thorkraki -> Vacation trip with sons (6/17/2008 7:21:09 PM)

My wife has to travel for business for two weeks in August, and I thought that this would be a good idea to take my three sons on a "men only" vacation. My wife thought it was a great idea too! And the boys are eager to do this also.

So if you were going to do this, what sort of vacation would you plan? I would like to hear some ideas from other men who either have done this sort of trip, or who have any thoughts about it.

Hey Thor - Camping is always fun!

thorkraki -> RE: Vacation trip with sons (6/18/2008 9:41:33 AM)

Camping is a good idea, and my sons like to do it. We could camp here in Europe, but maybe it would be good to do it in the USA, so they can see some more of it? They have only been to New York, Washington DC, and Los Angeles.

Were are some good places to camp in the USA? I know it's very big, I have traveled a little myself in the West and Southwest. Is it possible to camp at the Grand Canyon, does anyone know?

Thanks!

Thor

I'd google grand canyon camping. That will give you the info. The Poconos, PA is a possibility, too. Mountains, lakes, etc.

Poconos Pa is in Pennsylvania? That is very near where we will be moving to afterwards, in New York, so that sounds like a great idea! Thanks very much!

Having grown up as a Boy Scout and love the outdoors, I'd go for camping too. I'd teach them some camp fire cooking, fishing, how to cut wood without cutting off your foot, first aid/survival, and take all of my guns for some fun target shooting.

Thanks! They do most of that already. We hunt in Italy; the Italians are big hunters, but it's mostly birds. There used to be big game, even wild boar, but most of it was wiped out in Italy by the Romans because they sent them all to the Colosseum and other amphitheaters for the venatio, the wild beast hunts on stage!

Oh man, we have plenty of wild boar here in the southeast US. I won't go in the woods without at least my Sig .40 cal. You can be happily walking through the woods, and end up in a pine tree reeeeeal fast. [:D]

White water rafting was something I did with my dad before he passed on.

thorkraki -> RE: Vacation trip with sons (6/19/2008 5:33:13 PM)

I have looked into camping in the Poconos Mountains in Pennsylvania, USA, and I believe there is rafting there, although I don't know if it is whitewater. My sons and I went whitewater rafting last year in New Zealand and they loved it! So we will see what rafting there is in Pennsylvania. Even without the white water, it is fun to be on the water.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! My wife thinks that it is a good idea for me to take our sons on a vacation too. She has work obligations so it is not like we are leaving her out!

All of my family is going to church with me this Sunday. We usually only go on the big holidays, but they know that this is important to me so they are going! I praise Jesus Christ for this!

If you live here in the northwest, take a few horses and some bedrolls and go hunting elk for a week or two.

thorkraki -> RE: Vacation trip with sons (6/20/2008 4:17:53 PM)

Elk hunting must be fun! I hunted reindeer in Finland once; maybe it is similar! Anyway, I let my boys do the shooting generally these days because my distance eyesight is now poor.

I am also going to find out about concerts in USA, because we like to attend concerts as a family.

Blazingson -> RE: Vacation trip with sons (6/21/2008 12:20:43 PM)

Might be similar, though I imagine that elk are are bigger and meaner. I've read that reindeer are domestic animals up there and in Lapland.

thorkraki -> RE: Vacation trip with sons (6/21/2008 1:26:52 PM)

These ones were not domesticated; we were about three hundred kilometers from any settlement. There are lots of herds of domestic reindeer for sure, though.

I wonder about hunting moose, whether it's legal anywhere? It has been a long time since I did big game hunting!

When I worked overseas as a teacher one day I had no one to look after my son who was on school vacation and so I let him come into the childrens English language class I was teaching. This was the first time he saw what I did for a living and I could not help but watch his take on things as they happened. Now many years latter as he refers to my having been a teacher I get the feeling he really got a better idea of who his old man is by seeing me at work.

Last month we went to the capital and had a look around government buildings and I noticed something aout him that I have never noticed before and that is he is frighteningly like his old man. I am still not sure if this is a good thing but I am grateful he is mine. So it doesn't matter were you go or do as long as you get to see the real other for the first time.

My sons and I have just returned from an excellent camping trip in the Poconos Mountains of Pennsylvania. Now we are preparing to move to our new home in the middle of New York!

lots of great camping in the middle of New York :)

Believe it or not the pheasant hunting down around Greenville Ohio is not too bad, and theres a lot of old indian forts around there that can be rather interesting.
