_CANCELLED_ -> Hook Me in 30 Words or Less (6/14/2008 10:39:11 PM)

This is a good exercise to try to hook a reader in the first 30 words. It's strenuous but fun--really gets the imagination flowing. I'll go first.

He was the best of swines. He was the worst of swines. The only thing everyone could agree on was he was the cleverest darn pig they'd ever seen in tight leather pants.

With the rising price of oil, your cost of living is set to triple in the next six to eight months.

LOL Let's not forget the purpose of this exercise--to captivate your audience and make them want to read more, not scare them half to death. LOL [:D] [;)]

'However, it is no secret what Obama believes, and what the church he attended for nearly 20 years teaches, is not the Christianity found within the pages of scripture."

I stopped in to the local burger joint..sitting at a table was a six pack of cops. I knew the big high school football game was tonight, but never...

Though my heart melted in her presence, my insecurities - those nasty demons - sought to destroy me once again. How could I betray the one I was sent to love?

(what the heck)

Four year old Miriam ran bare foot across the hot mettle catwalk. She had to find her father.

Lara peered anxiously out from behind the door at the people gathering in the church. "Lara, get back here!" hissed Brittney. "I have 20 minutes to finish your boquette!"

Do you know where I can find the muffin man? I swear, when I see him, I am going to stuff marshmallows in his mouth and make him give me my lucky charms.

I'm sorry this really did just pop into my head, please forgive me.

When you look in the mirror, all you see your reflection. You are not aware of the "other reflection" that reveals your heart and fears.

These are the opening lines from the next volume of my Joe Box suspense series (like the first three, it's being published by a CBA house):

Blood steams. Many people don't know that. In cold weather blood vapor can waft from a warm body like mist from a manhole cover.

TorchHeart -> RE: Hook Me in 30 Words or Less (6/19/2008 11:53:40 AM)

The razor blade fell out of Tony's wristband as he adjusted it. He stared at it, lying motionless in the sink. After 18 years, he still hadn't gotten used to them.

found this one very intriguing... you should definitely find a place to turn this into something.
creates a disturbing but believable image as you read it.
kudos

Thanks, butI AM trying to turn it into something! [:D] My agent's been bugging me as to when I'll have it done, as it's a follow-up to the first three in the series. Not a sequel per se, but more like a ... continuation.

Morning hid ominously behind a veil of disquieting darkness, revealing itself only through the balmy melodies of my 8am alarm. Yet, not a hint of eve shone in the blackened sky...

I know I went a few words over here but only after a painful edit. You know how we can often fall in love with our own words--it can be hard to let go sometimes [:D]

You are the voice which dances in the breeze; in life, breath, and love and whispers to me, "I will carry your heart. I will carry it in mine."

just to be clear because of what I'm about to say... I'm happily married. haha. but I have a question...
are you married? if not, why not? cuz you got this romance thing down!

you should write something about the great romance between Christ and his Bride. I know there is alot of stuff out there. But you may just have a fresh and effective approach to expressing it, a talent that could really reach into the heart of ppl. Are you working on any such projects at the moment?

TorchHeart -> RE: Hook Me in 30 Words or Less (6/20/2008 1:20:30 PM)

Pro-wrestling isn't real. That's what they'll all tell you. And they're right... well, half-right, anyway. Yes, the endings are scripted out. We know who will win and we know how. But the pain that comes with being bounced on your skull from a "faked" powerbomb... that's as real as you can get.

OK. Its over 30 words, but....

LOL Actually, I get up between 4 and 5 am. This is just part of one of my stories.

Thank you, I have this poster but wanted another b'c I put tack holes in mine. I wish I hadn't. So I started looking for a new one (got this one in '91) and found out from the company it's no longer in print. [:(]
