I think she's still pumping the same amount, just getting less. As Ryanne said, I think it's common with exclusive pumping.

I increased the formula because my supply went down, not the other way around. I am pumping more often now and getting less milk. I have to feed him. If I am only making 20 oz a day and he needs 36 ounces a day I have to give him something. I'm not going to let him go hungry so I am giving him formula.

I have recently had to do the same thing Emily. My little sweetpea has recently developed a pretty serious appetite, and while I'm not exclusively pumping, there are times when I just can't nurse her (especially right now as we're 1 week away from our big move to Chicago and extremely busy). Unfortunately I can't seem to pump much at all these days. I started taking Fenugreek 2 days ago but haven't seen a great deal of improvement yet.
So for now I'm taking what I can pump and adding a little formula. She's doing pretty well with that.
I do have one major victory to celebrate though. . .she is finally able to nurse without the nipple shield!!! That alone has made my life so much easier. Although now I'm having to deal with sore nipples for the first time. LOL

I'm getting bummed about breastfeeding (I use that term loosely since he's not even getting milk, yet). I can see why women dont like pumping and would rather nurse...its such a chore. And I try to get up at night and it just doesnt happen all the time, I know it would be different getting up to feed a baby, and I guess I should look at it that way, but its hard too, the whole "I'm a mom" thing hasnt really set in. I'm so afraid my supply is going to go away. It gets so tirining pumping at work, in the car, in the little room at the hospital. I just need some encouragement, someone to tell me I'm doing okay.

you're doing ok....great even...Erin. You can't do much so you are doing what you can for your baby!!! Just keep up at it.....otherwise your supply will drop and you won't be able to do what you want to do, which is nurse him, not pump all the time. KEEP UP the good work!!!

Erin, you're doing great! I also had to start my first nursing experience with a milking machine aka pump instead of my baby. It's hard emotionally and physically. Think of how much wonderful breastmilk you are providing for your little guy, once he can have it. I know there's not much else you can do for him right now, and that must be frustrating, but try to focus on the pumping as something HUGE you are doing for him!

Thinking of and praying for you daily, Erin. This is a tough start to being a mom, especially a first time one, but God will bring you through this. Cling to Him.

Erin, you are doing a great job! Issac is a blessed little boy to have such a great mommy who loves him so much.

I have very little experiencing with pumping, though I did pump a little here and there. I know it must be a lot different than it is to nurse a baby, but at the same time I remember in the beginning having some of those feelings regarding nursing. The first 3 months I was exhausted from the middle of the night feedings, feeling awkward because I could not nurse without a boppy pillow, and dreading going anywhere because of the chance he would want to eat. Oh not to mention those nursing pads and leaking. After 3 months we hit our stride and it was a breeze after that, not that there were not times where I thought..."again, already...I just fed you".

(((Erin))) I pumped exclusively for five months with my oldest before he learned how to latch properly. I've been working full-time with my younger two babes and pumped while at work for a minimum of five months for both of them. So, I've got almost a year and a half of pumping experience under my belt. Let me tell you, PUMPING HOOVERS!!! (Pun intended). Definitely not a fun use of time and anyone who thinks so is a total sadist/masochist!

That out of the way, let me encourage you- it will get better. Before you know it you're sweet Isaac will be home (it seems like forever right now, but once he's with you full-time, it will feel like the blink of an eye). You will get to see him growing and thriving and you will know that all this hard, hard work paid off. He's already growing so well- just imagine what leaps he's going to make once he's getting your milk that the Good Lord designed specifically for his needs.

Also, remember that any extra you pump now will be going toward your soon to be growing freezer stash!

Feel free to PM me if you need advice and encouragment. I haven't pumped for a premmie, but I've done my share of sitting around hooked up to the ol' milking machine!

Speaking of freezer stash...I've filled up two shelves already! Not to mention that that I have left at the hospital. So I do feel a sense of accomplishment. I think the big thing for me is, I know what I am doing is good for him, but since he isnt here it hasnt "clicked" and doesnt feel like I'm really doing anything....but I know I am and I dont know...its just weird. Being a first time mommy I'm not really feeling like much of a mommy...

(((Erin))) I can't even imagine!! You are doing INCREDIBLY, though - and remember, breast milk is incredibly good for your little guy, and he'll get to eat it soon enough!!!

