Hey Feesha! Can you just nurse him a couple times a day at the same time everyday, and do the rest formula. Good to know about the organic formula being sweeter.

When I started weaning at 7.5 months, I started by doing formula in the day time, and nursing just in the night (bedtime, wake-up and anytime in between)
Then, it was just bedtime and middle of the night, then just bedtime, and then just bottles.

It is amazing how fast your body can adjust...I had no troubles cutting out the daytime feeds and still having lots of milk at night.

with our fourth he had to stop nursing because he got sick (couldn't breathe to nurse), so I still held him like I did when nursing, but I started off with giving him a cup instead. At first he just held the cup....then he would switch off and on from nursing to using the cup. Eventually he was using just the cup and still on my lap. Then he gradually started sitting beside me with his cup, then in the floor with it, etc...and worked himself away gradually like that.

I went from nursing my son 4 times a day to 1 or 2 times a day and giving formula instead. I'm surprised that I'm not engorged from dropping feedings..! I still want to nurse him but he's not interested and I don't think he's getting much milk. I guess I just dried up or my body just can't do it anymore?

DS is adjusting very well, aside from a little stomach discomfort, and is such a sweetie. He likes me to cradle him and he'll suck his finger or hold his blankie. Hopefully we'll have that breastfeeding bond for a while.

Since starting formula he is refusing solids. All he wants to do is drink formula now. Tomorrow I'm going to pay attention to how many ounces of formula he's getting a day and give a cup instead of a bottle. I'm also going to try to give it as a drink with his meal. I wish I had a pamphlet on weaning!

Thanks for the advice. I'm sad that my baby is growing so fast

We did non-nutritive today! He didnt know what to do with the breast but he had an idea and we let him "play." We can do it every day now.

feesha....if you want to continue then there are ways to boost your supply, but the biggest killer of supply is baby being given something else. So if you want to continue that's the first thing I would suggest doing....go back to exclusively bfing.

YAY Erin...thats AWESOME!!!

Okay ladies, I need some help! I have a baby who keeps going 6+ hours during the day without eating - yesterday was 11:00 - 5:30, today is 1:30 - its now 6:30 and she just screamed when I tried to feed her =( I don't know what to do! I'm engorged, plus I'm fighting mastitis in my right breast - and I'm not able to keep it drained!! I'm afraid my supply is going to tank since she's not eatiing ... and when she does, they're not *good* feeds ... arg. Suggestions?

