In the Christian bent I was raised, such a statement as the one above would have been counted as hubris. But I see the root. The verses that speak of the state of our carnal nature lead many to believe we remain as such after being born again. It is a false humility to think poorly of oneself, to perpetuate the relationship of I am small, he is great (and just as problematic to think well of oneself.
Humility is centered in Christ, that is where the balance between these two poles is struck and not in the mind.
Peter demonstrated this false humility when he protested the washing of his feet by Jesus. We are not to think of ourselves either as un deserving of such love or as deserving.