3 months, eh? I'm hoping things get easier soon!! I'm feeling quite disillusioned lately. I don't mind nursing in public, but my letdown is so forceful that sometimes Gwen pops off choking and I'll be spraying everywhere, and yeah. It's frustrating - especially lately! I'm also sooooo sick of leaking and waking up at night wet. Always wet. Ugh.

How old is your little one again? I keep forgetting how old everyone's babies are...

Each month got easier, but I just remember 3 months being when it seemed to just click for us. It still took me another 3 months to wean MYSELF from using the boppy pillow

Erin, that is completely normal for what you have been through. Add hormones on top of that...and yeah...

Hang in there. It will get better.

(((((Erin))))) You're doing a GREAT job! I'm so proud of your milk stash...that's wonderful!

I've exclusively pumped and I know how easy it is for your milk supply to go down when you don't pump often enough so I encourage you to try your hardest to keep up the pumping. You won't be sorry! If your supply isn't quite up to par when he is ready to nurse, be sure to ask about a supplimental nursing system or other options. To make the time pass easier while pumping, I usually read a book or my Bible.

You're giving Isaac a wonderful start in life by giving him your milk! You're an awesome mom! I know it's a difficult time right now but God will reward your sacrifice and hard work. You won't regret the time you spent pumping for him.

Erin, hang in there! Personally, I find breastfeeding much easier than pumping now that he's got the hang of it. I don't mind bfing at all, but I HATE pumping, so maybe you'll be like me and find it easier when the time comes. Just give your nursing relationship some time then. It took us about 6 weeks before it was easy. Now, it's great - even in the middle of the night we side lie and half the time we both drift off to sleep.

If my supply falls off, I can get it back cant I? Just pump more? I seem to be getting less today and yesterday and now I am worried. I know I am probably not eating right..or drinking enough...I REALLY need to work on that, but with the circumstances its quiet tough!

You should feel very proud of yourself. I NEVER was able to nurse without a pillow; I used a pillow up until the very end. And I can count on one hand the number of times I nursed in public.

absolutely you can get it back....but honestly Erin, your second statement makes me pull out my "mommy tone" with you. You are right, you need to eat right and drink enough...and don't blame the circumstances.....just deal with it and do it!!!! That alone could KILL your supply!!!!! You don't have a baby latched onto you yet, so the best you can do is pump....and your body needs you to eat right and drink enough if it is going to do what you want it to do. You are doing extremely well for the circumstances, but you CAN NOT let those circumstances rule your bfing relationship. Your #1 priority every day should be to kiss and love your husband and your son....and your #2 priority should be keeping your own body going with the proper nutricien and proper amounts of water/drinks. (ok, those two priorities are aside from God of course).

Regarding the eating/drinking, I'll stick my neck out and say that, of the two, drinking is more important. So, if eating and drinking right is too much to manage, then keeping your fluids right up there should IMO be your priority.

Well even though I could it was never as comfortable as when I had a pillow. At home I always used a pillow, but when I was at church or somewhere that it wasn't possible I was able to do it without having one.

Erin - Please start eating better and drinking more. Hugs!

Erin, I agree with those urging you to drink and eat more, especially drinking. I understand though that your body and emotions have recently gone through a shock of delivering way early than you thought would happen. For some people, having a hard time eating and drinking is a natural response to that. It is for me too, and there were days after Brian's accident that I had to force myself to eat and drink solely for the baby. It was almost a mind over matter thing. It was similar for me after Noah's birth...I had mostly a liquid diet for a couple months afterward. Definitely worry more about drinking than eating at this point, listen to your body, and know that you aren't the only person to have dealt with that kind of reaction.

Erin- Also remember how well you did after you got to hold him! Keep eating and DRINKING for sure, but as you hold him more, I think your supply will come up too and as he is able to actually try nursing in a few more weeks, that will help as well. Remember that he was made for you and you were made for him, so whatever is best for both of you will work out in the end. For now, you are doing a great job, just keep at it!

Thanks ladies. Last night was a rough night. But after adding up my numbers I didnt do as bad as I thought yesterday. Today is better, I'm trying harder...I already drank a bottle of water and am now making my oatmeal. Today is a new day and I'll work harder at it.
