So, some of here have been sewing lately and I'm interested to know what you've been making? Or what you have plans for! I love getting inspiration from other people...

I just cut a tablecloth from a sheet and hemmed it...that was my first project believe it or not.

I plan to make curtains for my kiddo's room because he's waking up at daylight. I need to find darkening material for the inside layer though. So it might be a while yet, I don't hit the fabric stores very often.

That's about as complicated as I can get yet!

........ I sew simple stuff...

My last 'big' project was turning two pairs of high water jeans into skirts...

I cut off the legs and found some cool $1/yd material at Wal-Mart to sew onto them for the skirt...

I've gotten nothing but compliments from them....

I'm secretly wondering if they are weird....

I love wearing them, though.....

My next project... making two pairs of stretch pants into capri's....

I hate high water pants!!! :D

When I get a kitchen table... I'm determined to show my girls how to sew....

I just finished baby's dust ruffle and bumper pads (well the machine sewing part, I have some hand sewing work to do on them still). I have a maternity shirt cut out and am going to start on that. I have also been finishing up the quilting on my baby quilt.

Yolanda, I made blackout curtains in the past and just sewed black fabric between the decorative side and the lining. It's not as fancy but it does work.

I need to make some more blackout curtains for our room and Gabby's room. She has a window and a sliding glass door.

Rachel, I'm sure your skirts are cute!! Some of my fondest memories growing up are of my mom teaching me to sew.

I just finished a pair of linen blend pants for Gabby. She needs a 2T to fit her buns but then I have to cuff them up 3 times so I just made some simple "10 minute trousers" from a friends tutorial. I have a couple baby carriers that I am waiting on fabric for, and then some stuff slated to be sewn today.

My sewing is mostly limited to buttons and even that might be a stretch depending on the fabric But I've been working on a Christmas stocking that I hope to finish by December... I've been working on it since last November This is what it looked like about a week ago. I'm on step 62 of 110

I need some inspiration to get back to sewing. I need to make so many things and I have been thinking about making a new quilt. Christmas is not that far away if I plan on giving it as a gift.

I'm not even sure how to sew the curtain together with the lining...

My mom says she has a book for me that I can look at, I'm just waiting for her to find it.

Pretty much like a gigantic blanket or pillowcase. "Right" sides together, if you want them to be blackout it would be- right side decorative, lining, then the blackout panel. You would then turn it right sides out and I would probably top stitch to make it all lay nicely. I would make them about 6" longer then I needed and just fold that 6" over at the top to make the rod pocket. Very, very simple but definitely cute and functional.

I love to sew, I just don't have a lot of places to set my machine, so it ends up on the dining room table and shimmies/shakes if I go too fast.

But...I love it anyways. I make clothes - not as much anymore, since good material is no longer as affordable as it once was and patterns are just ridiculous in price. But I still do some things like capris - since they are super easy and I can get them to fit me properly.

I hope to sew some curtains complete with foo-foo stuff on them this weekend.

And anyone living near a Wal-Mart - they are apparently doing away with their fabric department and have lots of their fabric on sale for $1 a yard. Just a heads up for anyone interested.

I did take sewing classes in junior high and high school... my mom and my aunt were big sewers...

.... but when it comes right down to it... I can't sew like they can.

So in my world... I use my imagination and toss the 'rules' to the wind...

I just keep reminding myself that my mom isn't looking over my shoulder! ;o)

Never thought of making a Bible cover!

Ive had the idea for along time now, and I have had the fabric for along time and other day I was in craft store I have never been in and I picked up a zipper and for my bible cover and few pieces of fabric and decided I would get started on projects I have held off on.... now the purse I have everything but I decided for this purse I wanted a certain look and I need a purse frame for it... but yet I cant find one around I have seen a few online I like but still kinda deciding about everything.

My grandma taught me very young to sew. When I was a kid I tried to make alot things like outfits and outfits for christmas shows I would put on for my parents me and my sisters.
They were hilarious because I didnt understand measurements and everything... just knew how to sew lol also made a purse by hand when I was young it took a very long time but I wanted it to be perfect.

