This is going to sound incredibly silly, but I always loved back to school shopping. I struggled with making friends, especially in American schools, but I was a strong student. But new supplies and clothes were always fun. I find myself looking forward to it someday with my kids.

My 3 year old niece is starting 3-K in August, and I'm pretty astonished at the list her Christian school sent out as required supplies. In addition to tuition they have to buy a bunch of stuff for her, plus contribute money to classroom art supplies.

It does amaze me at how much the schools don't provide. Any school, public or private.

I remember my parents would take us shopping for school clothes. We'd get 5 shirts/blouses, 2 pairs of pants, 1 or 2 dresses/skirts for us girls, tennis shoes, socks and undergarments. Now it seems like parents buy those every season for their children.

For school supplies, I think it was up until 7th grade we only needed crayons, pencils, binder and paper. Then once we got to 7th grade we didn't need the crayons, but we needed folders and spiral notebooks. I think if we took art classes we needed more items, but I'm not sure. I took choir, drama and guitar and the school provided a guitar for class.

Oh, and for Christmas and birthdays we got clothes too- so that helped with the clothing budget. My younger brother is the only one who didn't get clothes for his birthday, but that was because he was hard to fit and his birthday is right before school starts. My sister's is right before Christmas and myself and my older brother's are right after Christmas, so that took care of our winter wardrobes.

One brothr and I had August birthdays so we would get clothes we might need to start school for our birhtdays and then we all got more clothes we might need for Christmas. We also only got clothes when we needed them...not a new wardrobe just because school was starting.

Actually, we didn't go shopping for school clothes, my mom would find sales thoughout the summer and get us what we needed when they were on sale. Whatever she bought for school went into a box until school started. That way we didn't wear it over the summer. My grandmother usually bought us coats for Christmas presents.

I don't remember us getting a whole new wardrobe, per se, but we did get several new outfits. It was enough for us to wear a whole new outfit every day for the first week, and I don't consider a week's worth of clothes to be a new wardrobe. That was only later on, though, when my parents were more financially stable.

In the early days we hit the thrift stores regularly for clothes. When we were older and they had a bit more money they would tell me what the budget was, and I could use the money as wisely or as stupidly as I wanted to. They always had veto power and final approval over all choices.

Oh, well to me enough outfits for a new one every day for a week is a whole wardrobe. We went to a Christian School and I had to wear dresses/skirts and my brohters had to wear slacks and shirts with buttons. We had 5 outfits each. OK maybe 5 winter outfits and 5 warmer weather outfits.

My mom still wonders why my kids who are HSed need more than 1 church outfit. When they were kids they had one church dress they wore every week.

Me too!

My parents didn't take us to church, so that wasn't something we thought of.

I suspect that my mom got some of our school clothes at a thrift store. I know that's where she got most of our play clothes. To me, it was so embarrassing that our play clothes were purchased there. I had a friend who used to tease me about it, until I found out that her mom bought her play clothes at garage sales.

Once my parents were divorced, they gave us money to spend on school clothes. I found that thrift shops were great then.

Yup, many of our clothes came from thrift stores...especially for my brothers.

I thougth it was a big deal to have something new that didn't come from kmart which was a big insult to have Kmart clothes in the 70's

It doesn't amaze me at all. It's called budget cuts. They could get by with less IF everyone contributed what they should, but they also have to consider that NOT every child in their class WILL have parents that shop according to the list.

I know the reason they ask for so many boxes of kleenex is that not every child brings in even one box.

Good art supplies aren't cheap either.

Just curious - what's on the 3 year old's list?

Blessings,

Garsy

When I was a kid the kids provided the consumables that they would use.

The school provided the following. Many of these are not items that have to be bought every year or the schools can by them cheaper than parents can:
Consumables the teacher used
Non consumables (like scissors and rulers)
supplies for special classes: like construction paper or art supplies

The only exceptions to the special classes things were things that were personal: gym suits and the flutophone (recorder) for 3rd grade music. However, those things were often available used or could be passed down to siblings.

I think in elementary school we provided maybe 1 box of tissues a year.