Forgive me, but how old is she now? Does she have a hard time latching on because you are engorged? Has your cycle started back yet (I ask because it can change the flavor of your milk...and some babies are sensitive to that)?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The milk man has arrived. LOL Ouch. I was pleasantly full before I laid down for a nap, but when I woke up...um...yeah...trying to decide which third world country I should feed this time. She's been getting quite a bit already, as I've heard quite a bit of swallowing. She's an interesting nursling too so far (aren't they all?). She doesn't nurse too often...seems to be about every 4 hours in the day and 3 in the night. Pretty quick nurser once she gets going too, which is good, as I don't have hours on end to sit on my rump right now. But how she starts out nursing is hysterical! She licks the nipple repeatedly, and I have to express quite a bit before she'll latch on good. She's got to make sure it tastes good first or something...my little gourmet!
She'll be 12 weeks on Thursday. I'm not so engorged that she can't latch, so I don't think that's it (she never had a hard time latching even when I was super engorged when my milk first came in). My cycle hasn't started back up yet.
That's cute about the licking - Gwen does that sometimes too!!
Kim - is she happy during this time of not eating? Like, she doesn't seem hungry at all?
If I were you I'd probably start pumping at her missed feedings and store it in the hopes that she will swing back to eating and then you hopefully won't have problems with needing to bring it back up.
Donna - Isabel does that at the end of some feeds, esp at night when she eats like a piggy. She gets done and just lays there for a minute and licks. I find it kind of weird but Jeremy thinks it's funny.
I was going to suggest that too, if you are able to pump at all (I'm usually not by 12 weeks). That way, it takes care of your engorgement and you can build up a small supply of breastmilk for later on. Probably she's just in between growth spurts though...doesn't sound abnormal to me. Babies have really hungry days and not so hungry days just like older kids and adults.
I'm really surprised at how sad I am about not nursing Isaiah any more. Really. He's the first one of my kids that has really enjoyed nursing and that *I've* really enjoyed nursing. Part of me wanted to keep going for another 6 months...part of me is glad....part of me (I bet you can guess which ) is aching...
You were right Jennifer. Very very bittersweet
Brandy - sometimes happy for the most part - yesterday yes. Today she was fine from 1:30 - 4:30, but fussed/cried/screamed until 9:30. She finally ate at 8:30 when I got in the bath with her - and then pooped twice. Then she was happy smiling and okay for about 15 minutes and then with the screaming again. I got her settled in the 'colic hold' and then nursed her to sleep at about 9:30.
She had a couple of WEIRD poops on Friday - after not pooping for almost 24 hours (very, very abnormal for her - you can usually set a clock by her morning poop, and she normally goes at least 4 times a day). They were dark dark dark yellowy/green and mucousy/tarry. They kinda reminded me of meconium ... she had another one of those tonight, too. I just want a normal day with my baby
Donna - glad to hear it dosen't sound abnormal. I was thinking that if this was at night, it'd be completely normal/fine ... it's just that it's during the day ... she's also been having napping problems...
ETA: When this started, I was feeling horrible (mastitis) and then we were away for the weekend, so maybe it's stress/routine disruption related?
Do you have a forceful let-down? And a lot of foremilk? I did with Nadia and she couldn't handle it. She also had the green, almost grass like poops. I had to literally stand in front of a sink and start my letdown into the sink till it slowed somewhat so she could eat. After that we didn't have a problem. But I went through that stage too, where she didn't want to eat, but was hungry. Or didn't want to nurse, I should say. Just give it time, she'll come around, although it's frustrating till she does!!
Man oh man!!! Nath is really hurting me when he feeds last few days. He has 6 teeth now and they are just grating everytime he goes on. I have to take him off sometimes. He has been feeding ALOT last few days coz he has been sick. (and no, I am not pregnant). I have never fed a baby this old, so is that kind of normal for it to hurt when they have so many teeth or when they are sucking more than normal?
Isaac and I did "non nutritive" for the third day in a row today. He's getting more into it. Though once we get everything "set" and in the right place, he starts sucking a little (not really latched on and sucking, that will come later), but when he gets a few drops of milk, he will grin real big...which in turn makes everything move and we have to start all over again. But it is super cute. They may start "nippling" (feeding orally-be it bottle or breast) next week. Then lactation will come by and help us learn to nurse.
Yeah, your nips will get used to it. Maybe try to use some lanolin. Which teeth does he have, 4 on the bottom, and two on the top? That second set on the bottom is a killer, I remember that!
Yay Erin! Exciting!!
Well, I don't know what it was, but Gwen's pretty well back to normal now. On Sunday night we had a bath together and then co-slept all night skin-to-skin, and did some more of the same yesterday morning. She nursed every 1.5 - 2.5 hours yesterday and has been nursing well today - THANK GOODNESS. I'm really not feeling very full, though - but I know that doesn't really mean anything! She had 8 - 9 wet diapers yesterday and 4 - 5 poops, so I know she's getting enough. If she was going 2 - 3 hours between feeds, I'd probably feel more full. Around 3 months is a normal time for your supply to drop a bit though, right?
It can be Kim.
Glad things are back to normal!! Can you think of anything you ate preceding the change? That's all I can come up with. I do know though that you milk can change flavor if you have mastitis. One mom said it seemed almost sour and her son refused that side until it was cleared up.
Really, eh? I didn't eat anything different, and I didn't notice a different smell or anything. She refused BOTH sides, too, so it wasn't just the affected side. Oh well - I'm glad that ordeal is over with, anyways!