Yay! A sewing thread (no pun intended). I just got my machine back from the repair shop and it purrs like a kitten now, so I'm raring to go. I make purses, but don't have any that I'm working on right now. Last night I made a top for a small sensory quilt for either one of my kiddos or to donate. I also made a ball that I just need to stuff and finish. I think I'm going to stuff it with dried beans and make it into a hacky sack. I'm also working on a star quilt that my aunt has us all doing as a summer project.
There are lots of free clothes patterns here. I haven't tried any of them yet, but I have a few in mind.
I've picked up a good amount of fabric at garage sales, and just by asking around for whatever people have hanging around.

Ok ladies, what kind of (hand) stitch can you use to close a seam from the outside where the stitching won't show? Picture making a beanbag, turning it right side out, stuffing it, then needing to close the opening you used to stuff. What kind of stitch?

oh yay..a sewing thread!!!!!

I have a whole list of things to do!!!! Hubby broke my machine back when we were in Germany and we have had trouble finding someone here where we now live that can fix it. So my mom just visited this past week and left her machine with me and took mine back to her mechanic to fix it for me. I am sooo excited!!!!! I have a whole list of projects to do.....including.....

baby blanket for Jack's new bedroom theme (he and Jake are not sharing a room, and Jack will get a toddler bed for his second birthday next month, so I am going to make him a camo blanket for his bed so it will match Jake's bedding).

Curtains for the boys room (camo inspired of some sort)

curtains for the girls room (right now they have sheets stapled up over the windows...I was given some really nice white material though that will look wonderful. I will post later about specifics on this one as it will be one of my first projects to undertake).

shower curtains for one of our bathrooms. The shower door came off, so we are just putting up a curtain, but it's about twice as wide as it needs to be...so I split it in half and am going to sew up the sides and hang the other side over the closet area in the bathroom (where hubby keeps his tools).

before Christmas I need to make more stockings. My mom made a few years ago when we had two kids, and now I need to make three more that match those for the three we have added to our family since then.

for Christmas gifts this year, one of the things I am going to do is make Bible covers for the kids...so that's another one to add to the list.

a baby busy book for the babies to do during church. I am cheap and don't want to shell out the $50 it would cost to buy the one I like (Bible story related pages)...so I am going to make it myself (and probably not spend half of that on materials!!!)

baby carrier...one Ryanne showed me a pic of that I fell in love with, so I am going to make it!!!!!

curtains for the living room (again, right now we have sheets hanging waiting on me to actually get to sew what I want in there)

I have a few dresses for the girls that I started of got the material for but never got to finish...so I want to make those.

hmmm...I think that is all in my list...except the things I have to repair (sheet that one of the corners came apart on, blanket that needs some tlc, pants I cut off for the kids because of holes in the knees that need to be sewn up on the bottom, etc)

I'm glad you have a working machine now Sarah, even if it isn't yours. I couldn't believe the difference when I got my machine back from the repair shop- it was like it was brand new again!
You have lots of neat-sounding projects on your list. I love the busy book idea. I found a pattern for one here that looked really cute.
I'm trying to figure out a way to use up a bunch of pairs of jeans that have holes in the knees. I made one pair into a skirt, and another one is slated to be a broomstick skirt. I think capris are out because I like them to be ankle length, and I don't really wear shorts, so I'm sort of at a loss. I've thought about just cutting them into squares and making a rag quilt, but I'm open to other ideas.

So what kind of sewing machine does everyone use? Mine is a Singer 401A. Now that its back in working order I love it. Its probably about 50 years old and likely weighs at least 40 lbs. It will sew through pretty much anything. The man we bought our house from left it here for me.

I have a version of THIS machine. I'm pretty sure that I have the original model that was released in the 70's, it's my MIL's and is good as an all purpose machine. I am actually going to look at 2 sewing machines that someone is selling for $25 tomorrow, both are older but I don't mind that since they are made to last.

I"m convinced older machines are the way to go. They really are built to last, especially if they're well taken care of.

Me too. My mom bought a new one about 10 years ago and has since thrown it out and reverted back to her "tried and true" machine that is older then me, lol.