In high school you might have to buy things like a calcuator or compass because these are things you would need to take hom to do your homework but then you got to keep them

Yes! I remember that soooooo well! There is a K-Mart that is pretty much the half-way point between my house and the high school. *K-Mart Blue Light Special*
Now that I'm back in the house that I grew up in and my dd is attending my old high school, we shop K-Mart. DD and her friends love it and they love thrift shops too!

By the time I had kids I think some of the stigma with Kmart or Walmart had gone away. When someone compliments something my kids have and I ssay it's from Walmart they make comments like they shop there too.

as far as clothing goes, I don't remember EVER buying new clothing for school as a child. I do remember going to garage sales and thrift stores a couple towns over and buying clothes for school. My mom, having grown up with thrift store and hand-me arounds, was very conscientious about the possible teasing we would have to endure if we wore something one of our classmates sold at a garage sale or gave to the thrift store locally. But my parents were also unable to financially afford to cloth all 6 of us kids with brand new clothing from the local J.C. Penny or whatever. We did always get new shoes tho and underwear.

I still shop thrift stores for my boys' jeans and some of my eldest dd's pants as well. As far as school clothes go, we buy as the kids need them. They MAY get one or two new outfits to start the school year with - but never more than that. We do buy new shoes, socks and undies before school starts - simply because that's when they seem to always need to refresh their stashes.

Blessings,

Garsy

Yes they do! That is one thing that my parents never got us for Christmas or birthdays. I was thankful for that!

yeah...budget cuts stink!

i don't think it's always (though it can be sometimes) that parents don't contribute, i think there are a lot in public schools that can't contribute. to many a simple box of kleenex might not seem like a lot, but it can be...especially with more than 1 child- LOL we don't even buy kleenex for home. i get frustrated that for 3 children, it is not odd to spend over $100 on school supplies (and that just includes notebooks, paper, crayons, etc). back in the day, i was only required to have a notebook, some paper, and a pencil...wow, times have changed.

btw...just curious, do most schools/teachers require very specific items? my 7th grade daughter last year was required to have 4 3-inch binders, sharpie markers, specific folders, etc. although i know it must make it easier for teachers to have everything uniform, i think it's a bit much....finally, after dd couldn't carry home all of those binders, we begged teachers to let her cut them down to 1-inch, which they, thankfully, did. ;o)

Now that I'm in CA, I'm not sure. However, that was the norm when we lived in IN.

We are in Indiana! Diva

Anyway - If you want to see my younger three children's lists I've copied them from the thread in public and private school thread:

2nd grader:

Crayola Crayons - 1 24 count box (I'll buy her at least 3 boxes- just to have some new ones at home)
Crayola Markers - Classic colors broad tip 10 count box
Red editing pen - 1
Crayola Colored pencils - classic colors - 1 12 count box
#2 pencils - 36 (YIKES!)
Yellow Highlighter - 1 (we already have these)
Pearl Erasers - 2
Elmer's glue sticks - 2 large sticks and 2 small sticks
Fiskers scissors - 1 pair child size (we already have these)
Dry Erase markers - 2 of any color
Plain colored plastic pocket folders NO PRONG INSERTS - 1 each in green, red, yellow, blue, purple and orange (these are going to be tough to find exactly so I'm going to talk to the teachers about this).
Kleenex - 1 box (wow surprising typically it's more)
Plastic pencil box (we have these but I' think I'm going to see about getting her a slightly bigger one.)

Then they also ask that the girls bring in Quart sized ziplocks - 1 box, and of course a book bag and gym shoes.

