Oh and even though today wasnt our day to go down, I'm going anyway (with the moms) just so we can nurse again. The little stinker will REFUSE a (bottle) nipple but goes right for the breast. He wants the real deal! I am taking my boppy down today so it might help me hold him a little, he's so little its hard to get a good hold. And while nursing he had no heart rate drops or anything, his heart rate calmed down to a good level, and his respiration evened out. I'm pretty excited!

anyone have to start the bait and switch in a 2+ month old??

still having to do it atleast twice a day. not fun. any ideas? anyone?

Manda/Sarah -- I only took her to get Jeremy today and yesterday, no other trips. She was great yesterday until we were almost back home. I'm pretty sure she was just hungry. Today she didn't make it quite as far but was much more tolerable than the previous days.

I think mainly the previous days she was just so worn out and tired of the in/out's of the car for errands.

I pumped the other morning for the first time in weeks. She slept 7 hrs and I was hurting big time. Pumped an ounce off the side she didn't eat off of and was able to go back to sleep.

And I'm super not happy but my period has come back. bleh.

That could explain being really emotionally raw the last few days. ugh. I did not miss it and actually thought about getting pregnant again just to make it go away.

I had so hoped nursing would keep it away longer.

owell. I'm not having a great few days.

That could explain some of Isabel's odd nursing behavior too. I've heard that the taste of the milk can be affected when your ovulating. I know mine always acted a little displeased with nursing around that time.

Nursing is like the coolest thing ever. I really enjoy it. And I LOVE the way he looks at me when he nurses. I just wish I could do it all the time!!

They let us try two nursings a day, giving him a "break" from nursing for two feeds (given through the tube) but he just couldnt do it. He WANTED to but everytime he'd latch on his heart rate would drop. I'm telling ya, watching you baby go limp and blue is the scariest thing ever. But knowing you have to keep your cool and "wake him up" is also hard. your natural instinct is to panic, especially when his alarms are sounding and red lights are flashing. When we tried for nursing number 2 yesterday he did that 3 times. So we decided it was too much and we just cuddled while he got fed through his feeding tube. Poor baby just still doesnt have the strength yet.

I am so glad that our hospital is so pro breastfeeding. He will have to be able to take a bottle before he goes home, but they will work on that when we arent there. Since we want to breastfeed they will let me do that when I am there, and they will give him a bottle when I am not. I appreciate the fact that they are letting us do this. They have a great lactation team that comes by when I am nursing to see how everything is going and to make sure I know to call them if I am having any trouble.

Yesterday he nursed (the time he was able to do it) for about 40 minutes. The last 10 or so he just wanted to suck for fun. But then he'd get choked, heartrate would drop, etc. When he does nurse they dont even supplement with the tube feeding, they feel he is getting plenty.

That's great you like nursing so much. Some folks really don't like the sensation. I like it too though, kinda feels like relief. That's so scary about his heartrate when he nurses though. Does that just have to do with him being early and he'll grow out of that? That's nice about the hospital being so helpful with nursing. Everything sounds like it going really well.

think of the positives...at least you know when you are ovulating!!

Erin......it is soooo great to hear you talk about nursing Isaac!!!!!!!

I know what you mean about the sensation you get when they go limp and stop breathing.....Emma and Jackson would do that for the first few months of their lives...and it is very very scary!!!!

Yes, his heartrate drops are just due to prematurity. He's not quite strong enough to do everything at once.

Well he will HAVE to take a bottle before he can come home. And once again he flat out refused it from the nurse today. He's a booby baby 100%. I'm proud but I really wish he wasnt so stubborn!

I'm heading out to see Isaac and to NURSE!! I get excited just thinking about it. I LOVE nursing my baby!! I cant wait to get my boy home so I can do it more than once a day!! But hopefully we can start doing it more soon. His blood count was very low (growing faster than his body can keep up) so they are treating him for that and hopefully that will make his turn around.

Okay this is really weird for me, but it seems the engorgement phase is already gone. I am usually painfully engorged...rock hard, lumpy breasts...for at least a week after my milk comes in. I usually soak through bath towels at night and have trouble sleeping because they are so full. They are full, but not painfully. Esther is definitely swallowing lots. This just isn't normal for me. Okay still?

let's see...is she peeing? Pooping? eating?

yes it is okay. Every nursing experience is as different as the babies that are doing the nursing.....

I never got engorged with my first baby....but I did with my second. I never got engorged with my third baby (but I did get mastitis when she was 3 months old!)...I got slightly engorged with 4th kid, and not at all with 5th.

As long as she is passing the pee/poop test...then it is fine.

AND she HATES her car seat, she screams when you start to put her in it, BLOODY MURDER. I hope it wears off when she 'resets' from so much car trips.

How about using the car seat at home, for her to sit in for a few minutes every day? Might help.

I have found that that often makes it worse! Has the car seat hatred been SINCE the trips or did it happen before?

If it is from the car trips...their little brains KNOW that that seat is conected to the disruption of their little life.....so I would avoid using it outside of the care....if it existed before the trips..then the using it for talk time would be helpful.

Erin,

Has your hubby been able to hold the baby yet? The reason I ask is this: They have found a correlation between babies that are full term and their body temp dropping and being held by daddy....being held by their father HELPS trigger the body thermometer to function. They have also found that it helps premature babies, but at a slower rate. My sil's little girl had the same problem (she was very early, not as early as your little man), but once my bil held her....they stabilized a lot (took a while for them to be great though).

I am so proud of you for your endurance and your strength. You are wonderful mommy..and he is a blessed son to have you for his mother.
