The other day at Bible study, the pastor was praying and referred to Jesus as "dude." Do you find this offensive or not?

I can think of a lot of things that I can call Christ, but they are always with respect to Who He is. The Bible study consists of about a half dozen people. At the age of 43, I'm the youngest one there. I was very offended by this.

I guess what's irritating to me is that myself and one other lady were offended. She's in her mid-70s and happens to be the pastor's mom. He told her that she was offended because of her generation. He tried to make her feel bad for being offended. Then he asked me how I felt about it and I told him that it bothered me. The others seemed pretty neutral about it. Pastor told us that times are changing and the church needs to loosen up a bit.

Well, first, I think it was wrong of the pastor to say that you two were wrong to be bothered by it. If it's your convictions, he should respect that. However, I would say it would be equally wrong for you to say everyone should feel as you do. Obviously, they do not share your convictions that "dude" is wrong. Personally, I would say that there's nothing wrong with it. Jesus was, after all, a dude. He wasn't gender-neutral, heh. And there's nothing wrong with calling Him that. But I can understand why some would feel uncomfortable using that term, so I have no problem with some people choosing to abstain from it.

It made me laugh when I read it. I probably wouldn't call Him that myself but I wouldn't get offended.

I voted wrong. I clicked "offensive" but I meant to click "not offensive." I'd be one of the dudes who has even said "dude" in his prayers. I am pretty sure Christ is not offended by me thinking of him as my buddy, close enough for me to call him "dude."

For some people "dude" is like their third most used word, so it might be natural to use in prayer -- maybe we have a good new idea for those Bud Light ads, or whatever beer company does those. haha

Jesus is supposed to be more than a heavenly being that we look upon as sacred. He is our friend, our confidant, the one closest to us. When I get all excited talking to my friends I'll say, "Dude! You won't believe..." why wouldn't I do the same when talking to him or about him? "Dude! You are so awesome! Thank you so much for being here for me this weekend! I like totally needed you and you so knew that!" That is so how I talk to him. Am I being offensive? [8D] However, you have every right to be offended and the preacher had no right to say you weren't allowed. That's wrong. huggles

The pastor said that "times are changing and the church needs to loosen up a bit". Seems to me churches have loosened up enough already with gay marriages, gay priests, civil partnerships etc... etc... It won't be long before Jesus is just an imaginary friend like some children have! We can then call Him pal, dude, mate or whatever. Does it matter? He doesn't exist anyway !!! Sorry - but I'm with DenimDiva and the old lady on this.

If the Pastors heart is in the right place (he used the word with honor), there is nothing wrong with its usage. He was wrong to use it in a Church circumstance for the exact reason that you are upset. To you it was disrespectful and what kind of teaching is that? Christ has many given names and these should be used in public. Bob

I'm sorry, but there is a large difference between allowing homosexuality, and calling Jesus dude; let alone denying the existence of Christ. It's not comparable. We're explicitly told in Scripture that we're allowed to call God the Father "daddy," and since we are co-heirs with Christ (effectively His brother - in fact, it may be stated that we are His brothers, but I can't remember where), I don't see any reason why He would be upset with us calling Him dude.

It's probably not a sin to do that, but I don't think it was wise. I'd be interested in knowing why he did that. If that's the way he really prays, and it's just part of his natural language and he is not meaning any disrespect, than it would be understandable. If he was trying to shock people, I wouldn't think it was a good enough reason to do that. As a side note, one of our former pastors would address God as "Sir". I thought that was cool.

That's something I don't understand. Why would I pray differently in a group setting than I would if I'm by myself? That's like those preachers who drop their voice and through in all the 'thees' and 'thous' and all that jazz. Why? God hears you even if you're just talking to Him. If you feel personally convicted to not call him something other than Father that's your choice, but don't make your sin someone else's sin. Do you find it offensive when people laugh during prayer? When we do Bible study at my house someone may occasionally get the giggles and we take a moment to giggle along and then thank God for humour and allowing us to have fun in His name.

I hate it! [:'(] There is a movement in Christianity today that likes to bring Jesus Christ down to a base, human level, and if you hadn't figured it out by my first sentence, yes, it offends me. Jesus is not your "Homey," "Dude," "Main Man/Squeeze" or the "Big Guy," as I've heard Him called before. He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords and He died for your sins and gave you eternal life and as such He is worthy and deserves our utmost honor and respect. If you were meeting with the CEO of your company or the President of the United States would you address either one of them as "Dude?" Not likely. How much more respect do we owe our Lord and Savior?

Yes, He is God Almighty and worthy of all worship honor and praise, from before the start of time until eternity, but He was also born a human child, lived a human life, died a human death. He came in the flesh. Now, if those phrases you quoted were used for effect, to make Jesus "more accessible," then I would have a problem with it; just as I would have a problem with people who use much loftier terms in their public prayers than they do in their private, though of course I cannot judge that. But if they used them because that is genuinely how they address people they are close with, then where is the problem? Where in Scripture does it limit how we may address God in our prayers (barring, of course, something simply and plainly disrespectful, crude, or offensive)?

I voted makes no difference to me. I wouldn't say it, but then I don't ever use the word except when referring to a dude ranch, which is very seldom. But I don't find it offensive.

If you are referring to Jesus as someone who is extremely concerned about his clothes and appearance, then yeah. If you're suggesting Jesus is from a large city, but chooses to vacation by pretending to be a cowboy, then absolutely. But as a term of affection, closeness and intimacy? How it that simply and plainly disrespectful?

There are too many to list (both in the Old and the New Testament) that command us to "fear" the Lord, which as you likely know means to reverence Him or have an awesome respect for Him. Philippians also tells us to "work out our salvation with fear and trembling." Somehow, calling the Lord "Dude" or other similar names does not seem to indicate that much reverence, fear, trembling, or respect is going on, KWIM?