4th grade:

Crayola crayons - 1 24 count box (I'll buy him two because I KNOW how hard he is on things - but I'll keep it at home til he needs it)
Crayola markers classic - 1 8 count box fine line
Crayola colored pencils - 1 12 count box
#2 pencils - 24
Red pen - 2 (I might have some of these)
Highlighters - (we have these already)
Dry erase markers - 4 colors pack
Sharpies - 1 black
Pearl erasers (the large pink ones) - 2
Elmer's glue - 1 4 oz bottle (we have the one he's been using since 2nd grade)
Elmer's glue stick - 1 large stick or at least 2 smaller sticks
Fisker's scissors - 1 pair (we have these already)
Wooden ruler (standard/metric) - 1 (we have this already)
Pocket folders WITH the prongs - 8

Kleenex - 1 large box
3x5 index cards - 4 packages (and they use them! I'll likely buy him at least 5 packages)
Spiral notebooks - 3 70 count
Loose leaf notebook paper - 2 packages (I'll get at least 4 as they ran short last year and if he gets the new teacher, he won't have any leftovers to start with)
Post-it notes - 2 pads (I'll buy him 3)
Basic Calculator - 1 (we already have this)
And of course the Pencil box - I think I'm going to get him a larger one as well.

Then the book bag and gym shoes.

5th grade:
Crayola markers classic fine line - 1 8 count box
Crayola colored pencils classic - 1 12 count box
#2 pencils - 36
Pens - 1 red and 1 blue (we probably have these)
Highlighers 2 (we have these)

Dry erase markers fine tip - 4
Sharpie markers black fine tip - 2 (we may have 1 or 2 of these around- but will need to buy more)
Pearl erasers - 1
Elmer's glue sticks - 2 small
Scissors - 1 pair (we have these)
Pocket folders WITH prongs - 5 in SOLID colors only

Kleenex - 1 large box (again I'm surprised)
Spiral notebooks 70 count - 1
Index cards ruled 3x5 - 1 package (but I'll buy Aryn at least 3 because she loves to use them)
Loose leaf paper wide ruled 100 count - 3 packages (I'll buy her 4 because I seem to recall her running out last year and she tends to go through paper like crazy)
1inch 3 ring binders with Clear-view fronts - 2
3 ring divider tabs 8 count - 1 set
Flash drive (optional but highly recommended) - 1
Plastic pencil box (she's getting a large one.)

Then the typical book bag and gym shoes - they also want the 5th grade girls to bring in 1 box of gallon sized ziplocks.

The things in red we've already bought or have on hand already.

We have crazy long lists!

Blessings,

Garsy

My dd is starting preschool, and I hadn't really thought about shopping. She has enough clothes.

I buy bargains or particularly appealing stuff when I see them. Other than that, I make an effort to shop when outfits get small and the pickings get slim in the drawer, and when the seasons are changing. (We're in Canada, so buying seasonally is necessary - we can't wear the same clothes year round.)

It seems like if you buy everything at the same time, they would grow out of it all at the same time. For me it makes sense to buy here-and-there through the year. Easier on the budget too, and a nice cheerful thing to buy something nice once in a while.

I wonder if they will ask for supplies...

Did you mean the rulers? I like the metal ones with the cork backs. We have to get a lot of them, though, because we're always losing them.

I love Walmart. I just wished there were a Super Walmart closer to where we live.

Yes, I remember the dreaded K-Mart clothes. I lived in fear that someone would ask where I got something that I got there.

Our lists ask for specific items.

Here is my 8th graders list:

8th Grade Supply List 2008-2009

2 - Single Subject Notebooks (Communications and Science)
1 - package Note cards - 4 x 6 (Communications)
4 - packages loose leaf notebook paper (100 count packages) (Literature, Social Studies, Science, Math)
2 - three-ring 1” binders (Science and Math)
2 - pocket folders Lliterature and Science)
5-tabbed dividers - 1 set (Math)
Pencils (all classes)
1 - box/8 colored pencils - (Science)
Tissues - 3 boxesAll students should bring pencils and blue or black pens.

Homework will be accepted only in pencil or blue or black pens.

My fifth graders list was a little longer.

We buy things as we need them, or as we find something for a good price. My oldest two girls just bought some new clothes on clearance. They've already started wearing them though, so they didn't want to save them to be new for school starting. We go to garage sales and thrift stores, and many of their clothes come from there. That's never been a problem for them, they like to go. From middle school until they have their own money I give them money twice a year to buy clothes. That way they can learn how to make it go the furthest. I'm not sure what I'll do with my son; he's not really into shopping.
