I have a serious entry. Not saying that it is but it could be. Or at least not laughable at the suggestion.

"Stargazer" by Rainbow. This is the feature song from the "Rising" album (as in Rainbow Rising). Very epic and switches gears from fatigue to disillusion to ecstasy as a follower of a wizard (who is going to fly) tells us about his experiences as they perform hard (slave?) labor in the desert. They build the tower for the wizard but when the wizard goes to fly he goes splat. Our chronicler and his fellow followers wonder why they sacrificed so much for this vision that resulted in utter failure. But then our narrator sees it, a rainbow rising. He's been set free because of this. He has his will back and he's coming home. And with Ronnie James Dio on vocals you really feel it all. This song also features an orchestra toward the end as well as the always excellent guitar work of Ritchie Blackmore.

At least thats how I see it.

To me this story sounds very familiar ... but it might be just me.

A Google search will bring up the lyrics. TOS and laziness on my part preclude me including the lyrics here.

Mm Bop by Hanson. I can't believe you guys missed that one!

Seriously though, Sweet Child of Mine is a great song (and I don't even really like GnR!), as is Whole Lotta Love and Good Times Bad Times by Led Zep. I love all their earlier stuff.

Good call. I've always felt that that Blackmore's Rainbow output has been a bit undertated by most. They were a solid, top notch rock band in my book, with something to offer on each album - though they probably were at their best on the first three. Anyone know if "Finyl Vinyl" has been remastered? That was an excellent anthology.

It's on their first "Greatest Hits" album. (Double LP/One CD)

The best Zeppelin cover, ever. Not only does Ann slay this song, but the short drum solo at the end is very, very tasty.

First, thanks for the response.

It appears from the info on All Music Guide that it was remastered and rereleased along with the rest of Rainbow's catalog in 1999. However, it is only available as a Japanese import on Amazon and according to Amazon its not the remastered version. A friend of mine had it but I'm almost sure he no longer does. I had it on tape eons ago.

I have to disagree on the excellent anthology part. It was a collection of live performances spanning Rainbow's career (and the first appearance of "Jealous Lover" on a full length best I can tell). It was dominated by material when Joe Lynn Turner was the lead singer. Only two Dio era tracks and only two Graham Bonnett tracks.

Some of its good points were that it filled a hole in Rainbow's catalog at the time (a live album with Joe Lynn Turner era material) and the songs from the Turner era have more energy live than their radio friendly studio counterparts.

The reason I say it isn't a good anthology is that good anthologies cover the artist's entire career and does so with the signature performances (as opposed to live takes, none of which weere heard before the release except maybe in bootlegs). Rainbow does have two anthologies remastered and readily available that do a good job of this. "The Very Best of Rainbow" is a one disc set (that comes with a foldout that chronicles all 17 Rainbow alumni and all the different Rainbow lineups, where they came from and where they went). "Catch the Rainbow" is a two disc one, more expensive but has more tunes.

Thats not to say Finyl Vinyl is not good for what it is. Since I used to own it on tape I thought I should explain what it is. And I thought you might have misremembered the name since you said the first three albums were your favorites and they had very little representation here. But if you love it great, I hope you find it but right now it'll cost you around 30 bucks. Also, "Live in Germany '76" looks like an excellent Dio era live release and is available.

Sorry for the thread jack, I'm done.

That Smell is my favorite Skynyrd song; it has some awesome guitar solos.
Rainbow is great too.

I've been thinking for a while of the best songs. It's so hard to come up with just one. It all depends on my mood what the best is.
Here are a few:

  • Layla--Derek and the Dominos
  • Statesboro Blues--Allman Brothers
  • Something--Beatles
  • Runaround Sue--Dion and the Belmonts
  • Suite Judy Blue Eyes--CSNY
  • Crazy Train--Ozzy
  • Photograph--Def Leppard

Now for a guilty pleasure...
Hot For Teacher--Van Halen (one of the coolest guitar solos ever!)

In high school we used to argue between Stairway, Iron Man by Black Sabbath, Smoke On the Water by Deep Purple and Working Man by Rush. I was the oddball that had to say Working Man but that is a total jam.

The live La Via Estrangiata (sp?) from Exit Stage Left is in my top 10. Another contender was "Singring and the Glass Guitar" by Utopia. It's subtitled "An Electrified Fairy Tale" and tells the story of 4 adventurers who go off to rescue their muse.

She played a few songs off that album at the show. She even sings, "Rock n Roll" better than Robert Plant. Sorry Zeppelin fans but it's true!!!

Seriously I wasn't able to find a live version of Heart doing "Rock and Roll".

It's on their first "Greatest Hits" album. (Double LP/One CD)

Way cool markb77!!!

I looked on Napster (like I should have done before) and found it is also on "The Essential Heart" and their second "Greatest Hits album released in 1998 as well. The 1998 version is lacking and the one on the other two is the same recording which is better. Especially when she's singing "Looooonely!" at about 3:50 into the song.

Rufus - you're right. I should have said it was an excellent live album instead of an anthology. I only have it on tape (which is why I'm looking for a remastered CD copy), and haven't listened to it in quite a while. That tape was the only Rainbow I owned for a long time - have since found several albums on vinyl and have a few CDs, but not that one. "Final" will always be one of my favorite albums to listen to while mowing the lawn, though!

I hope you find the "Finyl Vinyl" Mark, I'm not sure why thats the only one among the Rainbow remasters that is hard to find. Good call on the Heart, thats the best compilation on Heart available. The "Essential" series in general tends to be real good and can usually be found for single CD prices with just a bit of shopping around.

For my part I prefer the original albums. I've got "Little Queen" as a remastered CD and the original CD for "Dreamboat Annie". I would love to find a remaster on annie but aside from the super rare gold CD I can't find one that says its a remastered CD although Annie has had multiple (very inexpensive) rereleases.

I've bought a number of the "Essential" series and have been happy with all of them. And I'm not sure what the deal is with Annie that it's never been remastered properly. Maybe a "Deluxe" edition will show up eventually.
