/11/08. He was 85.
His son said the "Batman" theme was Neal Hefti's most difficult piece, taking him at least one month to compose the driving bass and explosive trumpet bursts.
"He threw away more music paper on this thing than any other song," Paul Hefti told The Associated Press. "It got down to the blues with a funny guitar hook, the lowest common denominator and a fun groove."

I've asked my family not to have any obituaries written about me. I'd hate to read that I was dead. The shock would probably kill me.

HA-I figure I'm checking every day to make sure I really HAVE to get dressed and go into work.
I recently had to tell Poppa about a loss of one of his school friends. I used to buddy with his mom, because I volunteered where she worked and we have a great rapport but only met this man once. PBee, however, will tell you the story about being in elem and this young man carrying him to the office because PBee had fallen and had the wind knocked out of him.
Turns out the fellow died in his sleep but the manner of death looked suspicious until they did an autopsy. Just unusual natural causes. But to stand there, and hear his mother tell us the story and say 'but they brought him back to us' while rubbing his arm about broke my heart.
Told her I'd kick butt and take names if need be...
And, I found this reading the obits. No calls, and it wasn't even listed in the newspaper that PBee checks every morning. I caught it that night in my favorite paper and all I could say was "oh honey, I'm so sorry" and he came over to see what was wrong.
