Pa. Episcopal diocese OKs split over Bible

MONROEVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Clergy and lay members of the theologically conservative Pittsburgh diocese voted overwhelmingly Saturday to break from the liberal Episcopal Church, with which it differs on issues ranging from homosexuality to biblical teachings on salvation.
Assistant Bishop Henry Scriven said the vote means the Pittsburgh diocese is now more firmly aligned with the majority of the 77 million-member worldwide Anglican Communion, which is more conservative than the communion's 2.2 million-member U.S. church.
"I am delighted," Scriven said, "that what we have done today is bringing the Diocese of Pittsburgh back into the mainstream of worldwide Anglicanism."

I have heard some things in news stories about Anglicans reverting to the Roman Catholic Church due to infection with liberalism in some places. I haven't heard much about Anglicans going to the Orthodox Church, but the two have been considered rather close. In fact, before the liberalism came into the Anglican Church, there were some hopes of a common communion. For example, at the end of the Anglican-Orthodox conference in Bucharest in 1935, the delegates went so far as to make the statement "A solid basis has been prepared whereby full dogmatic agreement may be affirmed between Orthodox and Anglican communions."
I was an Episcopalian a few years ago. I am happy to report that, since yesterday, my wife, my kids, and I are Orthodox catechumens. While I haven't heard the press talking about such things, my priest tells me that the Orthodox Church does seem to get more interest every time the Episcopal Church does something unseemly.

19th-century deeds surface in church dispute

The Episcopal Diocese of Virginia and a group of 11 conservative breakaway congregations wrangled yesterday over ownership of the historic Falls Church, a 276-year-old congregation that until two years ago was one of the crown jewels of the denomination.
During the trial at the Fairfax County Courthouse, witnesses said the Northern Virginia church near the intersection of Lee Highway and Leesburg Pike has been overseen by its own trustees since 1746, when John Trammell, a local landowner, deeded 2 acres to build a church.
A group of Colonists, including George Washington's father, had been meeting since about 1732 at the spot that today has several brick buildings - one dating from 1769 - and a historic graveyard.

Today, I ran across an interesting column by George Will, closing with:
The Episcopal Church once was America's upper crust at prayer. Today it is "progressive" politics cloaked — very thinly — in piety. Episcopalians' discontents tell a cautionary tale for political as well as religious associations. As the church's doctrines have become more elastic, the church has contracted. It celebrates an "inclusiveness" that includes fewer and fewer members.
I thought some of you on this thread would find it interesting to read:

My church which I have referenced here frquently has grown from 20-some member seven years ago to more than 300 today, We have planted another church in Chapel Hill (which is already looking to plant a church in Durham) and we in the begining stages of another church plant somewhere in the Raleigh area.
We have about 100 children in our church and it seems our nursery is ever explanding. Our childrens minister in insistent that SS and childrens church be more than babysiting but a time of grounding children in the faith.
We continue to draw "cradle to grave" Espiscopalians who have had enough of a dead church but want to stay in the Historic Anglican faith.

I have followed this thread with interest, you can't judge the whole of the Anglican church by a few Bishops or even the diocese that are following the liberal teachings of the national church both American and Canadian. There are still many places that hold fast to the authority of Scripture - our diocese is in the process of electing a new Bishop and one of our requirements is that he be a godly man who is well versed in Scripture and respects the authority of Scripture. Many churches have broken away from the National church for the very reason of their misguided attempts to discount Scripture. The real battle isn't against homosexuals, that the grounds they've chosen to use, the real fight is the disobedience to what is written in the Bible, eg. being; the virgin birth, the deity of Christ, the many ways to heaven.
I have attended many churches and in fact minister in a different denomination but for pure Biblical teaching and spiritual services I find the Anglican church's worship to be both spiritual and uplifting. Our Book of Common Prayer services are filled with Scripture, just read them, you'll find more Scripture than is given in most other denominational services. I have no quarrel with anyone who prefers a less structured service. As for the question of homosexuals inheriting the kingdom of God, I'll leave that one up to God. The parable of the workers who got paid the same for working an hour as all day speaks to this question. God can save whomever he will and I don't presume to judge another. For the record I don't believe the homosexual life style is a Godly life style and I pray that those living this life style come into the light of Christ and find joy in serving God.

The battle against acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle is an outgrowth of a distain of Scripture. It is a small battle in a larger war.
